Il y aura des repos nocturnes dans les cimetières, de la chaleur écrasante, des fausses routes, des abandons précoces, des orages terribles sur des routes à camions, du manque de sommeil. Je leur souhaite de ne pas se faire avaler leur CB au 3e jour, à la fin d'une journée déjà terriblement épuisante.

Mais il y aura peut-être, comme pour moi, un homme solitaire, au milieu de nulle part, qui se tiendra imperturbable sous le soleil et les encouragera d'une phrase, avec leur prénom. Apparition inattendue en Bavière l'année passée.

Bref, l'aventure à vélo a débuté à 22 heures, avec ses nouveaux récits picaresques à venir. #tcrno9

On voit déjà plusieurs options pour rejoindre la Suisse. Esquiver les Ardennes ou venir les lécher au nord malgré le dénivelé. #tcrno9

Par le sud, en rattrapant Charleville peu après la frontière française, c'est enchaînement de vallées fluviales Meuse-Moselle-Thur quasi ininterrompues jusqu'à la Suisse.

Ou couper par le Luxembourg et se faufiler par une minuscule vallée forestière au point le plus étroit des Vosges, qui ouvre la voie d'un go fast le long du Rhin dans la plaine d'Alsace.

Another curiosity: the journey of the cap168.
A train to Brussels and a return to the departure station by bike. But what the fuck? Isn't this a self-supported race? #tcrno9

Well, it is allowed in the race manual: in case of a mechanical incident, it is possible to use public transport to reach a place for a repair. But you have to return to this same point by bike before you can resume the road to the next CP.

In this case, Thomas Jacquelinet had a puncture and a very recalcitrant tubeless tire forced him to make a technical stopover. He even had to go back to a second store near Binche. 8h in the saddle, 9h break since the start of the TCR.

He is not the only one to have had to join Brussels for a technical break. No. 210 also took the train from Namur to visit two cycle shops. But huge mistake and penalty to come: he returned to Namur by train before resuming his journey.

Do you remember James Stewart, cap 12 ? The one who rode far west to reach Geneva lake on a unusual route.

He sadly scratched in Lausanne yesterday.

Two others riders (the legendary Mikko Mäkipää, who finished all the previous editions ; and Frank Peters) did the same choice to reach CP1. Let's see if it pays off.

For those who extensively browse the map, there is two lightweight alternatives by @gjo (https://hda3.dev/tcrno9/) and @wupatz (https://minimap.dedyn.io).

Faster than Followmychallenge, except you'll not have the rider's path.

On the first one, you can even point to a specific rider : add #number to the url.
On the second, hillshade option available, useful in hilly region.
