The new class war: A wealth gap between millennials (www.cnbc.com)

There may be another factor creating so much wealth among millennials: inheritances. In what’s known as “the great wealth transfer,” baby boomers are expected to pass down between $70 trillion and $90 trillion in wealth over the next 20 years. Much of that is expected to go to their millennial children. High-net-worth...

WhatsThePoint,

It’s so dumb and insecure. I don’t give a flying fuck about this peacock culture. You got to realize 90% of the time people think about themselves and really aren’t paying as much attention to you as you build up in your head. I care about assholes using their wealth to fuck others over - that’ll get my hate - not envy.

WhatsThePoint,

Because selling bibles as the second coming of Jesus Christ seems to be working for him. His supporters love his fantasy world, he’s try to make himself seem even more “crucified for them.”

WhatsThePoint,

I used Nord VPN after a lot of research when I initially started using them years ago. What have you heard about them?

WhatsThePoint,

They didn’t aggressively advertise when I first started using them like 6 years ago. I have yet to see evidence of their no-log policy being broken but it’s hard to trust most companies these days.

WhatsThePoint,

That was my rational too when I initially did my research.

WhatsThePoint,

These fucking industries are so stupid. Stop spending your money fighting needed change and use that money to develop viable alternatives. Long run it’s a much smarter investment because you aren’t going to stop the change humanity needs to survive. Business people are pretty dumb when it comes to these seemingly obvious choices.

WhatsThePoint,

When America had actual regulations on shareholders and things like stock buy backs back in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, shareholders didn’t have this leverage and STILL got obscenely rich. Reagan was the beginning of the hardcore shareholder strip mining of American businesses. We need to reinstate a lot of our previous good ideas.

I don’t understand why these legacy game license owners don’t start licensing out their old games on the cheap to game services like Apple Arcade or Steam to get extra revenue on them. They learned that lesson in video streaming and it gave a ton of mostly dead IP new life.

WhatsThePoint,

Zuck read Ready Player One and wants so badly to be James Halliday. He just wants to be loved. 🤣

WhatsThePoint,

Thank you for stating the context! People always want magic wand fixes but changing rules and laws at government level have so many moving parts and counteracting forces to overcome. It takes time. Too many people just immediately assume it’s some negative skeptical reason without knowing the details.

WhatsThePoint,

Saving a drowning man doesn’t have people trying stand between you and the drowning man. Just because a new president comes to power doesn’t mean he just gets to change things from previous administrations on a whim. Those powers that helped see it pass don’t just disappear. Government is fights and compromises and those take time. You deal with the other party and special interests paying whoever they can to move forward or obstruct anything to their advantage. Right or wrong it’s reality of government. Changes in government rarely are bi-partisan enough to pass quickly.

WhatsThePoint,

The reason the right has been kicking liberal asses lately is their unity. That unity was mostly due to the torrent of dark money from billionaire foundations like the Koch network pushing an agenda, but none the less they moved this country so far right it will take decades to change things. The left needs to learn to stop attacking the few people we still have in power so hard and look at the bigger picture. You will never get progressive change quickly, it takes a long coordinated movement. It’s an election year and we know our options are Biden against the anti-thesis of progressivism. Lets rally now and push Biden for change after the election when we have ensured we elected someone who could actually listen.

WhatsThePoint,

Thanks - I forgot about this episode of the Intercept podcast. Good to re-listen.

‘In the US they think we’re communists!’ The 70,000 workers showing the world another way to earn a living (www.theguardian.com)

The Basque Country’s Mondragón Corporation is the globe’s largest industrial co-operative, with workers paying for the right to share in its profits – and its losses. In return for giving more to their employer, they expect more back.

WhatsThePoint,

I live in a red state, it is common to call any collective action communism. It’s common historically for the right to call collective action or ownership communism.

WhatsThePoint,

Policy takes years to implement and typically isn’t that visible in the short term. Considering the overwhelming opposition he has had from the Republican house, a conservative supreme court, and a billionaire lobbying and foundation network with vast political power, he’s done a surprising amount. So many people think presidents have unilateral powers that they just don’t in our system of government. These are the same checks that kept Trump from enacting some of his wilder flights of insanity in office. You can’t measure government change the way you stated because government just moves more gradually. Sure, so much more needs to be done, but expecting one president to course correct it as drastically in less than 4 years as would take to be blatant to your daily life is unrealistic. Trump gutted the EPA and other regulatory agencies in his presidency as much as he could get away with. Budget cuts and weakened power can’t just be reversed overnight. So Biden had to undo the damage then attempt to broaden their powers while the supreme court ruled on limiting them in his presidency. It’s not as black and white as you state. Biden isn’t perfect on a lot if issues, but he’s done way more for the environment than I thought he could with the head winds he’s facing. I will say this, they need to better job getting the things that have done out to people. With a news media who is owned by the same companies fighting change and the fractured state of information delivery in general, that will be a challenge.

WhatsThePoint,

I agree more needs done. I just don’t like when it’s portrayed as from a lack of trying or caring. There is just a lot of psychotic billionaires out there pushing against change who don’t care what happens as long as their power is intact. We are becoming so close to an oligarchy due to all the dark money pushing against change. I’ve seen the entire way issues are discussed shift drastically extreme right in my life time and if you read books like “Dark Money” by Jane Mayer, you know that came from billionaire foundations. Biden has done more than Obama or Clinton for many progressive causes and it’s so overlooked. No one person in our government can do it with our system but if we tear down the few trying because they couldn’t just make it happen immediately in a complex power structure we are only shooting ourselves in the foot in my opinion.

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek surprised by how much laying off 1,500 employees negatively affected the streaming giant’s operations (fortune.com)

When Spotify announced its largest-ever round of layoffs in December, CEO Daniel Ek hailed a new age of efficiency at the streaming giant. But four months on, it seems he and his executives weren’t prepared for how tough filling in for 1,500 axed workers would be....

WhatsThePoint,

Gasp - it’s almost like these jet setting CEOs just don’t know that much about their day to day operations. Maybe they should spend less time tongue fucking each other for being “captains of industry” and more time doing the actual job they are paid obscenely for. They are supposed to ensure the company is running properly, not just push up the stock price.

WhatsThePoint,

China made American companies partner and share their IP with Chinese companies to access the Chinese market when the Chinese market was opened to outsiders back in the 90s. That’s how China caught up to us in technology, they straight up stole the IP and changed terms on the American companies. I believe there is some tit for tat happening here. China has done a lot of fucked up shit and they are definitely actively hacking American infrastructure and social engineering against American interests. They are harvesting American data and tweaking the algorithm to actively undermine American interests. Whether you agree or disagree, China started this fight. China has banned most American social media already.

WhatsThePoint,

I agree privacy bills need to be passed. 100%. One of the main reasons I am typing this here instead of Reddit. I’m just pointing out this is far from just an unprovoked action for profit. There isn’t enough talk in this debate about the host of messed up shit being done to America by China (and Russia) in the digital space. Cyber attacks are at all time high. It sucks Tik tok is getting banned, but privacy laws aren’t also being rolled out. It’s also true that China is indeed using Tiktok’s data maliciously. Both things can be true. My statement was to point out it’s not JUST a cash grab by social media companies, China is also a real threat and that shouldn’t be overlooked. I work for an ISP so I see the threat day in day out.

WhatsThePoint,

I thought the forced sale was trying to get it to be able to stay around because a ban was so unpopular while accomplishing the same goal of breaking China’s access to the algorithm and collected data. They tried the Oracle housing but Byte Dance kept giving access to engineers with ties to the CCP. Either way, I just get an overall vibe in this debate that people aren’t considering China a big threat and I think that’s a mistake. Not saying you specifically but the discourse that I have read across many posts.

WhatsThePoint,

Reading the bill further - it does mention the banning of the sale of American’s data to foreign adversaries enforceable by the FCC. That language does sound like a ban on data brokers selling to China too. It will be difficult to enforce with shell corporations and non-adversary country’s corporations who may partner with Chinese companies, but the language seems to be there. Be interesting to see how this plays out.

WhatsThePoint,

No doubt the sale would monetarily benefit someone and I’m sure lobbyist pushed it, but since Byte Dance didn’t comply with the original work around, I don’t see a much better solution to remove the CCP’s influence on Byte Dance and the app. It’s definitely not as black and white as much of the discourse I’ve seen. I appreciate discussing it with you and I see many of your points. Data brokers are indeed out of control. I hope the language in the bill banning data brokers from selling to foreign adversaries is somehow helpful in getting the ball rolling on deeper limits to data mining. Precedents being set to limit them could be a good first step.

WhatsThePoint,

This was the original compromise, but Byte Dance repeatedly gave access to said servers to engineers with ties to the CCP against the agreement’s stipulations. Byte Dance broke the compromise.

WhatsThePoint,

Right?! As well as banning social media. China has banned basically every American social media long before this.
