Why do you think current quantum computers are fake? As far as I’m aware they exist at a small scale. At this point isn’t it mostly of a matter of getting costs down and cooling them so you can get enough q-bits to do something really useful?

Didn’t they drop support for that almost immediately? Do any modern kernels support PS3 hardware?

I’ve been using ZFS for a little while now and have been intending to take advantage of snapshotting more. I’m going to have to try this out.

Where will I get my pregnant Sonic fix now?

It’s been a while since I’ve used Rainmeter, but I love that thing. Such a flexible utility.

Barely-related tangent, but in Breath of the Wild enemy archers have a much reduced chance to hit you when they aren’t within camera view. I thought it was a weird artifact of culling assets but I’m pretty sure it is actually an intentional difficulty decision to help warn players there is danger without them getting damaged by something they can’t see. It’s not impossible to get hit when not looking at enemies (maybe 1/10 hit?) but I figured out I could run out into an area, point the camera at the ground and basically not take damage from archers. Kind of fun.

Besides the Sony account drama (I don’t care about multiplayer), anyone know how this actually runs performance-wise? I usually assume these ports scale well since it’s a PS4 game but Sony launches have been all over the place.

The whole gaming industry is in a slump because no one is trapped inside due to Covid restrictions anymore so people aren’t buying/playing games at the same rate they were 2 years ago. Studios are trying to trim the fat as much as possible, regardless of the human cost of restructuring.

Circle of the Moon is great. My favorite of the series.

My designs have never been good enough to optimize much. I just scale out instead.

The newer Ecobee’s can run entirely locally through their homekit integration. I tie mine into home assistant and use it that way. I would never have bought the device if that wasn’t available.

If this old version doesn’t have that available then I’m assuming people purchased it knowing that it was reliant on cloud services. It would be nice if they offered customers options besides just letting the device turn into e-waste but you can understand why they don’t want to burn development hours on a device that’s a decade and a half old.

Just another reason to never buy devices that can’t function without a cloud service.

This makes me curious about the effect of nozzle shape on the output. Would a square holed nozzle work or look different than a normal round nozzle? What about an oval or star shape? Hmmm.

Toribor,
@Toribor@corndog.social avatar

Yeah that sounds about right. Maybe it would have potential applications with non-planar printing? That’s still pretty experimental territory I think.

If you primarily game using Steam then it’s easier than ever on most popular distros. Biggest hassle is likely still GPU drivers. I’ve never had any issues there but depending on what card you have you may be better off with either proprietary or FOSS drivers depending on what your distro of choice likes to provide by default. After that most games tend to just work, a handful may require you to pick a beta version of proton or something.

If you want to try it and don’t want to do a lot of tinkering check out PopOS. It’s probably the friendliest distro for gaming out of the box.

Pop_OS is based on Ubuntu. It’s developed by System76 which sells linux laptops that run their distro by default so it’s very well maintained and polished.

It’s a popular recommendation specifically for people looking out to try gaming on Linux because there are specific features built in like performance improvements for gaming and some gaming-specific packages whereas Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora and OpenSuse are generally designed to be a general purpose distro. Pop_OS delivers packages as flatpacks by default as opposed to Ubuntu’s snaps which are a bit controversial and also uses their Cosmic desktop environment by default (though as far as I know gnome, kde, xfce, etc all still work fine if you have a preference).

Mostly I recommend Pop_OS for people that are new to Linux, don’t know about why they might prefer one distro over another, and want to try it out with the minimal amount of hassle. If you aren’t gaming Pop_OS is still great but that’s one of it’s selling points.

I think you’re on to something actually. Back when Saints Row 3 came out I read an article explaining how it’s childish irreverence toward gender was actually sort of progressive. In character creation there is a boob slider and a dick slider (with insane proportions for both), character voice doesn’t have to match the body type, there are no gender restrictions on clothing, characters are available to romance no matter your gender, etc.

Basically the game was so unrestrained and goofy that it subverted some uncomfortable gaming tropes like boob sliders by just letting players do whatever they wanted and not taking it too seriously.

If you could take a single character out of a piece of media (book, film, TV show, video game, etc) who would it be?

They would lose any magical powers they may have had in the book, but anything they are, rather than can do, will stay. For example people from the His Dark Materials world would keep their daemons. You can take them out at any time in the story’s plot, but for all other people consuming the media, it will be shown that the...

It’s crazy that I still have a ton of gamecube controllers in perfect condition that have hundreds of hours of use each and yet I’ve got a box of useless joycons.

They literally don’t make them like they used to.

In the Ultimate comics Reed actually uses his stretchyness to make himself even more intelligent by creating new wrinkles and pathways in his brain with his powers. He fixes his astigmatism too by just stretching his eyes back in the right shape resulting in better than 20/20 vision. It’s kind of weird comic book science but I think it’s a cool evolution of stretchy powers, truly controlling and manipulating the plasticity of his body on a conscious level.

This is really insightful. I’d thought about how trivial travel is in our modern era but this really puts into perspective how isolating it was back then.

I couldn’t find any ansible modules for managing ZFS so I ended up doing it using the command module which is rather clunky and prone to exceptions I hadn’t thought of.

<span style="color:#323232;">- name: Import zfs pool
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> ansible.builtin.command: "zpool import -d /dev/disk/by-id {{ item.name }}"
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> become: true
</span><span style="color:#323232;"> register: import_result
</span><span style="color:#323232;">  changed_when: import_result.rc == 0

Who is the guy between Gale and Halsin? I don’t even think I’ve ever seen that character. Is he holding a hedgehog?

Using the sun to darken natural vegtan (beehaw.org)

I made this catch-all tray for a friend's housewarming but I wasn't happy with the natural vegtan color so I propped it up in a sunny window for three days. My needle holder from the same hide is there to show the contrast of how much the color changed and to remind everyone to wear sunscreen 😎

Does this process dry it out at all or cause it to stiffen?

I’m new to leatherworking and am considering trying this out with some adjustable straps for a costume piece I’m working on. This looks great and seems to speed along the natural look without dyes.
