@atomicpoet but that's the point... Linux has won everywhere EXCEPT the desktop? It is the appliance-os of choice that can only ever be exposed to techies or hidden behind proprietary front ends. It leads on penetration, but only when it sacrifices the dream of democratising the desktop. Would this kind of 'backend success' be a win for the fediverse? Yes... But only if my 'digital footprint' can be nomadic and idempotent. It's VERY exciting...but a lot of problems still to solve.
@atomicpoet totally agree: but my point was "what is winning"? If it's 'getting installed' then 'hooray!'. But one of the dreams for Linux was democratising end-user software and experiences....and it hasn't, and possibly cannot. It's a technical win (which pleases me hugely - I LOVE WSL) but the freedom lives in the end-user space...which is still owned by big corp. It's done so much good in the world....but an OS is an ecosystem, not a piece of software...and it hasn't won that fight.
@numberisnan@atomicpoet which is great : I've been running elementary for a few years, and PopOS! Desktop linux is great if you don't mind putting in the effort, but it is a kit-car vs a production model in the desktop world. It definitely democratises software, but it needs you to love it for what it is: most users do not have the patience to deal with the ideosyncracies. Hence why 'corporatised' versions (Chromebook, Phones) that shield the user are so successful. Just different 'winning'.
@doctormo@atomicpoet 👍👍👍👍👍♥️♥️♥️ so much this.....and so very applicable to Chris's point about the FediVerse too....this is definitely 'winning'....although I don't think it's a challenge that is ever 'won'?
@nf3xn not on their hardware, no. Certain simple but deeply annoying config niggles make it unacceptable for end users (middle-click takes up most of touchpad, brightness controls can turn backlight off) through to poor GPU performance, apps (outside the PopOS store) being unable to update, and PopOS apps being unable to update due to those apps! Hardware issues like weird bluetooth issues and WiFi 'just turning off' were probably more related to using unsupported kit.
@nf3xn and dual screen detection slowly drive me mad. Undock, go do something, come back.... Need to restart UI to detect screen. Sometimes. Or bring prepared to reboot before presenting. Or doing an OS update and it stops working until reboot...these seem to affect a lot of linuxes too.
