@aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place

I'm a just a small town AAA graphics programmer in Chicago. I worked on Gears 5 and Gears Tactics. My work is secret, but my personal projects are not.

I like to post about my personal research, various side projects, and I like to think out loud a lot. Expect weird humor, esoteric ramblings, and occasionally also art I made out of math. I like implicit surface modeling the normal amount. Amateur spoonie. 🏳️‍⚧️

Curses are just blessings with caveats.

I think it's true though.

I did a full write up on Cohost because I don't love making threads here: https://cohost.org/klara/post/6082327-boot-efi-pop-os-a

But the short of it is that Pop OS gave me a 512M /boot/efi partition, and with 240M(!) initrd.img files coming with current kernels, the math just doesn't work anymore.

And while I can imagine various rabbit holes to go down to deal with this, I don't know which will be how painful. (I'm already using "COMPRESS=xz".)

@klara so, if it were me, I would probably grab a "live usb" version of popos if they provide one (usually distro installers are this these days anyway) and use gparted to very carefully resize your partitions and shuffle them over so you can expand the boot partition in place. The Arc Linux wiki states that a 1GB boot partition is recommended for UEFI boot partitions when you intend to have multiple kernels.

aeva,
@aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@klara obviously back up your shit before hand. If the live usb is also your distro installer, it can come in handy to recover if something gets mildly screwed up, since it only really needs to rebuild the boot partition.

I wish there were something to translate video essays into short form blog posts. I imagine the hard part would be extracting good images from the video to supplement the generated text.

That seems like the sort of thing "ai" might be able to do passably, but I assume the field's dominant focus on spam generation and privacy invasion is indicative of the technology's limited general utility, so maybe "ai" isn't actually useful for this sort of thing. Oh well.

EDIT: apparently video summery is a thing now, which is probably close enough

@BartWronski do you know if there's anything like this that's small enought that I can run it on my own machine?

@jordan ok that's a cool idea :O

cannot emotionally relate to the people who get mad about paying higher tax rates than folks who make/have less than them

all that energy goes to being mad about paying a higher effective tax rate than people who make/have way way more than me

aeva,
@aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@maya I'm sure there is no small amount of "person on the tv/internet/whatever told them to be mad about it, they unfortunately internalized it passively without critical examination, and haven't yet had cause to examine that."

Hey software license knowledgeable friends. We recently put code out for a paper that is BSD licensed.
What would happen if some other company forked it and made a bunch of changes/ improvements?
Would it still be copyright EA in the license on their fork? And it'd have to stay BSD right?
Ty, random curiosity :)

aeva,
@aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@demofox @pkhuong the wording is such that if a patent troll contributes to an aparche2 licensed project, they automatically grant the right to use any relevant patents to the project. It is meant to help mitigate against a kind of legal trojan horse essentially.

Interesting fact, getting new followers here on Mastodon is harder then in all of the other social medias combined😅

aeva,
@aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@collaborationgames it's important to follow lots of people at first, and be generally be active. there's about 6 or 7k active accounts on our instance iirc, so there are a lot of eyes on our local timeline. there's no algorithmic feed, so if you want a lot of people to see a post, make sure to post it during one of the peak hours, and boost and reboost it during the other peaks.

aeva,
@aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@collaborationgames people follow hashtags to find stuff, so be sure to use them if you don't already. that's a good way to find stuff by interest

aeva,
@aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@collaborationgames scan through your profile every now and then and think about what someone making a snap judgment might see or miss

aeva,
@aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@collaborationgames don't be shy if someone posts something you're interested in. if you're not really interacting with the community people will tune you out

aeva,
@aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@collaborationgames every now and then there's signup surges, usually corresponding to one of the social media silos shitting the bed. that's a fantastic time to be active. don't be afraid of reposting your best material during newbie surges

aeva,
@aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@collaborationgames also I think mastodon these days has a heuristic for recommending people to follow to new signups. a friend mentioned I was recommended when he made account, so I'm sure that's probably led to a bunch of follows. idk how often people stick around though, I don't track that

aeva,
@aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@collaborationgames but yeah, generally, the more you befriend like-minded people the more it'll start to snowball

aeva,
@aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@collaborationgames hm. since you're profile is setup more like a brand presence, I imagine that follows will probably be more weighted by whether or not you're successfully connecting to people who are more interested in your game or games specifically. I don't know how well that generally works on mastodon though. you might see a difference if you set it up more like a personal profile, but it's hard to say

aeva, (edited )
@aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@collaborationgames how you dress up your profile and what you decide to post is essentially how you decide what people will expect from you and what things they won't. it's a balance between understanding the communities that exist within reach here, what their needs are, and what your own goals and needs are, but you've got a lot of options.
