Todays Old Tat
Nearly killed me, managed unload
The BEAST

Ampex Data Products CP 100

It’s history seems a mystery
1” Tape
14 Tracks
Not Video, not Helical Drum
Audio would have been 16 Tracks
Gent was told “used for Data originally”
Bloody heavy & HUGE

Thoughts?

@fedops it’s set to run at 15ips. Would it have needed to run that fast?

avavsystems,
@avavsystems@mastodon.world avatar

@penguin42 @fedops the speed can be changed, which makes sense. 60ips seems remarkably high to me. 1 7/8ips would record for a long time

avavsystems,
@avavsystems@mastodon.world avatar

@penguin42 @fedops I assume it’s dumping multiple data streams at one time

One for my old BGM Buddies today

“I’d like Smooth Pop 10, Chart Hits 36 & Instrumental Piano pls”

Found a few DATs & CDi Audio Discs. DAT is dated March ‘92. Lettered A to H. Therefore DAT Masters for the 8 Bands on CDi Audio, to be pressed up at Nimbus.

Anyone got an M810?

@penguin42

It was a Philips thing
Background Music System 1989
Based on CDi Format
3 Levels
A - 4hr B - 8hr C - 16hr
10 Bit, 36.7 KHz Sampling
Mono, as BGM Systems were.
Commercial Players didn’t have video out, but all CDi Players showed Data IF made to Green Book Spec
They couldn’t be played in a normal CD player. But BGM decks could play Red Book CDs if you knew how

Did proper work yest, I know, right!

Old Group C/D Aerial, so close to Midhurst it still worked
Water logged coax which killed Mast Head Amp. Amp that was unnecessary from the start - but that old scam of fitting it, then an attenuator. Grrrrr

My best side too, honest, it is

Wrapping up the Archiving of the Philips EL 3779 Dictation Carts.
Fiddly little buggers they were.
The Splices had dried out over the years.
Customer didn’t want the cases opened, spent hours fishing out Tape.
They were double sided too.
Saved to SD Card & ready to go

Back Ground Music Format

4, 8 or 16 Hours per Disc
Green Book Standard
Discs could be played in any CDi Player

Old Geek Alert!

TV Sound wasn’t always Stereo, Kids

Occasionally they would Broadcast Stereo on FM Radio & you could “Simulcast” - Recording TV Pic with FM Radio

A dear, late, Buddy recorded Live Aid on Beta
Mono Edge Track is TV Sound
Hi Fi Track is FM

Studio Links are different audio

With Digital, the time delays mean you couldn’t do it now.

Not aware of any other LDs pressed on Coloured Disc
Its very flimsy Poly, feels very soft & lite
Plays fine as you’d expect

Round up of weeks #RetroTech #OldTat finds

Just when you think you’ve seen everything

“Our TV Reception is OK on couple of TVs, but never really worked properly on others. Can you come & look pls”

Sparkie said “I can do that cheap for you” didn’t he?

“Yes”

Daisy chained 3 x 6 dB loss Splitters to get to 6 Outputs. Signal wasn’t much cop before this abomination. Particularly like the long screws to stack em up

image/png
image/png

avavsystems,
@avavsystems@mastodon.world avatar

@philpem by the time Mr Electrician had bought three splitters, a bag of crimp Fs, coax & spent time pissing about, he could bought & installed a half decent Amp couldn’t he.

Just shows how a Sparkies brain works. 240V doesn’t half / quarter when you chop it like that

Out n about today swapping boxes

image/png

avavsystems,
@avavsystems@mastodon.world avatar

@philpem you’re right, but a lot have moved to DVB S2, though still at a shitty bit rate.

Wrapping up Cassette Digitisation Job.
There was a MiniCassette loose in the bag, customer said “dont think there’s anything on it, I was going to chuck it. Can you check?”
Its babys first words & giggles.
Mum is delighted
Baby, who now has Children of his own, is not so delighted
