Good day fediverse! You might have noticed my instance social.wyndix.dev has been down for weeks by now. I'd like to clarify, the person behind this account, "wyndix", is not dead. It, however, is. :ablobcatcoffee:
Wyndix was an attempt at hiding, it was a false identity, a construct. I had been a victim of repeated abuse, and I was afraid to show myself because I knew I was going to be harassed.
If you use #ddclient for your #ddns, beware. In my Debian install, ddclient.conf had read access for all users, giving access to DDNS credentals to virtually all users.
Just so you realize how dangerous this is, anybody with access to a user account can change your A records and point them to their own servers, without you noticing. And all of this from a very simple API.
I don't like to be annoying but just as a reminder, I #selfhost my #Calckey instance now. Please follow me on @wyndix because I'm quite lonely x)
If I haven't followed you yet PLEASE don't you think you have any less value to me. I appreciate every single (positive) interaction I have here in the fediverse.
You guys know I don't like to get political but this is something else...
Today I found out about #transautism. Basically, it consists of "transitioning" to become an autistic person cuz why not? Yeah, faking having #autism sounds like a great idea. </sarcasm>
Not only do I think this is somewhat harmful and stupid, but also incredibly offensive. Legitimately, how are people not freaking out over this?
XMPP is so much faster than Matrix because that's totally how protocols work and it's not like "speed" can be measured in a hundred different ways with none being technically invalid, while also them being different products for different purposes so comparing them is actually a bit stupid
@joel They are also different in terms of functionality. While Matrix makes use a room-based federated system, XMPP uses the MUC protocol to allow users to join groups and exchange messages. The details are boring but Matrix tends to be more flexible in federated spaces
Also, in XMPP e2ee is only provided by plugins, while in Matrix e2ee encryption is inside the spec
I could go on but all in all this just leads to the same conclusion: Different protocols, different purposes. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
@Wyndix
OTOH chat protocols are for humans to comunicate, so there's quite a margin in milliseconds before it makes sense to say software A is faster/slower than software B.
@Wyndix We use a layer system similiar to MacOS or android that allows users to still modify their root without modifying the system directly by using overlayfs to overlay a Data volume over the System volume.
We also use flatpak to distribute images, which does all the complicated ostree work for us.
