@Cmastication do you know of a calculator for "in hindsight, was this insurance 'worth it'?"

to put it another way: what magnitude of claim will make having this insurance better than regularly saving & investing the same amount as the premiums

I can imagine working all of this out from first principles, but would be even nicer to just find a calculator or explainer on the subject

@jennybryan @Cmastication Very interesting thread. What I haven't considered before, and clear now, is that your risk profile changes with age.
And, no, I didn't insure my pets either.

I made the gongtimer quarto extension to help me present lightning talks.

It adds a thin progress bar and elapsed time bar at the bottom of your reveal.js slides.

If you ever wanted to insert weather-related icons into a project, I've made an extension for this.

I'm a big fan of using Komoot to plan hiking trips in areas I'm unfamiliar with. This is a short but scenic walk to the Durdle Door rock in Dorset. The English seaside experience at its finest.

@simon we went up Portland yesterday and found a lovely coffee shop but the weather wasn't favourable for a long walk, sadly.

If you're remotely interested in how people like Ariely and Gino come to be where they are today, you really need to listen to this week's episode of You're Wrong About, "Mindhunting with Sarah Weinman".

I promise you it's the most relevant reflection I've ever heard on the matter, even if Marshall or Weinman aren't even talking about that.

@scheidegger Thanks for the hint. I haven't heard of Gino or Ariely before, and now I'm intrigued. I've just read https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2023/10/09/they-studied-dishonesty-was-their-work-a-lie

I've released an updated version of the {config} package to CRAN.

config 0.3.2 has several new features, especially better handling of R expressions in the config.yml. In particular, you can now refer to other configuration values in the R expression.

The package also has a new function with_config() that might be useful for testing and in vignettes.

CRAN has published a policy for using code in an package. https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/using_rust.html

@brodriguesco @jonthegeek I've used just enough Rust to be able to write some apps, but haven't yet used Rust inside an R package of my own.
That said, the policy seems reasonable to me. Somebody who might have a strong view on this is @josiah , author of the {valve} package that wraps Rust.

Let's say that I'd want to compile instead of installing it using a binary. Is there some in depth guide explaining its dependencies, how to build those and ultimately rstudio itself? I see a lot of js libraries getting used and installed using yarn in the source code

@hadleywickham any documentation available on this? the INSTALL file available in the repo for example doesn't mention that the source code of visual mode (panmirror) comes from the quarto repo (if I understood correctly)

@brodriguesco @ronblum I think the best place to find information on how to build RStudio is is the wiki in the github repo at https://github.com/rstudio/rstudio/wiki
This contains instructions for building RStudio for various platforms.
