My director told me about a conference that she really liked and wanted to sent some of our principal engineers to. It was the O'Reilly Architecture Conference... But unfortunately, it's not a thing anymore. What's your favorite alternative conference that's close to that one?

hazelweakly,
@hazelweakly@hachyderm.io avatar

@irvingreid I've spoken at it before! It's quite good. But I'm not sure it has the same feel as the architecture conference did. I never got to see that one in person, but I heard about how fantastic it used to be

hazelweakly,
@hazelweakly@hachyderm.io avatar

@fuzzychef I don't know! I only heard about it second hand, but the people I know who went to it early on enjoyed it quite a bit!

@hazelweakly @jmsdnns James and I go way back, and FWIW I appreciate hearing about an existing text that corroborates my assertion

@hazelweakly@hachyderm.io avatar

@anthrocypher @jmsdnns I'm sorry for jumping into things, then! โค๏ธ

You probably didn't phrase things poorly, I just see so much of that type of reply in bad faith that it's hard to see the well intentioned ones sometimes

For sometimes very good reasons, leaders right now are scared of dealing with extended constituencies. But they're also the only way to build something with outsized impact in an internet age.

I don't love VC-scale businesses for their own sake, but I do love the internet.

@jmsdnns @anthrocypher are you aware of who you're replying to and how extensive their expertise is?

Forget YAGNI, the real advice is PPPPP: Probably gonna Phuck up Parsers, Protocols, and Permissions

auth system? phucked up
regexing your html? phucked up
anything involving email? phucked up
are computers involved at all anywhere? you're phucked

just say no to making silicone think

Look, when computer science departments have some of the worst learning outcomes of any department on campus maybe they SHOULDN'T be elevated as the experts on how students should "learn with AI" with the only reason being "computers"??? Just saying. I will gladly listen to the absolute heroes in CS who HAVE centered teaching and ARE incredible teachers but I guarantee their colleagues aren't.

hazelweakly,
@hazelweakly@hachyderm.io avatar

@grimalkina applies real well to industry too, if I'm being honest. Whole lot of "opinions on how to level up your engineers by person who's never once thought about how to uplift their teammates" energy going on right now

I've spent the week reading like 50+ papers on learning to remember what I know about how people learn and this is what I know:

-people are bad at deciding what to learn
-people are bad at studying. We choose the worst ways to study and we hate the most efficient ways
-people give up on learning so much. Like more than anyone believes
-people aren't clear about what their goals really are for learning and if you try to get people to set goals they don't want to
-teachers truly work miracles

hazelweakly,
@hazelweakly@hachyderm.io avatar

@grimalkina any favorite papers? :)

But yeah, learning and methods of memory are a very fun topic for me but it's absolutely wild to me how completely alien "learning how to remember" is from how we're taught and "want" to remember things (if I'm remembering the last stuff I read on this topic correctly... heh)

I would burn so many gpus and do many questionable things if it got me the ability to throw a magic wand at a fuck cluster of terraform and tighten up / debug all of the AWS iam bullshit going on in there.

Sincerely,
Has now spent two days trying to debug EKS + KMS interactions

@mpuckett259 I understand it enough to be dangerous, but I don't understand it enough to look at a completely generic error message and instantly mentally drill down through 8 Layers of abstraction to know what is actually happening

hazelweakly,
@hazelweakly@hachyderm.io avatar

@mpuckett259 literally my life right now. It's unreal

Peak Infrastructure Brain Rot is having to dig through dozens of posts, articles, hundreds of pages of documentation, only to find the one single line buried in the middle of a help article:

"The grant must be created in the account where the autoscaling group is, not where the key lives"

Ughhhh. So infuriating. I get it, there's nothing you can do to solve the problem in all generality, but for FUCK'S sake

hazelweakly,
@hazelweakly@hachyderm.io avatar

Forget distributed tracing for microservices, I need distributed tracing + a service graph for IAM

And on top of that: a helpful button in Cloud Trail where I can click on a event with a permission denied error code and have it just spit out what's required to grant access for that event

If you combined that with a nice little visual graph and a way to dump out CLI commands or cloudformation? It'd be game changing

Or, y'know, you can build an AI chatbot bullshit and be useless about it

hazelweakly,
@hazelweakly@hachyderm.io avatar

@sandorspruit A significant amount of the duplicate and spread out documentation is actually all around the official documentation in AWS itself. So it's not even that they're necessarily trying to get More views!

I empathize that it's an incredibly nuanced and difficult conversation to have and everyone's going to have different trade-offs, so it's really hard to make universal documentation for this

But the lack of tooling to even attempt to solve the problem bugs me deeply ๐Ÿ˜…

hazelweakly,
@hazelweakly@hachyderm.io avatar

@clementd that snapshot feature is awesome. It's a shame pretty much nothing "speaks" biscuits natively

hazelweakly,
@hazelweakly@hachyderm.io avatar

@clementd of course once you do biscuits one must naturally go all the way into doing macaroons because even though biscuits are cool, macaroons are even cooler

Who doesn't want their API to secretly be a prolog interpreter?

hazelweakly,
@hazelweakly@hachyderm.io avatar

@clementd oh fun! I've only seen articles on both and I've always wanted to play with them (or try them out for real), I just haven't had an opportunity present itself yet

hazelweakly,
@hazelweakly@hachyderm.io avatar

@clementd eyeroll I just realized I flipped biscuits and macaroons in my head and swapped datalog for prolog. Sigh. Biscuits are indeed the cooler one

Still, haven't played with either yet! I know fly.io did macaroons and I'm excited to see more about what you get up to with biscuits :)
