On a related note, Nana Visitor, after DS9 ended, had some difficulties with new roles. She was unwittingly channeling Kira and ended up being repeatedly told by the director to not. She also confessed to occasionally having Kira’s nightmares.

I was dubious going into this video. I was expecting a tirade about how Picard should’ve doubled down on nostalgia from day 1 and villainizing Patrick Stewart for wanting to do something different.

Instead I got a very thoughtful analysis about fundamental mistakes made by the writers that put them in the train wreck that it became—wanting to try something new, but not committing; over thinking TNG and under thinking Picard as it’s own thing.

I also strongly agree that Picard as a space Indiana Jones series would’ve worked so much better than a washed up vineyarder. I’m honestly surprised that I never considered this until watching this video.

How common is it for certain actors to be contractually obliged to appear in every episode of a series?

I watched a review of the TNG episode "Thine Own Self" a while ago where it was mentioned that Picard doesn't appear until the very end after Data gets back to the Enterprise, after all the scenes of Crusher having the bridge and Riker observing Troi taking the test to becoming a commander. They suggested that Patrick Stewart...

My limited understanding is that the studio is paying for that actor to appear in every episode, regardless of if the actor is necessary. So to get their money’s worth, they appear in throwaway scenes.

Obviously depends on the contract, and it’s just as probable that I’m talking out my bum.

You’re over thinking it. The theme only needs to be inspired by LCARS, not 1:1 recreate the on screen experience.

So some secondary colors, some nostalgic font choices, and creative liberal use of rounded corners would be a good non-invasive first step.

While I have no experience theming for Lemmy, I’ve done theming for phpBB for some personal projects. With the staff’s blessing, I wouldn’t mind taking a stab at it.

Yeah, like how Spotify and the like are trying to take over Podcasts, which were designed to be open.

TBH, I think the Startrek Community has the right idea.

I believe Lemmy instances should treat themselves like ye olde message boards. Have a specific interest and accommodate it. So a Star Wars instance, a Marvel Instance, a DIY instance etc… They should act like message boards, but with the key advantage of linking up with the greater federation.

Things like geography aren't very conducive to finding content you're interested in.

Machine translation:

"New traffic senator, new plans for Berlin roads: Planned cycle paths should not be further expanded for the time being if a parking lot or lane would be eliminated for this. Not only associations see this critically, but also district politicians."

A moment of silence for Camino and OmniWeb… excellent Mac browsers that couldn’t join us in the modern era.

I'll vote for Prodigy's Time Amok.

The premise was really creative and it was delightful seeing the cast work together while not sharing the spot light with each other. And oh Gosh… poor Rok-Tahk.

Perhaps it's a sign of the limitations of having simply Voyager vs an actual Starfleet presence. With just Voyager, they can simply and honestly forget with everything they have to juggle on their own.

Whereas if Starfleet was around, there would be constant contact (as opposed to incidental run-ins) and entire departments dedicated to long term relations.

Adblockers for Safari

Hey everyone, I've recently gone back to using Safari as my main browser and I really like it, with the exception of being a little lost when it comes to the options for adblock extensions. I have Wipr, but I don't love the lack of customization. The two I see mentioned most are Adguard and 1Blocker. If I were to pay for one...

I'm a fan of a multi-tiered approach.

For system wide, I update/replace my etc/hosts file with the one generated here. The advantage is that this blocks ads system wide—not just in Safari. They simply cannot load at all on your computer. It's free, but updates have to be preformed manually.

Next, VPNs often add an additional layer of protection. Apple offers one with iCloud subscriptions, but I'm also fond of Lockdown

And then finally for an actual Safari extension, I use 1Blocker, which I guess actually answers your question.

Wait… wasn't Ghostery shifty because it was both blocking ads while also making it's money off ad tech companies?

Wooster,

I've not tried Adguard, but I was fond of and a user of Ghostery before the reveal that they were blocking ads on one hand, while also reporting to ad tech companies.

As for how to compare all three of them… that's hard to say. All blockers hit the major eye sores on popular sites like Reddit, Google, and Facebook. Day-to-day you're not going to notice a difference.

The complication becomes that Blocker 1 may block ads A, B, and C, while Blocker 2 blocks ads A, B, and D. One is not necessarily better than the other, but more that they have different scopes.

Then there's the fact that some sites refuse to load content if they detect you aren't loading the ads. It's not really the adblockers fault even if it's a consequence of using them.

Unfortunately, running multiple adblockers has a non-zero chance of causing unintentional conflicts where both blockers try to attack the same ad.

Which brings me back to my method of having my cake and eating it too. By using a VPN, a custom hosts file, and a browser extension, I have multiple non-conflicting layers that protect me better than any one solution.
