Tried Arch for the first time | My experience and impressions (lemmy.ml)

I used linux intermittently in the last 15 or so years, migrating from early Ubuntu versions, to Manjaro, Pop!_OS, Debian, etc. And decided to give Arch a try just recently; with all the memes around its high entry point, I was really expecting to struggle for a long time to set it up just as I want....

I don’t know how to word this in a nice way but OP didn’t write anything that would make me assume they have bad intent.

People try things and can be frustrated when it doesn’t work for them. It can be specially frustrating in an ecochamber like this.

OP, you need to understand that you are leaving your confort zone and things might not work and that’s okay. You can have plenty of issues with Windows as well but I think we’re just trained to ignore them or assume it not the OS’s fault.

I’ve had this sleep issue once with Arch Limux and I think that’s related with a lack of swap memory. Did you configure it?

Regarding issues with programs that you use like Slack etc, If it takes too long, there might have something wrong. I never used Mint so I have no idea on what Pop Store is but I would go away to search for the packages on their official websites.

If you don’t have the patience to learn a new OS just don’t do it. You’re not obligated to do so, you’re not inferior because of it and you are free to choose what is better for you. I do feel better using Linux these days because I am honestly very tired on MS making decisions on what’s best and I enjoy fixing issues by myself.

I think you wording might offend a lot of people here because Linux and open source is almost a lifestyle for a lot of people, so if you need help staying it might be more productive to calm down and elaborate on your isssues in the future.

Edit: I just read the other person comment about swap not being the case plus your distro might already configue it on install, so it might not help at all. Sorry!

If you need information on why have Swap space you can read more about it here and here .

In the past, when installing Linux you would create a small partition in your HD for swap memory but nowadays you can just create a swap file. I think this guide might help you.

I don’t know if English is your first language but by the way you wrote your post it was a bit negative which made me understand you were frustrated, that’s why I said to calm down.

This was very informative. I am not very knowledgeable so I just assumed it might be related to swap (since I had this issue before configuring it and never again afterwards).

I assumed sleep/suspend would work kind of the same as hibernate. Thank you for your knowledge!

Don’t do it. If you’re having issues figuring out stuff by yourself don’t install Arch Linux. If you are already frustrated using an OS like Pop it will be much worse on Arch.

This is a very good example of a reply that doesn’t help at all. Sorry.

You aren’t aware of eveyones contexts so assuming everyone can simply ditch communication apps is very narrow minded. Many people have family members that aren’t well versed in tech and in many situations calling isn’t an option. My 70 years old mom for example would probably find easier to write me a letter and send it through mail than to learn how to use a new app (she can’t call since we live in different countries). Whenever they even change the app layout is a pain.

I deeply hate Whatsapp with all my might but there are sacrifices that need to be done for people you care about.

Never really had the privilege of being a frame rate snob. My teenager years was pretty much playing games that my computer didn’t have the minimum requirements to run.

Now I am a steam deck owner and I am very happy. My only complaints are when games have really bugged UIs or when controller have these nonsensical key binds you can’t change like L3 + left D pad (Path of Exile).

LibreOffice literally looks exactly like MS Office in my computer, what are you talking about? It does take a little bit of configuration, but nothing you can’t find with a quick search

Well, they have been doing it for many games including RE and people weren’t reacting the same before, were they? Is just very weird and inconsistent. The game is amazing, people not playing because of something they can just choose not to engage with because they are being misinformed by other people that didn’t even play are just missing out.

I agree with you. What I fail to understand is why people don’t react consistently to MTX in games. Did people react the same way with RE and DMC? They didn’t. People are spreading misinformation to have more people complain about the game. People were spreading that it is harder to fast travel because they want you to buy the MTX (it isn’t).

Game performance has been fine while playing on the PS5. I thought it was going to be much worse considering what people were talking about on release. But yes, the industry is awful and it seems that playing games on release isn’t a good idea these days. I regret a lot not waiting a few months before playing BG3.
