Turns out the most challenging part of following a country shadow is to not get distracted by the hot cowboy grinding his crotch into your ass all around the dance floor.

I've once described a shadow dance with the right partner as "like sex on the dance floor". And while you don't have to dance it that way, it sure is fun with the right person!

I enjoy dancing a shadow (with enthusiastically consenting partners) at the Emerald City Hoedown every year. To this day I can't help but get a stupid smile on my face when I hear that song.

My niece seemed to take the conversation and the dance lesson video I included in the first post in stride, but she's probably rolling her eyes about old people behind my back. And that's OK -- we old people were once her age ๐Ÿ˜

My niece (turns 18 next week!) likes to partner dance and today we were talking about different kinds of dances. East & West coast swing, two-step, Viennese waltz, etc.

I asked if she'd ever danced the country shadow* and she said no. So I dropped some history and told her this story about when and how I learned the dance. If she's recommending books to me that include sex scenes she's more than old enough to hear it.

Shortly after coming out in my very early 20s I started country & western dancing in Austin at the Rainbow Cattle Company. My friend Nick and I were out there most every Friday and Saturday night. I'd been dancing 2-step for a long time but only started learning to follow after going to RCC.

One night the song "You can leave your hat on" started playing and a sexy cowboy in a sleeveless shirt with pearl-snap buttons and tight jeans asked me if I'd like to shadow dance.

I ordered shades for the big picture windows. After ordering I was told they are large enough that they will be delivered by freight.

The freight carrier will call me to arrange a delivery. They'll try 3 times to get ahold of me before destroying the shipment. The delivery date is 2 weeks from now.

So I have to turn on my ringer and answer calls from unknown numbers for 2 weeks or risk $900 of shades being destroyed.

If I had known this I would have just hung up bedsheets instead.

The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center has observed extreme (G5)
geomagnetic conditions Friday afternoon and expects severe (G4)
conditions to continue through the weekend.

A geomagnetic storm of this strength can cause multiple and and widespread issues with various power and communications systems.

Widespread voltage control problems may occur, and some power grid systems may experience component failures, disruption of service, and protective device trips. This could result in blackouts.

GPS and other satellite navigation may be degraded for days.

HF/VHF/UHF radio propagation may be impossible in many areas for one to two days.

I got so annoyed getting yet another email from a Jeep dealership in CO destined for the other Casey Peel that I called them to get it fixed.

That's right. I picked up the phone to talk to someone. It's that level of annoying.

I'm super glad that any of my "this is how I figured something technical out" content I just posted on my blog instead of on StackOverflow.

And while I'm certain they have been / will be scraped to feed AI (regardless of what I do to block crawlers) at least my work isn't being sold out from underneath me by someone I trusted.

Sadly, because of AI spam in search engines, virtually no one will find those blog posts anymore anyway โ˜น๏ธ

Uh, Amazon, these are some very interesting recommendations you have here. The only things I've purchased from you in the past 2 years were a new cable modem, a USB-C docking station, and an aquarium light.

Leaning a little too hard on the "become a himbo" messaging I think.

What's even funnier is that the only thing I use Amazon for is getting Kindle books from our library. So Amazon has tons of information on books that I like and yet is using literally none of them to generate book recommendations.

Maybe because the arm is more compact? Or maybe we see arms uncovered more often than we do legs?

Or because the arm emoji has been around longer so we're just use to it? (Legit, I looked it up - ๐Ÿ’ช was in Unicode 6.0 released in 2010 and ๐Ÿฆต came in Unicode 11.0 in 2018.)

After dragging my feet for (checks calendar) 9 months I finally ordered new reading glasses with my new, slightly higher, prescription.

I've had good luck with two prior pairs* of reading glasses from Zenni so fingers crossed these also work out well (and look cute).

  • it never ceases to amaze me that we have "pairs of glasses" and "pairs of pants" when there's just one of them. English is stupid.

Hey / community, how do you source skillsets outside of your core dev team's wheelhouse, be that volunteer or paid?

@DProofreaders is embarking on a proofreading UI redesign and the dev team doesn't have deep expertise. What we do have are two existing ~20-year-old UIs, a laundry list of requested improvements, and a very opinionated community.

Any suggestions on how you find someone to help you wrangle that?

And like many OSS projects, ours is entirely volunteer run. I'm not against paying someone (people should be paid for their work!) but it's likely to come out of my pocket which aren't leagues deep for this.

@jvschrag Some just-graduated UX folks would likely be a huge help vs going it all on our own (and I do think it could be a good portfolio builder). Part of the problem is I don't know what I don't know -- or rather as a dev I know I don't know enough about this.

I suspect we'd benefit most from someone who could help us look at our current UIs (remember: 2 of them), our most-important feature requirements, and distill that down into some mockups we could discuss with the community and iterate.
