It's a pixel art day today. I have to adjust the current assets (thankfully not too many) for the less cartoonish scale of the characters. And stop Ren's arms looking like bananas.

@nikki I like bananas.

Next time someone preaches for something they claim is ✨ ✨ and begins with the usual speech about "planning to build a car but beginning with a skateboard", ask them if this is an accepted methodology in the automotive industry.

Ah a coronation, when the British press can take time off from demonising trans people as a clique of weirdos in outrageous costumes who have disproportionate influence and are constantly being rammed down our throats by the media to celebrate a... wait (checks notes) oh no

This is the TV rating system in Iceland. I can't figure out what the "spider" means. There were no spiders in the show?

alda,
@alda@topspicy.social avatar

@grumpygamer Icelander here. This is not Iceland specific, but a Dutch system called Kijkwijzer, which Netflix may use in countries who's local language is listed under "others" in drop-down menus.

See: https://www.kijkwijzer.nl/en/about-kijkwijzer/

Things I'm learning from raising my hourly rate from 90 €/h to 130 €/h:

  • I'm not losing clients as much as I am potentially getting new and interesting ones, fair enough

  • This rate is fair for one-offs

  • Most legacy and return clients should get a permanent 20% discount to offset the raise

  • Subcontracting for someone means that this someone acts as your sales agent, as well as a factoring and collection service where such a thing may not be available and that costs them time and effort

One thing to add is that I am absolutely sure that a lot of freelancers out there actually work at least 50% more than they bill for and probably 100% more.

This is really bad practice.

Can't we just all agree that the Mona Lisa, while being paid work for Lisa Gherardini's family, ended up as a means for Leonardo for experiment with the idea of “what if I was a girl”?

The third episode of Duckman essentially ends with the city being turned into Berlin, but with guns in it.

alda,
@alda@topspicy.social avatar

Episode 4 begins with Duckman rubbing it out over a smut magazine. I think this was the time that RÚV decided to move it from the children's slot to after the 11 pm news.

Does anyone know where I can find the current state of the art on Compute?

And also if there’s data anywhere on computing the environmental cost of compute based on the providers and regions you choose?

alda,
@alda@topspicy.social avatar

@endocrimes I've asked myself this very same question.

I've seen such providers come and go, but I've frankly never seen a proof of their electricity being CO2 neutral for instance.

alda,
@alda@topspicy.social avatar

@endocrimes The thing is that the data centres up in Iceland claim to be using 100% geothermal and hydro but I doubt that is true while energy providers over there are trading their EU ETS certificates for German coal certificates.

alda,
@alda@topspicy.social avatar

@endocrimes Update: So I've been asking around and was pointed towards this one: https://www.bdc.is/

They may be picky about their customers and the ping times up to Iceland may not be the best.

@endocrimes Advania also runs a DC within the boundaries of KEF airport, but I think it is more of a colocation thing for blockchain crap.

alda,

@yesterzine My friends in the humanitarian sector would not find this appropriate though, but honestly it could prove that "dangerous regions" aren't that dangerous.

alda,

@yesterzine Sometimes there is lack of local supplies (hence, things being a humanitarian crisis), but it could shed a light on how humanitarian assistance is not about throwing sacks of flour of of the back of a C-130.

The conventional way of measuring work effort in software development (and most desk-ish jobs) is to measure effort in the unit of "hours of one's arse resting on an office chair".

After I started working from home and then strictly logging and charging for billable hours, I started noticing that on average, I effectively max out at 5 billable hours per day and I don't think that's just an ADHD thing.

Anything else would be unrealistic or simply dishonest.

To me as a foreign resident who is not a fluent German speaker with really bad experiences with authorities and hostile business practices, the (seemingly intentional) complexities of the 49 EUR option just make it unviable.
