Our little boy Shortee is in hospital. i would appreciate anyone who is a thinker, feeler or pray-er to send warm wishes + thoughts of noodles, various snacks and proper kidney and pancreas function in his direction. Thank you so much.

@mixolydia Oh, no -- sending vibes, thoughts, and energy your way.

Oh shit, it's 311 y'all. Time for us to get down, down.

@etherdiver a friend posted their performance on NPR Tiny Desk (which...why?) and I did not expect a complete Proustian flashback to one specific commute home from work in 95.

Still trying to process what I saw at the kid's recent jazz combo concert at the high school. There were 8 groups playing. Mostly what I saw was a look of fear and dread. Almost as if the kids had been told that jazz was important as opposed to being told that it's supposed to be fun.

There's probably a OSS metaphor in there somewhere...

bgporter,
@bgporter@hachyderm.io avatar

@dabeaz My undergrad degree was in jazz composition, and when we had kids we moved to a district that had 'the best jazz program in the state' they said. Turns out that program was like military school, drilling them on 5 charts a year. None of them could name any jazz artists except the arrangers of the academic charts they looked at every morning for 90 minutes before school. Horrifying ("but they won the state competition! How wonderful for them..." they'd say to me)

bgporter,
@bgporter@hachyderm.io avatar

@dabeaz Yeah, 100% this -- my main complaints included

  • selecting repertoire for showing the equivalent of athletic prowess. Higher! Louder! Faster!
  • acting as if there was no jazz made after 1963 or so

My son ended up getting way more (IMO) out of playing in the school's "jazz lab" (no auditions, more relaxed, much broader and more appropriate selection of rep). Still blows my mind that I went to one of the top jazz schools in the world, which had 5 big bands, and this high school has 4.

I blogged on "Luigi Russolo, Futurist and Fascist". Russolo is frequently referenced uncritically, even with an electroacoustic music prize awarded in his name, so a few things need to be said..

@yaxu A decade or so ago, the Guggenheim had a large exhibition of Futurist works, and did a good job handling the fascist elements in the accompanying texts and catalog -- that tension made the show mode deeply affecting to me (and prompted some great discussion with my daughter, who would have been early/mid-teens at the time)

@yaxu This is what remains on the website -- http://exhibitions.guggenheim.org/futurism/

@yaxu oh, and back in the 90s, Paul Haeberli (IIRC a developer from SGI) tried to start a "Futurist Programmers" movement -- http://www.graficaobscura.com/future/index.html

Your annual reminder that music tech only defaults to 60 or 120 bpm to make the software easier to debug (as seconds align with beats), and that those bpms often sounds bad

bgporter,
@bgporter@hachyderm.io avatar

@yaxu Meanwhile, in my Music Engraving circles there are (endless) arguments about why specifying tempo to multiple decimal points is dumb.

How many Raspberry Pis are in your home right now?

bgporter,

@evan After I voted 0 I realized that I'm actually 2-5 because of products that contain Pis. Completely spaced on that option because they're not immediately visible.

"It's Time To Kill The Lawn"

Between their voracious thirst for water, the flattening of local biodiversity, and the gnarly pollutants coughed up by mowing ...

... American lawns are the products of an exquisite mania for Order

Time to uproot them

@clive Passing this on to my landscape architect son in case it hasn't come across his radar yet; he avoids residential projects. My neighbors don't understand how he lets me 'neglect' my lawn and they don't understand my explanation that it's intentional...

@jeffjarvis I was in LA last week and came back to things in bloom and it's been miserable. 5 different OTC medicines so I can breathe, but still feel like my head is stuffed with cotton.
