@khalidabuhakmeh I'm trying to have some fun with RustRover but it's hitting an error. Then I wanted to play with and it's hitting the same error:

ld: library 'System' not found
clang: error: linker command failed with exit code 1 (use -v to see invocation)

Have you ever seen this? Writing you up since you've been approaching also as a beginner, so maybe you came across...it seems like something very basic is missing, but I followed the steps, honest 😭

@khalidabuhakmeh I strongly recommend you do not use AI generated responses as a learning/research tool. As @ekuber noted in their reply, this response is quite inaccurate.

Additionally, the whole "tailing expressions" comment is false. A block { ... } is itself an expression, and its return type is either the unit type () or, if there is an expression at the end of the block, the return type of the expression.

Regular reminder that if a compiler error isn't clear, we consider that a bug. File a ticket! Worst case scenario it gets closed as a duplicate. Second worst it takes us a long time to get to them. But I assure you I've read every single open A-diagnostics ticket at least twice.

bigbass,
@bigbass@hachyderm.io avatar

@ekuber Really appreciate how helpful compiler errors are. I only wish the same applied to linking errors and other bizarre issues.

Whether it be "rust-lld: error: ... PC offset is too large", or "rust-lld: error: undefined symbol: core::panicking::panic::he58959b3dd88869f".

Or the newish "error: data-layout for target ... differs from LLVM target's ... default layout" (due to https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/120062).

Using Rust for custom targets is extremely frustrating since the errors rarely make sense.

Just updated my THINGS I WANNA MAKE list.

The sad thing is that all of those videos have semi-complete scripts and storyboards. They just take so long to make. Nothing as long as this current one though.

I swear to tod I'm gonna make 99 episodes before I die (and then stop forever)

@TodePond When you say "on fire", do you mean:

  1. The mastodon servers have caught fire?
  2. You're having a bond fire and mastodon has been placed on top of it?
  3. Mastodon is moving fast enough that it's causing oxygen molecules to vibrate so fast they ignite?
  4. You posted a 🔥 emote that is now spreading throughout the fediverse?

Having business friends is great, but everyone has occasionally busy spells so I am always missing at least some of my favorite people

😭 I wanna send all of them emotional DMs on how much I miss them but that's weird in professional friendships

bigbass,
@bigbass@hachyderm.io avatar

@mariyadelano I feel that it's only weird because society (or just current social norms) says it is. Personally, I don't think we should shy away from providing encouragement and thankfulness to people, regardless whether they are a professional friend or not.

Perhaps especially in a work environment, surely a person would feel better about themselves and their work, if someone reached out and told them how much they matter, both as a professional friend / coworker and as a fellow human being.

bigbass,
@bigbass@hachyderm.io avatar

@mariyadelano Yeah that makes sense. We all have boundaries, or limits that we don't want crossed, either by others or by ourselves. Sometimes though, when we feel ready, pushing ourselves a bit outside our comfort zones, can help us grow as individuals.

There certainly are some kinds of behavior that would be problematic in a professional environment. But empathy and care should be all-around beneficial.
