Apparently Kazakhstan is getting rid of one of its time zones tonight. They'll move everyone in that region to the other time zone by setting the clocks back an hour à la Daylight Saving Time.

But, unlike most DST changes, this change will jump from midnight on one day to 11:00 pm the preceding day. And the preceding day is February 29, a leap day.

I hope everyone's time handling software is ready for overlapping edge cases!

Learn from my mistake, make your scripting life easier: I really, really wish I had not used spaces in account names.

I settled on Dashed-Account-Names, which work well for me because I can turn the dashes into spaces for display purposes but I don't have to be annoyed with quoting spaces at the command line.

The display usage is important for me because I share reports with other people. It's far friendlier to have lines like "Accounts Receivable: Dental Insurance Company" than, say, "accountsreceivable: dentalinsurancecompany".

Nimona is a fantastic animated film about a shapeshifting girl who just wants to belong. It's from ND Stevenson, the creator behind the new She-Ra series and the Lumberjanes comic (and the original Nimona comic), among other things.

It's also available for free on YouTube for one week! If you don't have Netflix (or a parrot, eyepatch, and peg leg), this is an excellent chance to watch it. I strongly recommend you do so.

I made a thing!

I put together a set of scalable vector images of flags, set in hexagons.

Hexagons are nice because they tile well and look more interesting than just a grid of squares (or rectangles). Plus there's a somewhat ad-hoc standard of tiling 2″ tall hexagonal stickers on laptop covers. These images are compatible with that convention.

Long shot, but would anyone here happen to be able to invite me to tildes.net?

I'm casting around a bit for a Reddit replacement (as Reddit replaced Slashdot for me nearly two decades ago). I've been on Lemmy for a couple of years and have a Kbin presence now, too, but Tildes feels a bit more like older Reddit (and not too much like Hacker News). So I'm looking to try out Tildes, along with everything else.
