AI as a religious cult. "The millenarianism and manifest destiny of AI and techno-futurism."

@matthewskelton@mastodon.social avatar

@puercomal it's a capitalist cult 💥

Y'know how there's a pattern of behavior where someone says something is bad about the tech industry or community or OSS software or something, and then every single nerd within a 50 square mile radius says WELL ACKTUALLY??

I just realized that if, like, even 10% of them just... Sat down and spent some energy fixing the problem instead of insulting someone for experiencing it, we would've solved all those issues by now

@matthewskelton@mastodon.social avatar

@hazelweakly on a tangent, the "I think logically without emotion" thing is also so cringe because it's so demonstrably untrue.

Humans are driven by emotions and that's a good thing: it's where significant innovation comes from. The idea that we can or should ignore emotions is bizarre and cultish.

(I know you likely agree - just articulating it 😁)

If you have people/teams in your org who prefer to build/host their own stuff in a non-core domain, this form I created back in 2018 might become handy. They can sign it with their not-invented-here sweat and blood.

@matthewskelton@mastodon.social avatar

@s0enke superb! 💪🏼 Would you consider contributing a story/experience to the new edition of my book on Software Operability?

See http://operabilitybook.com/

The story behind that signed form sounds fun!

Small structured experiments designed the right way force organizations to do something very radical: pre-commit to the evidence that we agree would force a change.

@matthewskelton@mastodon.social avatar

@grimalkina and of course the scientific method is a challenge to coercive control ... so many organisations will never actually adopt an evidence-based approach.

Coordination Dynamics: A Foundation for Understanding Social Behavior – Tognoli et al (including Kelso) (2020) https://stream.syscoi.com/2024/05/30/coordination-dynamics-a-foundation-for-understanding-social-behavior-tognoli-et-al-including-kelso-2020/

@matthewskelton@mastodon.social avatar

@antlerboy that looks amazing 🤩 thanks for sharing

@matthewskelton@mastodon.social avatar

@antlerboy "According to Coordination Dynamics, such laws specify the flow of coordination states produced by functional synergies of elements (e.g., cells, body parts, brain areas, people…) that are temporarily organized as single, coherent units. These coordinative structures or synergies may be mathematically characterized as informationally coupled self-organizing dynamical systems"

This kind of thing was what I was reaching towards in the Team Topologies book ... but there's more to do...

Less about tools that boost productivity, more about tools that reduce total workload.

@inthehands the whole Microsoft business proposition is basically "jobs for SysAdmins" (now with added domestic abuse vector). 🤷🏼

A temperate rainforest in the Lake District has been declared a national nature reserve in a move that will protect the rare ancient habitat for future generations.

The Borrowdale rainforest is one of the few surviving examples of a “mysterious and untouched” landscape that covers less than 1% of the UK.

The area’s high rainfall creates a humid environment resulting in lush, moss- and lichen-covered woodland with ancient oaks and other historic native species.

For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.

@matthewskelton@mastodon.social avatar

@mhoye @GossiTheDog Recall seems to be a giant data suction pump with no escape.

Use Chrome, Firefox: scrape the data via AI
Use Edge: slurp the data directly

The whole Part 3 of the Team Topologies book 📗 is about continuous adaptation, but it's the part that most people ignore or miss. The most important part!

The key is in using the team interaction modes to sense misplaced boundaries for flow, and then negotiate using group techniques to find better boundaries... continuously.

See this mini-book for practical ideas: https://buff.ly/3wLZ9fR

"Surprisingly, our results show that women's contributions tend to be accepted more often than men's. However, when a woman's gender is identifiable, they are rejected more often. Our results suggest that although women on GitHub may be more competent overall, bias against them exists nonetheless."
