Not really though. In Europe teletext was very prominent (and is still available today, at least here in Germany). It’s basically a newspaper on the TV.

Now, the only person I know who still uses it is my granddad who wishes nothing more than for the internet to be more like the teletext.

I think one of the issues, why there terminal is seen as necessity is, that there are almost no tutorials that refer to the gui. So if you’re a newbie and try to find out how something works like adding a third party repo to your package manager or making an install script executable, all you get is a command. You don’t get a “add this address to the list in the settings menu of your package manager, which you can find here”, for example.

Chromium was, however, a Google product from the very beginning that Google open-sourced themselves. Linux is too big with too many non-profit and for-profit companies and tons of independent individuals participating in its development for one person or company to control it outright.

I mean, sure, for profit companies like Red Hat, SUSE, Canonical do have some influence but not so much that you can’t ignore their contributions if you don’t like them.

For example, some ubuntu based distros (i.e Mint) circumvent snap from being installed the ubuntu way (without asking) because it goes against their philosophy. And if that’s still too much Ubuntu for you, there’s a Debian Edition of mint. And if that’s still too same-y for you, there are dozens of other distros based on slackware, rhel/fedora, arch, Gentoo, etc. There even are Linux distros without GNU.

So, unless Muskiboy buys Linus Torvalds, I think the Linux community could easily ignore him building his own xOS.

Because it’s really cool tech and unlike burning coal, oil and gas it’s CO2 neutral. And alternatives like fusion reactors are still decades away, at least, and we can’t build renewables fast enough either.

In my opinion shutting down all nuclear powerplants was the stupidest thing the government here in Germany has ever done, especially since coal is still being subsidized and our planet isn’t getting any cooler.

Well, they are worse in the sense that, if renewables were a viable option, you would choose those instead of nuclear. And nuclear does produce more waste than renewables. However nuclear is still miles better than fossil fuels and in cases like yours definitely the best choice to fill the gaps.

Yea, bit gimp is particularly difficult to learn. A few years ago, when I first needed something more complex than paint.net, I of course first downloaded gimp because it’s free. It was difficult to use, to say the least. But sure, I didn’t have any experience with more complex image editors. However, just to see what the difference is, I also downloaded Photoshop and didn’t have any trouble at all. Everything I needed to do was easily understandable and the UI was very easy to use. I haven’t used any once of them before and I haven’t used Gimp since. (Also tried krita btw, only found it mildly easier to use than gimp, still miles behind Adobe).

That isn’t to say, that professional OpenSource software can’t be intuitive and well designed. Today I used kdenlive for the first time because premiere didn’t support the codec+container combo I need and it was a very pleasant experience. A very familiar interface, if you’ve used any video editor before. I didn’t go in-depth but it didn’t immediately alienate me like gimp did.

Yea, had to use google for a few searches and man was it frustrating. Like, I was looking for the new beta nvidia drivers on Linux, and google, for some reason, didn’t see it necessary to show me the official nvidia site in the first page of results. In DuckDuckGo, later that day, when it was available again, it was result N°1

Bing is the default engine in Edge which is the default browser on Windows. There’s a huuuge demographic who doesn’t care enough to change either of those.

Also, Bing profits from other search engines using their results as a base. DuckDuckGo, for example, uses Bing as their primary source for search results. And in my experience is better at it than google, these days.

The gap has been favouring bing (DuckDuckGo) for a while now in my experience. Every time I use Google or just doesn’t find what I’m looking for. Just a few days ago, when Bing was down and I had to use Google, I tried searching for the new beta nvidia Linux drivers. Google didn’t even include the official nvidia site in the first page of results. When I later searched for the same thing again, using DuckDuckGo, it was the first result… and stuff like that happens every time I need to use Google. The only category Google still seems to have a slight edge in is current (as in happening right now) events.

Rockstar, EA, Ubisoft, Epic, Blizzard and probably some more all make you use their launcher/account as well. Sony doing it is no different. Doesn’t make it the nice thing to do but it’s the sad reality of PC gaming. The price of flexibility is having to deal with tons of accounts (or piracy).

Well, unless you exclusively play games made by small indie studios and that are distributed directly, that’s still the price you need to pay if you want to consume said content while playing on a PC. Or you pirate and thus don’t support the people who created it. I don’t like that situation either and there are some developers I definitely won’t support with my money. However, that decision isn’t based on the need for some account, when it’s trivial to make one. That’s annoying but the dealbreakers should be scammy, unfinished games, predatory, gambling-like micro transactions, bad company culture, etc, not the need to have a burner email account.

You seem like a very angry person.

Having to make a PSN account isn’t exploiting you anymore than you’re already being exploited by having a Steam account, which you do have when you bought the game on PC. You don’t even have to give Sony any real information. Faking one’s birthday and using a burner email isn’t that hard to do. It’s annoying, it’s a dick move by Sony and yes, you should complain about it, but it’s not the culmination of all capitalist evil.

Linux, great. Blender, great. But hell, I‘d rather pay for Photoshop than using gimp (or Krita). In reality I’m doing neither since my work pays for Photoshop for me and I only use my Linux machine for gaming. I do sometimes miss paint.net since I stopped using Windows.

Yea. Someone higher up at PlayStation (I forgot who, might have been the CEO) recently said that they believe PC gamers would buy PlayStations to play exclusive sequels to their PC games (like Horizon Forbidden west, which is not yet on PC). Forcing PSN accounts for their games on PC opens the door to getting a PlayStation just a little bit further.

Works great. Had Linux Mint running on a 2008 Unibody MacBook. If your Msc is a dual graphics model, Linux might even be the only software way to revive it (or ensure it keeps running. The dedicated graphics always break and you can disable them in GRUB). Have Mint running on one of those for my grandparents as well. The only gotcha for Linux on Intel Macs would be the wireless drivers but I know that Mint’s Driver tool will do the work for you nicely. You might just need an ethernet connection for the installation. There are no further incompatibilities that I know of.

Alternatively, if you’d rather run macOS on a Mac: Open Core Legacy Patcher is a tool born out of the hackintosh community that allows you to run current macOS versions on unsupported Macs fairly well. The same 2008 Unibody Macbook did a decent job running macOS Ventura.

Only recommendation in either case would be to throw in a cheap SSD. The old non Retina Macs are easily upgradeable and not running on spinning rust can make the system much more responsive, no matter which OS you’re running. And if you’re already in there, the RAM is also easily upgradeable and 8GB get you a lot farther than 4GB. And DDR3 SODIMMs are also getting ridiculously cheap.
