Not just the politics, but the news threads I feel have degenerated into ragebait topics with shallow conversation. I used to find a conversation or 2 a day to participate in, but now I don’t want to touch many news or politics threads.

I’ve been a bit concerned as well. I had gotten to know a fair number of regular commenters, but I haven’t seen probably half of them recently.

New subs are still joining the community, but it’s still low participation. The big communities still seem to be growing steadily, but it’s not necessarily bringing the positive attitude that initially won me over to Lemmy.

For those new to the group, they don’t fall off due to the way their tendons are arranged. When they are relaxed, the tendons in their feet lock, holding them in place. They have to engage their muscles and do the equivalent of standing up to let them go.

If you haven’t seen the mega post in talons, check that out here.

For just the tendon info, with some animations, click here.

It’s been one of my favorite facts. It’s such a simple physiological difference, but it is so beneficial to an animal who lives in trees.

Owl1 is looking to make the move for that plump black mouse before Owl 3 notices it’s there.

Owl 2 is waiting for the drama once Owl 3 does notice.

Edit: seems leading with a pound sign makes text really big!

Paying too much attention to everyone else’s business and not their own… 😁

“Mark’s goal wasn’t to interfere with a man who was providing reproductive health services,” defense lawyer Brian J. McMonagle said at the time. “He was trying to protect a 12-year-old boy who only wanted to pray with his dad.”

I’m not a parent, so I’m not sure if a 12 year old belongs at a protest of any choice of cause. I feel the likelihood of things getting heated is high enough that it doesn’t seem like a safe scenario to place your child. I also don’t know why a 12 year old would want to be at something like this to begin with. It comes off like using your child as a prop in your own political beliefs. If people claim to be against “indoctrination” it seems an odd thing to subject your child to something like this, especially if, as he claims, there were previous incident with Houck and this worker before.

Despite his acquittal, Houck contended in his lawsuit Monday that he and his family continue to suffer.

His wife lost three pregnancies to miscarriage in the last year, he said — events he blames on the stress of his brush with the law. His seven children, he maintained, continue to struggle with anxiety and trouble sleeping.

I’m not going to say anything bad about the wife of somebody I disagree with, and I feel bad for her this has become public information. I also feel it isn’t very compassionate to deliberately put yourself in situations like this for political grandstanding while your wife is trying to have a baby. Again, not a good look to put looking for a fight to win political points above your family. Especially as this man obviously considers the lives of unborn children to have paramount importance.

It seems like he’s talking out both sides of his mouth to loudly profess the importance of family while taking steps to knowingly subject your family to emotional pain and potential physical injury. I’m again left baffled why people choose to vote for someone who doesn’t live to the very values they wish to impose on others.

I’ve seen a major car dealership here plastered with his signs before the election and a few other businesses, and just like those businesses that continue to cover their buildings or company vehicles with Trump banners after everything, if they want their politics to be associated with their business publicly, I’ll help them abide by that by staying away from them.

Thank you, I went back and rechecked the timeline of events, and it seems the 2 incidents between Love and Houck happened on the same day. I had misremembered them as occurring on two separate days.

From the article I linked, it sounds like Houck was there to talk with women leaving the clinic, and to me that still seems a bit inappropriate. If they were just there holding up signs or something, I could be persuaded that having the kid there is not horrible. I feel that would be within his rights as a parent, even if I don’t support his cause. But this seems like him and his son were having direct contact with individual patients. I don’t think anyone wants a preteen boy involved in their personal medical affairs, let along women’s reproductive health. For Houck to do it himself seems like it is within his legal rights to try and provide what he feels is counseling, but to directly engage with patients seems off to me.

To be totally fair, I think Love was also legally allowed to say what he did to Houck, but I also feel it was not professional, especially if he also directed things to the kid. It’s not something he should have been assaulted for, but I think that was in poor taste as well. I get he’s probably had it up to here with guys like Houck, but you still should keep your cool at work. What he was saying was certainly not calming down the situation or being a professional representative for his workplace.

Both men really seemed to act inappropriately, and both parties should call this a wash and move on. Houck seem to just want more PR from it, and I don’t feel anything Love would gain from this would be worth the hassle and expense.

Translated additional article from the zoo for more background

CLICK THIS LINK! MANY GOOD PICS!

FOUR BEAKS FOR SPECIES CONSERVATION

Since 2009, the Austrian Ornithological Institute and Vetmeduni Vienna have been releasing Ural Owls that have hatched into human care in eastern Austria. The aim is to ensure the long-term survival of the owl species. 2016 was the most successful year of the project so far, with 45 birds released.

Zoo Zurich supports the reintroduction of the Ural Owl by handing over young birds. They strengthen the local population and are an important factor in the conservation effort.

In order for a stable Ural owl population to be established, young birds are needed every year to release them into the wild. Currently, 32 zoos and breeding stations in 7 European countries are participating in the project with 49 breeding pairs.

The releases are carried out in two steps according to a proven method. First, the young owls are placed in an aviary at the release site. This allows them to get used to their new environment.

In July, the birds are then allowed to leave the aviary and look for their own territory. If everything goes as desired, they start courtship in autumn.

Since 2011, the reintroduction project has been observing successful natural broods. 2021 was the most successful breeding year so far with 47 young birds from over 20 pairs detected.

However, counting the Ural Owl is rather difficult. He inhabits a large area. This is often difficult to access and is located high in the mountains. The birds’ mainly nocturnal way of life makes things more difficult. In order to measure the success of the reintroduction, the project is therefore equipping the Ural Owls with transmitters.

Normally, Ural Owls breed in tree hollows or on nests of other large birds. In order to increase breeding success, the “Ural Owl Reintroduction” project is also setting up weather-protected nesting boxes. There are currently 550 of them. Volunteer nest box caretakers check them regularly.

The Ural Owl originally had a continuous distribution from Northern Europe via Russia to Japan. While there are still populations of wild Ural Owls in Eastern Europe today, they have been extinct in our neighboring countries Austria and Germany since the middle of the 20th century. The cause of this was hunting by humans and habitat loss.

It is not entirely clear whether the species was also native to Switzerland. There are historical references, but only a few.

I’m wondering if this is a regional or generational vocabulary thing. I do come across research papers using “local extinction” as a proper term, and searching extirpated gives you a definition of local extinction. I have come across extirpated before, but not near as much. We should probably be familiar with both terms with while our climates are still trending to the unfavorable side.

I don’t expect the famed biological journal, People, to use the word extirpate, but I agree with you just calling them “extinct” is a good bit misleading, but they at least acknowledge it at the end of the article.

Edit: Jurassic Park the Laughing Owl, I love its face! There should still be some viable DNA out there.

That got is the second article with all those cute pics.

Good onya, Nigel! Put ‘er in the combi on down to Macca’s so she can bog in. After a sanger or 2, apples, she’ll be. With a little tucker in the belly the sickie won’t last long. That should stop her whingin’ and keep her from makin’ the car a proper dunny. Too right!

An owl needs to eat almost 30% of its body weight a day, so no wonder this owl was so tired.

According to the Barn Owl Trust, they should have the equivalent of 2 day-old chickens, 2 mice, or 3 voles per day.

I hope there wasn’t any rodenticide in the store too, or it may have more problems.

Edit: Had to look up Hammerbarn

Very good tips! I’ll have to save an infographic next time I come across one and get it stuck on the sidebar since the search is still meh.

Here’s a link from the International Owl Center that has advice and a list of US rehabber contacts. They must still be working on the “inter” part of the name! 😁

If you ever do move an owl for whatever reason, mark where you found it so they can try to locate the nest it fell from after they patch it up.
