WatTyler,

Just going to take the opportunity to point out that broad (not universal) historical consensus is that Jesus of Nazareth existed, was baptised by John the Baptist, and was then crucified. It goes without saying that Jesus being the Son of God, Messiah etc. is not the broad consensus.

WatTyler,

It is. Furthermore, as an atheist, I don’t feel like believing in the existence of Jesus compromises my position any. On the contrary, I’ve confused a few less-informed Christians by telling them that I believe Jesus existed but I don’t believe he was divine.

Besides that, stories like the Nativity seem to pretty much just be myth.

WatTyler,

The Wikipedia article has a pretty good summary.

Essentially, we have non-Christian sources claiming he existed from only a few decades after he died. Furthermore, no ancient critics of Christianity argue that Jesus didn’t exist. Then there are aspects of the story that you’d assume early Christians wouldn’t want to make up. This includes him being baptised by John the Baptist. It’s a little embarrassing for the alleged Messiah to be baptised by someone considered to be a normal dude. Sure Christians have kinda retconned its significance but if you were making it up whole-cloth why would you make that part of the story?

Similarly, the crucifixion. Try and take your mind back 1900 years. Crucifixion is a humiliating punishment, designed to shame criminals. If you were creating a mythical figure, in that time, why on Earth would you have him die that way? It doesn’t make much sense. To suppose Jesus is a wholly mythical figure is necessarily to suppose he’s an invention. Sure, maybe you could make a compelling anti-hero from the crucifixion story but you want to be fabricating the world’s first universal religion. Why make your job harder by so closely associating your so-called Messiah with a method of execution often associated with petty thieves and brigands?

WatTyler,

Programmer chuds get bent out of shape that HTML is the single most influential programming language ever made. Think about it, Devs post code snippets to StackOverflow, rendered in HTML. An HTML-interpreter (aka a ‘Software Engineer’) copy pastes the snippet, transpiles it into a Python file, Java file etc. and later in the process you get a binary.

Basic Brogrammers rage against programming behemoth HTML out of bitterness that all they are is HTML’s compiler.

WatTyler,

"The superintendent responsible for the city centre personally discussed the incident with the officer and made it clear that her actions were unacceptable and must not be repeated.

“She, along with other employees, received refresher training on how to deal with similar situations in the future.”

I have no words.

WatTyler,

A lot of the lowest-rung, easiest targets for ridicule are those who are very loudly, uncritically on one side of an argument or another. People who are of middling intelligence correctly identify this as an opportunity for themselves to demonstrate that they are very clever and superior by taking the piss out of the silliest of the left and the right. This leads to Enlightened Centrism™.

This works phenomenally well until they meet someone who has genuine convictions based on their own individual morals and rationale and not how they can differentiate themselves from others.

This is my own slightly bitter, slightly drunken, leftist rant. My own bitter POV is that Enlightened Centrism is a shortcut to smug emotional and intellectual superiority for those who can’t come up with their own convictions.

WatTyler,

Is that supposed to be a dick pic? Genuinely took me a minute to figure out what I was supposed to be looking at.

If these aren’t fake, I don’t understand how Red Bull can say Horner is innocent. This is horribly inappropriate behaviour. Any woman would be put off working at RBR now, in case they’re subject to the same exploitative power dynamics.

WatTyler,

Going against the grain I think this is better than last year’s (I miss Derpy Max though) but not as good as the year before last’s.

WatTyler,

I was diagnosed eighteen months ago. I knew I needed medication. It’s helped for sure but it hasn’t fixed everything and I am about to try a higher dose. Aside from the medication, I wanted to understand why I was different and why I had so many difficulties.

WatTyler,

Can someone explain to me what Reddit’s costs are supposed to be? It’s not like they have to pay licences for things like music or have to host insanely large media files. Their content generation and moderation is free. For a long time their website was barebones and they didn’t have to make an official app. I can never even recall them advertising until recently.

WatTyler,

She’s literally British. She was raised here and it’s the sole citizenship she holds. What we are doing is illegal and a shirking of our responsibilities to Syrian people, Bangladeshi people, and her. If she’s a criminal and an extremist, it’s our job to accept her back and deal with that. If she was an adolescent who made a series of terrible errors, endured the most traumatic things, and is genuinely repentant, it’s our job to accept her back and deal with that.

WatTyler,

For anyone reading this comment and assuming it’s facetious, may I please direct your attention to the Rwanda asylum “plan”?

WatTyler,

Taking this post as a platform to rally against cutlery that isn’t fashioned from a single piece of metal but has a useless metal or plastic handle. When you take them out of the dishwasher, a pool of warm, stagnant , vaguely soap-smelling water will pour out onto your wrist and wet your sleeve and my week is ruined.

For the record, I haven’t experienced this in years but I carry the trauma.

Charles Windsor is the Head of State of Scotland (along with the rest of the UK). Yousaf is the ‘Head of Government’.

Irish unification referendum by 2030, Sinn Fein leader tells Sky News (news.sky.com)

Mary Lou McDonald had previously said unification was within “touching distance” after the return of power-sharing government to Northern Ireland, led by her Sinn Fein colleague Michelle O’Neill. But she acknowledges there is “an awful lot of work to be done”....

WatTyler,

Half us English are malding already; the other half find intermittent enjoyment in their malding as a coping mechanism.

WatTyler,

The Wire. The opening themes are pretty great (with the exception of Season 5) and for some intangible reason the intro always feels like a core part of setting me up emotionally for the episode. Especially with Season 4. The ominous and dark rendition from the Baltimore school kids feels like an essential mood setting piece for a very sobering season.

WatTyler,

Amazing opening theme and it does such a great job building a sense of place. Even during the show’s most dramatic arcs, it does a great job of reminding us that the show is fundamentally about a very normal, relatable man with very normal and relatable concerns.

I adore The Sopranos.

WatTyler,

Those epigraphs are so brilliant. I’m always on tenterhooks waiting for the line to come up in the episode.

WatTyler,

Watching through S5 for the first time right now and it’s growing on me. I think I’m not keen on the vocalist? S2’s theme was my favourite, which I believe is the original version of the song? Also I freaking love season 2. Genuinely think it’s my favourite of the four I’ve watched.

WatTyler,

Right, so, you won’t believe me but I totally thought the vocalist could be Waylon but then I just figured that they’d gone for someone local to sing it and it was a bit sheltered of me to assume that Waylon’s actor was the only one with that accent 😅

Thanks for confirming.

WatTyler,

Yet another moment in British politics that has flooded me with anger and upset, followed by despair that there’s nothing I can do to rid us of malevolent, hateful bigots like Rishi Sunak.

WatTyler,

For Brianna’s mother’s sake, I’m relieved that Sunak used the correct pronouns when he spoke about Brianna at the end. However, what does it say about Sunak and this bullshit, culture war transphobia that he did use the correct pronouns for Brianna?

The whole thrust of the attack was to imply that Starmer doesn’t know what a woman is but then when it’s convenient, Sunak tacitly agrees with Starmer that Brianna was a woman.

I’d almost have more sympathy for Sunak if I thought he was a misinformed transphobe. I resent him more because I don’t believe he genuinely cares, like some do. I have never had any reason to believe he thinks there is any problem with trans people. Yet, he is willing to endanger the lives of these beleaguered, threatened innocent people, for what? For the fucking Conservative and Unionist party. A reprehensible institution that has done infinitely more damage in the real world than any trans person has caused in the most batshit, unhinged nightmares of a Mail Online commenter.

WatTyler,

I’d love to see a version of this with all the black changed to a stark white.

WatTyler, (edited )

The UK of GI/NB has already annexed Anglesey and given it to Leinster.

WatTyler,

Kingdom? Who are the ruling dynasty?
