How to hide comments that mention a specific word ? (on lemmy of course)

I’m bored of reading how Linux is better than windows, how matrix is better than discord, how foss is better than proprietary etc etc. I didn’t even mind but it’s always the same things everyone says… so anyway I want to hide comments that mention those words I already did it for posts but can’t find an option for...

Boost allows keyword blocking in posts too. I don’t think any Lemmy client offers this functionality for comments.

I’ll happily allow cookies for Notebookcheck, too. Their laptop reviews are exemplary.

To be fair, the majority of truck owners in the US don’t actually use their pickups for anything that would necessitate owning a truck in the first place, so the complete lack of shelves and the weird flatbed probably didn’t stand out as immediate red flags.

Leaked NYT Gaza Memo Tells Journalists to Avoid Words “Genocide,” “Ethnic Cleansing,” and “Occupied Territory” (theintercept.com)

The New York Times instructed journalists covering Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip to restrict the use of the terms “genocide” and “ethnic cleansing” and to “avoid” using the phrase “occupied territory” when describing Palestinian land, according to a copy of an internal memo obtained by The Intercept....

Same here, lol. It’s been a long time since the NYT was a reliable news source, especially with regards to anything involving the Middle East.

The term ‘genocide’ might be contentious, but ‘ethnic cleansing’ and ‘occupation’ shouldn’t be. They literally describe Palestine since the creation of the state of Israel itself.

*than the less restrictive states in the US.

What sets the US apart is how wildly the laws vary by state, with 10 states currently allowing no exceptions for rape, incest, or life of the mother, i.e total, or near-total, bans.

In contrast, while many countries in Europe limit abortions to a point between 12 and 20 weeks, there are almost always exceptions and circumstances where an abortion can be granted medical approval.

In that case, you are well within the majority of Americans. What’s odd is why Republicans appear hellbent on pushing extreme religious views into law when much of the country is against it.

Here’s a more recent breakdown.

www.cnn.com/us/…/index.html

You’re right in that many of the states where abortion is banned supposedly allow exceptions when the life of the mother is at risk, but in real terms that often translates to healthcare providers being too scared to carry out the procedure, or leaving it too late, for fear of legal repercussions.

Your experience reminds me of the time I was sailing on the Java Sea. On deck at night, lit by starlight, I could look up and see the Milky Way from horizon to horizon. It was the closest I’ve ever come to having a transcendent religious experience, like I was in direct connection with the infinite.

Humanity robbed itself of a true treasure if you ask me.

Couldn’t agree more. It should be mandatory for all humans to see it at least once.

We already do, though.

Ah, I know what you mean.

Yeah, the way it works now I think the file picker relies on Nautilus to generate the thumbnail first, so any new images will use a placeholder instead. Once you’ve viewed the file in Nautilus once, though, the thumbnail will show up in the picker from then on.

aleph,
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

Depends on your use case, I suppose. I’m generally editing existing images and files, so I had practically forgotten that the picker doesn’t generate the image itself. For me, thumbnails work perfectly 99% of the time, but for someone who is constantly working with freshly downloaded files, I can understand that it would be a pain.

Two volunteer doctors working with Doctors Without Borders were killed by a direct hit from an Israeli airstrike on Al Awda hospital back in November, so that’s at least one example.

Yup, same here. I’ve also used it to write shell scripts and figure out unique ways to configure my system that I would have been hard pushed to achieve via a web search. It’s incredibly useful.

That’s no justification for selling a >$1,000 MacBook Pro with only 8GB of RAM, though. It’s specifically marketed as a professional-class machine.

aleph, (edited )
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

It’s clear that the M3 MacBooks are noticably slower with 8GB or RAM than with 16GB for various tasks, though, including photo & video editing, and 3D rendering.

Sure, 8GB gets the job done but why are Apple selling “professional” grade laptops in this price range that clearly require additional memory to reach peak performance?

British accents are non-rhotic, so really it should be “ga-ridge”, not “gare-ridge”.

True, albeit a very small minority.

I think they mean that it’s non-partisan. The movie clearly is broadly political.

Also PairDrop. I tested a few of these sharing apps and found this one to be slightly better for reasons that I can no longer remember.

Not self hosting - just using the web app.

Because a significant number of people still interact with the desktop via mouse rather than keyboard shortcuts.

Hell, I use hot keys for most things but I still often prefer to quickly minimize a window with the cursor instead of reaching across the keyboard. The first thing I do with a vanilla Gnome installation is get Tweaks on there and restore window buttons.

Trump declines to endorse a national abortion ban. He says limits should be left to the states (apnews.com)

NEW YORK (AP) — Former President Donald Trump said Monday he believes abortion limits should be left to the states, outlining his position in a video in which he declined to endorse a national ban after months of mixed messages and speculation....

Ah yes, equating the termination of unborn festuses to the enslavement of grown, conscious men, women, and children. Such a reasonable argument, my good sir.

aleph,
@aleph@lemm.ee avatar

I guess I might think that too if I mistakenly believed that an embryo with no functioning organs or the capacity to feel anything was the same as actual, breathing baby, both morally and physically.

Fortunately, though, it isn’t.
