What scenarios do you envision might arise once animals join our ranks? (spectrum.ieee.org)

I heard about this because someone I know personally on here says she’s helping to work on this (which by the way sounds like it would perfectly fit the format/structure of the fediverse) and I felt too fascinated to not ask. What are some scenarios that comes to mind when you think of this being a thing?

Without more specifics to your scenario, let’s say you’re talking about we make a commutation device for gorillas and cetaceans since they are pretty intelligent, so the most likely to be the first ones we can talk to and understand each other.

Do we still have dominion over them?

Can we come into their homes and take things and trash the place? Do we compensate them?

Do we force our standards of behavior on them? If animals can fight for food and they want to eat your pet and for them might makes right, can a gorilla beat you up and take it? If not, why not?

If we learn they have feelings, a sense of family, or have beliefs where some plants, animals, places are untouchable, do we abide by that?

I think we open this door, we will not be ready for it. I feel it will be like if we discovered a resource rich planet full of sentient creatures with the intelligence of 6 year olds. How have humans done in those scenario before when they have come across those weaker than them? Will we have learned anything?

On a brighter note, if you have not heard of David Brin’s Uplift series of books, you may want to check that out if you’re a reader. I only read The Uplift War, but I enjoyed it.

I came for the eybrows, but stayed for the eyes! So orange!

The face has that air of legitimacy.

Well, they all go in burrows, but only some can dance, otherwise they’d be the Dancing Owl. 🩰

Glad you enjoyed it! I feel much of the info is lost on me. I did pretty good at the game though. I think it said my rank beat 86% of players. I’m studying music right now though, so I do spend a fair bit of time working on my listening skills. Still, I feel I just got lucky.

When your life depends on these skills, you’re only going to be left with the best of the best, so it’s no wonder the animals can do it.

It’s been almost a year now I’ve been Lemmy’s amateur owl guru, and I still learn so much about these amazing animals every day. Such impressive creatures!

I couldn’t find any pictures of Linhart with any owls, but I did find this one of Savelsburg with this baby Eagle Owl.

It’s like if you get 2 people named Bob at work, you need to give someone a nickname!

I couldn’t find the actual video at the link, it seemed to want me to sign in, so I found it on Youtube.

That really took me on a much unexpected journey! 😅

No surprises here, it’s one of the hundreds of pictures of owls on my phone.

I suppose this one is unique in that it’s also a picture of a non-owl.

Tech seems to really be helping owl research, especially as more and more once expensive equipment becomes more affordable and portable.

I know I mentioned again the other day the drones keeping people safe from the harsh winter and dangerous mountains to study the Blakiston’s Fish Owl, and satellite imagery helps find likely nest sites. I was reading about AI trying to decide owl calls today. I covered the iPhones for Owls a while back for them to do audio scanning and mapping.

It’s making things better and safer for the owls and humans, so that’s as good as it gets!

Yes, much less intrusive than whenever I’ve gotten one! 🤣

It was very nice to find this story.

I hope Pappa Owl is ok. I wish there was an update on him.

It’s not bad, but when I try to get people to actually read, I feel I need to entice them a little extra. 😄

It’s nice hearing about everyone working together to help animals in need. I feel there’s a lot of rightfully frustrating things going on grabbing everyone’s attention lately, but it’s still important to remember the good people are capable of, so I’m glad to find things like this to share with you all.

Lol exactly, hence the monopoly accusations. We’re on to you Ticketmaster/LiveNation!
