wrong type of performance strikes again! at least it's not as bad as networking https://larian.com/careers/a4899495-d090-4c75-99b6-e5daf950a2e1

aras,
@aras@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@dotstdy I can think of worse cases, eg “lead performance director” that is part of HR that does yearly performance evaluations.

aras,
@aras@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@dotstdy that reminds me, some years ago Unity launched a “Unity Game Performance” product. Which, turns out, was crash analytics or somesuch. Of course everyone on “the engine” side found about it only after the launch. Tried to persuade folks that this is a bad name, to no avail.

If you use Mastodon on desktop (as opposed to mobile), I cannot praise highly enough Phanpy https://phanpy.social/
It really cleans up my timeline, handles replies very nicely, and allows for a great "refresh" (view updates) experience.

@BartWronski oh wow! some really nice user interface ideas there.

Okay, this meme has been floating around and I really dislike it. I'm not a big fan of gatekeeping programming based on what editor/tools someone uses. I care about what code actually does and couldn't care less about what tool was used to write it. Use whatever works for you.

Some of the best programmers I've met use rando editors like Sam/Acme and Slickedit. Some of the other best programmers I've met use Visual Studio or Xcode. The editor has little to do with why they're great programmers.

aras,
@aras@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@yiningkarlli this. eg I could never understood vim, but I’ve seen some very productive people use it. Good for them! I’ve also seen some folks who spent all their time explaining how vim allows them to be very good/fast, except they were not good and/or never got anything done.

This is the performance regression that I discovered a while ago:

https://github.com/KhronosGroup/SPIRV-Tools/issues/5658

If you are targeting Android devices, make use of fp16 math and you are using a recent build of spirv-opt (last two years), then you are most likely affected. The proposed fix should give you a noticeable performance boost.

So, Unity’s new CEO is from Zynga and EA (and more recently, Fitbit). Mkay, mkay.😢 https://investors.unity.com/news/news-details/2024/Unity-Appoints-Matthew-Bromberg-as-New-CEO/default.aspx

aras,
@aras@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@pervognsen well the previous one (Jim) was an interim CEO, so it was fully expected that he'd only be for like half a year or whatever.

I've posted in the Unity forum asking about staying on BIRP vs moving to HDRP/URP in a project with a shipping window a few years out. Would appreciate any additional opinions. So far nobody is sticking up for the SRPs.

https://forum.unity.com/threads/ok-its-2024-is-it-time-to-move-from-birp-to-hdrp-or-urp.1588410/#post-9807774

aras,
@aras@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@benthroop hard to say what is in Unity’s future plans (possible: they don’t know themselves, or they can’t say). My own guess is that URP is probably “better” soon - SRPs got things like GPU resident drawer and GPU occlusion culling, STP upscaler recently, etc. It also feels like many people who were on HDRP team are leaving Unity nowadays :/

In what has to be one of the most egregious misuses of system resources the Logi+ software on my Macbook was just using 1.5GB of RAM. How is this even possible?

To be clear, this is the Logitech mouse/device management software.

@jon_valdes @bgolus @benthroop “a mouse driver embeds AI” was not on my bingo cards. Maybe it should have, but still omg this is so stupid.

@forrestthewoods nice! You could also use Unity (prob some version older than 2021 - less UIToolkit there) as a “large/complex” IMGUI app case.
