Lemmy.ml and beehaw.org getting hammered with traffic because of spez ama

Both were down for me before, they seem to be up right now but just made this account on Lemmy.blahaj.zone (Henry is the name of my actual blahaj lol). It's probably because of the traffic influx from reddit refugees from the absolutely disastrous spez ama (where he doubles down on everything and doesn't apologize at all)....

anji,

I haven't noticed at all, because I follow communities on lemmy.ml and beehaw.org from my own instance. I had this experience when Mastodon.social kept going down during major Twitter exodus phases. Federation is awesome.

anji,

Of course. Here's a quick one:

Pros:

  • You don't depend on anyone else's funds or time
  • Always available and snappy no matter how busy some parts of the Fediverse get
  • You choose who to federate with. Want to talk to both puppy-lovers and puppy-haters? No problem.
  • It's a social media account you really, in every sense of the word, own. Nobody can take it away from you. The lemmy.ml admins could accept the billions* they're surely being offered right now for their instance, but my account is still mine.

Cons:

  • Hosting costs some money, knowledge, and time.
  • Unless you subscribe to specific communities (or people, in the cast of Mastodon) those posts will never reach your server. So you don't really have a "Federated" timeline

*I'm joking about the billions. Probably.

anji,

The "subscribe & push" model is practically fundamental to ActivityPub. There's pros and cons to this design, but ultimately I think it's confusing and cumbersome for users..

anji,

!creative seems like a suitable community for 3D art and sculpting etc.

  • anji,

Reddit has a strategy for this which works quite well. I'm not sure how it works, but I suspect it's something like sorting posts in each subreddit you've subscribed to, scoring them based on their popularity inside the subreddit (irrespective of the absolute # votes), and then mixing these posts together on your feed. So an unusually popular post in a niche 100 subscriber subreddit can still easily climb to the top of your feed.

    anji,

That soundtrack immediately calms me down. I've only grown to like it more over time.

    anji,

For a first playthrough I'd just play the game stock. In fact I still usually play the game stock. Mods can be great fun, but they alter the gameplay experience and the base game is still excellent.

If you're having some trouble getting into it, for a first playthrough try playing a stealthy archer. It's so satisfying in a way melee and magic just isn't, and it doesn't interfere with the roleplaying elements.

    anji,

Petz... 5 came out in 2002? I remember when Dogz and Catz released. I feel old.

I hate time zones, especially when I'm stupid

The primary application at my job was...not well written. Originally .NET Framework 3.5 with a strange collection of approaches to MVC. SQL Server for data. I claimed it look like something written by CS students fresh out of college on their first job. Turned out I was close...it was written by 3rd-year CS interns. We've fixed...

    anji,

Self-hosting video sounds awesome, but it seems challenging if it were ever going to scale. Mastodon and Lemmy instances are already struggling hosting a social media platform. Streaming video sounds 1000x more difficult.

    anji,

Hi. I just noticed this post. Yeah that's my personal instance which I use to interact with the "Lemmyverse". I also have no idea what went wrong with https://lemmy.world/post/13572 ... My best guess is it's some kind of incompatibility issue between Lemmy versions which caused this post to bug out.

    anji,

I knew I should've loaded up on BHAW when it was cheap!

    anji,

Baldur's Gate, and especially Baldur's Gate 2, are so good. I also occasionally replay them. The magic system is still IMO the best of any CRPG. Playing an evil group in these games just doesn't work that well. I tried it, and most of the quest options are there, but feels pretty unsatisfying. I'd try Tyranny if you want to get this experience.

    anji,

I'm intrigued by it, but I don't really understand it. The list of "magazines" appears to be randomly sorted. I guess "posts" are Fedi hashtags while "threads" are link aggregator posts..?

    anji,

I believe defederation is one of the best things about the Fediverse. People who say objectionable things have the right to free speech too (within reason), but I just don't want to see it or interact with them. Defederation enables peaceful coexistence in a way which could never work on a centralized social media platform.

    anji,

This is more an AR (or MR) headset than a VR headset. It's not trying to compete with the Quest, it's trying to compete with other mixed reality products which are also currently quite expensive.

    anji,

No I did not. Yup, that's a much cheaper XR headset. Though Apple's offering here will have over 2x the resolution which may make a difference in productivity use-cases such as virtual monitors.

    anji,

We'll see. Personally what I really want is a translucent AR display, so I can see the actual light rays of the world hitting my eyeballs combined with pixels. Of course that's mostly an unsolved engineering challenge...

    anji,

Prices (PCE) have gone up a lot. Wages (ECI) have gone up a little. So logically most of the extra money everyone pays for goods and services (inflation) is going somewhere other than wages...
