Voroxpete,

Shane Black is always a good time. Nice Guys is definitely one of his best.

I enjoyed it for all the reasons I thought I would, but I definitely did not expect the whole thing to centre on a very real crime. That definitely caught me off guard in a good way.

Voroxpete,

Disney doesn’t really care all that much about box office dominance (except insofar as they want to be number one in everything because capitalism). Streaming is their biggest revenue source by far, with the second biggest being the parks.

No, for real. Disney makes more money from parks than they do from movies. Even with the billion dollar successes from Marvel, movies are still a solid third on their balance sheet.

Voroxpete,

No, but they do fit streaming and TV, which as I mentioned above is their number one money maker by far. Like, to be clear, streaming and TV make 1.5x as much as parks, merchandise and movies combined.

Voroxpete,

While I completely empathise with your frustration, I still don’t understand why this leads you to attack the people doing the most to address the problem, rather than the people doing nothing, or actively making it worse. That’s just self-destructive behaviour, and worse, it hurts everyone else at the same time.

Voroxpete,

The one that immediately comes to mind is Wolfgang Amadeus, by Phoenix.

Voroxpete,

This album goes HARD and I fucking love it.

Voroxpete,

This is… actually an astonishingly good way of explaining this concept.

I literally might end up seriously using this.

Voroxpete,

Surprised to see no mention of the Edgerouter X in this thread so far.

Honestly, if you’re looking for a simple, highly customizable router that comes with its own hardware, and don’t mind supplying a separate access point, you really can do a lot worse than the ERX. They’re small, highly affordable, use very little power, and it’s all just Debian under the hood so you can do an astonishing amount with them.

Voroxpete,

Honestly, your average SOHO router can easily be turned into a good enough access point. I’m using an old Asus router for mine. A Ubiquity access point is also a solid choice for cost vs performance. Or give TP-Link a look, they’re always a decent bet for wireless.

Voroxpete,

In retrospect it was probably a bad idea to hold the fight club at that creepy old mansion on the hill owned by the weird scientist of indeterminate gender.

Voroxpete,

I think it’s probably a lot easier to get people to give Necromunda a try, when a whole “army” comes in a single $50 box.

Voroxpete,

No, lots of indie productions have gotten waivers for complying pre-emptively with all of SAG-AFTRA and the WGAs demands. Both unions have said that supporting these productions is good because it proves that the big players could easily play ball if they wanted to.

It’s not clear exactly why Davis is taking this stance, although it seems like maybe she objects to the fact that the project is backed by Amazon, even though it’s from an independent studio. Silverman’s comments, on the other hand, definitely seem somewhat ill-informed and I think she might want to speak to her union some more before opening up about this, because she’s clearly not on the same page as union leadership.

In general, when it comes to any strike, if an article is quoting a few select members of a union rather the union leadership, it’s probably an attempt to make the union look bad. In any collective agreement you’ll always find a few individuals who don’t agree, or just don’t get it.

Voroxpete,

That’s certainly the impression I’m getting. It really feels like they should have had a much more extensive conversation with their union leadership before going out and kicking over the tables like this.

Sarah Silverman Is “Pissed Off” About Slew Of SAG-AFTRA Interim Agreements For Movies With Stars During Strike, Guild Responds – Update (deadline.com)

Actor-comedian Sarah Silverman is confused about the large volume of projects that have been granted interim agreements by SAG-AFTRA to film during the actors strike. And she is not alone. “I…

Voroxpete,

And the unions themselves have said that these waivers are good for their bargaining position because they prove how reasonable their demands actually are; if the indie studios can agree to everything without a fight, why are the big guys having a hard time? (Turns out the answer is just greed).

Voroxpete,

This method works really well with sous vide cooking. Cook to prefect doneness in the water bath, then remove from bag, pat dry, and sear on the grill.

You can even chill the meat after the water bath; throw it in an ice bath then into the fridge. Then put it in a cooler and bring it to barbecue. All you have to do on the grill is let it sear and warm through to a nice eating temperature, only a few seconds each side and you’re done.

And of course, flip twice to get the good grill marks, bud.

(btw that cross section looks fucking beautiful)

Voroxpete,

One of the coolest gigs I’ve ever been to was seeing these guys and Slow Club perform at a library in Lancaster, England. Like, tiny room, maybe thirty people there, all of just sitting on the floor right in front of the performers. They were fucking nobodies at the time, and it was amazing later getting to see people actually talking about them.

Voroxpete,

“They have not fixed the procurement processes,” Carleton University Prof. Stephen Saideman told The Canadian Press. “They have a personnel shortage. Together, those two things make it hard, just simply hard, to spend money. Even if you allocate a lot of money, the actual spending of it is hard.”

I mean, raising wages is something you can do with a stroke of a pen, and would go a fair towards helping with that personnel shortage. I’m just saying.

Voroxpete,

I’d be interested in hearing more about that.

Where can I learn Docker fundamentals?

I jumped into Docker feet first a few months ago and have not had a real good time with it. Networking doesn’t make sense, I can’t ever seem to access config files without dropping to su -, all the tutorials and videos I find are pretty top level and assume the user already has a firm grasp on it. It’s great for drop in...

Voroxpete,

I was in the process of writing basically this same post, but you’ve already said it very well.

Docker isn’t really a technology in and of itself; its an applicable of many of the fundamental components of Linux to create a specific result. To really understand it you have to understand the technologies it’s built from.

A recommendation I’ll throw in here for OP is How Linux Works by Brian Ward. This book is an excellent first step in really understanding those Linux fundamentals.

Voroxpete,

If you’re trying to keep version updates on sync across lots of machines you might want to look into Ansible.

Voroxpete,

Agreed. Docker is the tool you’re looking for here OP. It will help you make use of your available resources much more efficiently, and management will be easier too.

If you’re not a fan of the command line, give Portainer a whirl. Finding compose files for all of those services you’re looking at should be trivially easy.

Voroxpete,

This is also sometimes referred to as “bridge” mode. Even if the ISP doesn’t officially support it, some googling may reveal how. It’s shockingly easy to find the default credentials for these things, for example.

Voroxpete,

Agreed. The environment minister should no more be meeting privately with O&G execs than a chief of police should be having private meetings with crime bosses.

Voroxpete,

+1 for Caddy, it works great and it’s super simple.
