Tin,

I’m starting to think maybe Elon isn’t the ‘free speech absolutist’ he claimed to be.

realcaseyrollins, to technology
Tin,

Honest question; why would someone need a touchscreen, or a display at all beyond a battery indicator, on their earbuds case?

Gov. Abbott is now putting barriers along Texas border with New Mexico (news.yahoo.com)

Isn’t this against the US constitution? Razor wire along the state border and checkpoints on roads that cross the state border are kind of nuts. I read a comment joking that the wire and road checkpoints were to keep Texan women from escaping to New Mexico, which got a bitter laugh out of me.

Tin,

“That’s why we build the wall, we build the wall to keep us free!”

Tin,

I use fish mainly just for the quality of life increase that its predictive features and command history give. I also really like that it uses functions to play the role of aliases, and it’s super easy to write and save new functions on the fly.

That said… I haven’t put in the time to really learn its nuances and I still write shell scripts using bash. Maybe I’m doing it wrong, but it works for me.

Tin,

It started off pretty well but all day today I’ve been fighting with my health insurance (again) because they have decided they don’t want to cover an essential medication that my partner has been on for years (again). Things are moving forward, our primary doctor just gave us over a month’s worth of samples so we won’t run out while we fight, and they are compiling documentation to make a case. I’ve never had to fight to have meds covered like I have with our prescription provider this year, it’s the worst. I had to fight them earlier this year to get them to cover long-acting insulin. Insulin! Ridiculous.

Other than that, can’t complain.

Beehaw on Lemmy: The long-term conundrum of staying here

Yesterday, you probably saw this informal post by one of our head admins (Chris Remington). This post lamented some of the difficulties we’re running into with the site at this point, and what the future might hold for us. This is a more formal post about those difficulties and the way we currently see things....

Tin,

I really enjoy the community here on Beehaw, even though I mostly lurk and rarely post/comment. I do support Beehaw and will stay even if the platform changes. That said - and I speak only for my own experience here - I don’t subscribe to any categories outside of Beehaw itself, just because (a) I know how the fediverse can be, and (b) there’s a LOT out there, and I like the simplicity of a smaller community. For those reasons, adopting a whitelist would not impact my experience on Beehaw much, if at all. Wanted to say this in case it resonates with other users. Thanks for all you do.

Tin,

“Have you tried reclassifying them, and then declassifying them again?”

Tin,

“How do you sleep at night? You obviously don’t own a My Pillow.”

Wow, that was cringe.

Where To Find Actually Good Search Engines?

I’m kind of tired of Google sending me to the same 3 sites whenever I search for something. If not the same 3 sites it’s 7 others that are so generic and boring I just feel they’re useless. It’s always makeuseof, androidauthority, or whatever other sites that have useful information but I rarely feel like they are saying...

Tin,

There’s a Firefox addon called “Add custom search engine” which will allow you to add a local instance of searx.

You’ll want to give it the full search query, with %s where the search string goes. for you, it’ll be something like:

http://127.0.0.1:8080/search?q=%s

Tin,

I did Startpage, then self-hosted searx for a while, then switched back to Startpage, and recently subscribed to Kagi, which I very much enjoy. I do not mind paying a provider for search built with the user in mind rather than their advertisers.

Tin,

I find the lack of Space Quest titles in this thread unsettling. For me, it’s Space Quest IV, but they are all absolute gems.

Alarm Grows Over Wisconsin GOP's Supreme Court Impeachment Threats (www.commondreams.org)

Wisconsin Republicans are threatening to impeach recently elected liberal Justice Janet Protasiewicz if she does not recuse herself from upcoming cases related to the state’s gerrymandered legislative maps. Speaker Robin Vos suggested Protasiewicz has pre-judged the issue, which could warrant impeachment. Democrats warned that...

Tin,

No fair, she can see that we’re cheating and is willing to call us out on it!

Tin,

This is what you get after years of just switching off the power instead of shutting down safely.

Tin,

This is really weird. The AI stuff is weird, but also, this zoo is local to me, and it’s weird that somewhere just up the road a bit is making national news because of this. I’ve fed their giraffes many times; I haven’t been there since the spotless one was born, though.

Tin,

Looks like a certain candidate may find himself double-booked on March 4.

Tin,

I have a pretty straightforward solution. I keep a text file called ‘todo’ in my Syncthing sync folder, and I added ‘cat Sync/todo’ to my Fish greeting.

Tin,

Jenna Ellis, a lawyer who assisted Mr. Giuliani in his efforts to keep Mr. Trump in power after he lost in 2020, expressed frustration over the looming legal costs a few days after her indictment in the case. “Why isn’t MAGA, Inc. funding everyone’s defense?” she asked last week on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Oh look, a crack in the wall.

Tin,

I was with this guy at first, blaming rich men for the exploitation of mine workers. But then, in verse two, he turns around and points the finger at people receiving welfare. I stopped listening after the quip about “Fudge Rounds.” Just shows that these kinds of conservatives correctly identify the problem, yet are still brainwashed into blaming the poor. The cognitive dissonance is intense.

Tin,

Oh, it’s going to be great if there’s a camera on him in court. Not because I particularly want to see him, but because I know that the presence of cameras will greatly increase his likelihood of acting up, speaking out of turn, and repeating false things, all for his “audience.” We’ll see how long it takes for him to forget he’s in a court of law and not in a talk show interview chair.

Tin,

Oh yeah. Vivek Ramaswamy, who is an Indian American, is running a blatantly white supremacist campaign. The mind boggles.

Nothing about the dude makes sense - including the apparent hope that American conservatives who bristled at the name Kamala (“She is named after a Hindu goddess! Literal satanism!”) would vote for someone whose name is Vivek Ramaswamy.

Jack Smith Has Set a Trap for Trump (statuskuo.substack.com)

Trump plans to assert an “advice of counsel” defense, claiming he was just following the legal advice of his attorneys. However, this defense comes with conditions that could undermine Trump’s case. By asserting this defense, Trump would waive attorney-client privilege, meaning communications with his attorneys would...

Frankie and Benjy?

Tin,

Sorry, I tend to gush a little bit about Genesis, they’re one of my favorite bands. Thanks for indulging me!

Tin,

Good one! It was certainly an unexpected cover when it was released, and it wouldn’t surprise me if the Johnny Cash version had overshadowed the original in terms of audience familiarity. I’m also fond of Nine Inch Nails’ cover of Queen’s “Get Down Make Love”, it was a rather niche track for both bands - so much so that despite being a Queen fan, I heard the NIN version first.

Tin,

7 Wonders Duel is specifically a 2-player version of 7 Wonders, and it’s very well done. Familiar enough to anyone who has played the original while being entirely unique mechanically. I really enjoy it.

Also, you mentioned it, but the Asia expansion for Wingspan is great as a standalone 2-player game.
