Tundra,

For the OS: Debian

Hardware: a modern thinkpad

Tundra,

Stock android is definitely enshitified - but there is still hope with custom os’s

Tundra,

What I don’t understand though, doesn’t using mullvad automatically set their own DNS?

Tundra,

Ive recently managed to do this;

Settings> Network & Internet> Hotspot & Tethering> Allow Clients To Use VPN

Tundra,

Then its no longer stock?

Tundra,

Fair enough - we are agreed at least then that the default android os is awful for privacy.

Tundra,

You too!

Tundra,

Had a similar issue as did one of my friends with pixels, which is unfortunate as grapheneos is one hell of a operating system.

After having 2 different pixels break (planned obsolescence) I ended up settling for a fairphone (which I can easily repair and replace parts myself with e/os - but divestOS also looks promising.

Tundra,

Agreed.

For any (k)ubuntu refugees, do as I did and switch to Debian!

Tundra,

Exactly the same issue with me, I bought it on Good Old Games when I used to run windows as I love the premise of GOG, a similar ethos to Linux of actually owning software - but steam proton is just infinitely more practical.

Tundra,

I’m guessing these are points to debate in class?

Wild if not

Tundra,

I’ve also had issues with brave search on mull, whenever it decides It to check if I’m a robot it says that mull is missing a requirement

short question by an aspiring user

Hello, apparently hanging out in Lemmy inadvertently makes you thinking about using Linux. I am planning to install Linux Mint cinnamon on an older laptop, which I want to bring to LAN Parties. From what I read I can just format my C:\ windows disk, install Linux via bootable drive and from what I understand, proton is basically...

Tundra, (edited )

I use GrapheneOS, I run Instagram in a seperate user profile within its own storage scope alongside an app called “Tracker Control” and block most trackers that way.

trackercontrol.org

Tundra,

On the “meta” user profile yes, blocking trackers is more important than hiding my IP for that user profile

*Finally* found a decently priced laptop using AMD's 780m iGPU | Lenovo UK Laptop configurator (www.lenovo.com)

The worst part of using a gaming laptop on Linux is that, despite the great work of open source developers and hobbyists, it’s still way too clunky to use a hybrid graphics setup imo. Once you want to use an interface that’s only connected to one GPU (such as HDMI) you’re left messing with switching utilities like...

A question about privacy, health apps and Smartwatches

So back when I wasn’t as privacy conscious as I am now, I started using Huawei Health as it came with a device. Now i’ve done that for about 6 years. Started with just counting my steps to eventually buying a Huawei fitness band for the integration and to have even more data in the app. It’s a good band but… it’s still...

Tundra,

So this sent me down a rabbithole.

I can’t answer about exporting data but having just done some research the 2 best options I have found for a privacy focused solution (open source) are either:

Bangle JS banglejs.com

PineTime www.pine64.org/pinetime/

For me the bangle seems superior - I’m tempted to get one!
