Look, I get that we all are very skeptical and cynical about the usefulness and ethics of AI, but can we stop with the reactive headlines?
Saying we know how AI works because it’s ‘just predicting the next word’ is like saying I know how nuclear energy works because it’s ‘just a hot stick of metal in a boiler’
Researchers who work on transformer models understand how the algorithm works, but they don’t yet know how their simple programs can generalize as much as they do. That’s not marketing hype, that’s just an acknowledgement of how relatively uncomplicated their structure is compared to the complexity of its output.
I hate that we can’t just be mildly curious about ai, rather than either extremely excited or extremely cynical.
It’s extremely common in my generation to sit on their first house to rent out as passive income, and plenty of private investment absorbing starter homes to rent as well
I specifically included individual home owners who sit on their properties to rent instead.
If we’re talking about retired couples downsizing into starters and established families not up-sizing as a part of the larger market dynamics, then homeowners hording their starter home are just as much of a problem.
Investment groups are a much larger problem for sure, but even the smaller players contribute to the larger market trends.
But young professionals who have stayed in their starter for more than 6 or 7 years typically have far more expendable income than when they first signed their mortgage, and can afford to save enough to put down 10 or 20 percent on a newer house (typically further out where the cost/sf is lower) without having to use the proceeds of a sale

but i used spotify for almost 15 years. Averaged out to $8 a month that’s more than $1400, and how much of that music do you think I own?
You can do what you want with your money but I’m not paying another dime to subscription streamers. For discovery there’s still radio and youtube and ad-supported streamers, and I still find new artists at music festivals and local venue concerts all the time.

Been thinking of making a post like this for some time, apologies if some of this is not completely relevant: this community seems more like it’s about Reddit the platform/product than Reddit the social “thing”, but I’m sure a lot of people have similar experiences to mine. Maybe on some instances more than others....
My experience on lemmy has been very similar to my experience working in a startup. I’m constantly concerned that I’ve picked a sinking ship, and concerned that the people I’m on it with are not the people I’d want to sink with. But there’s excitement around being a part of something that’s still playing out, and being able to influence the long term trajectory.
I don’t think the small community is a detractor, though. I’ve felt for a long time that large social media circles quickly fill with the worst kind of content, and normalizes the worst kind of behavior.
Anyway, I think the thing that makes this worthwhile is the decentralization and the knowledge that it’s (for now) safe from corporate capture. I’m happy to be contributing to an alternative to for-profit social media, and that makes all the worst parts of it worth enduring
I might need to try this… I wonder if it makes a difference that the gluetun service is listed last. I noticed that trying to start the containers in the wrong order results in port collision errors, maybe this is why it works for you?

I’m starting to really wonder what the WEBGUI_PORT variable does if not exactly what you’re changing in the GUI… someone else mentioned they got multiple instances to deploy from the same compose file by placing the gluetun service at the end of the file. I wonder if the order in which the containers are deployed is the thing that makes this work. i’ll test more when I have the time
AFAIK the thing that complicates this is trying to run it behind gluetun
docker makes it really easy to specify a unique port on deployment, but when you’re using a network bridge (as in the case of gluetun) the networking settings are controlled there instead, so you can’t use the normal port declarations. It’s apparently not impossible to do it with gluetun but it seems it’s not as straightforward.
Yup, I was only pointing out that i was having trouble doing the same thing in my docker compose (using the webui_port env variable did not avoid port collisions at deployment)
I haven’t tried this particular compose outline though. It could also be the pirate_network they’re initiating or the depends_on variables they’re using, I just haven’t played around with it yet.
