in recent peer review news, a paper from my group got really savaged by the reviewers at a usually-solid CS conference -- across the reviews they complained about basically every single thing we did

and of course this happens at the same time that multiple companies have expressed interest in that project, argh.

@regehr argh; sorry to hear this. the ones where every review has a different strongly-held objection are the most discouraging. (I speak from extremely recent experience)

No matter how many times it's explained to me, and regardless of whether I temporarily get glimpses of a world in which it just might make sense, I just continue to find myself fundamentally unable to grok the International Date Line. It's kinda like Continuation Passing Style in that regard.

I choose to believe Merkle trees were invented by Chancellor Angela Merkel and I have no reason to revisit this assumption

when I learned about computer architecture, there were two immutable truths: (1) Intel had an insurmountable 1-node process technology lead, so the best processors were stuck with their monstrous ISA, like it or not; and (2) x86 was and always would be backward-compatible through 1979, taking on new instructions each year like barnacles on a whale but never shedding them.

I’m still grappling with the now-long-gone death of #1, and now this! (h/t @regehr) https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/developer/articles/technical/envisioning-future-simplified-architecture.html

I wrote that blog post I threatened a while back about “flattened” ASTs. I did a little microbenchmarking of a toy interpreter and the results were surprisingly good?? https://www.cs.cornell.edu/~asampson/blog/flattening.html
