I always know that my DKMS setup for the platform driver failed when I hear my fans whining after a kernel update. Gotta figure out what’s going wrong some day now.
I’m disabled and no way to get anything from what I have now, which is a omen laptop from 2016 and no matter what ditro, and whatever fixes I try, I can’t get Linux to work with my games through steam without a lot of problems....
I had bought a Thinkpad T580 with an nVidia Geforce MX 150. Not a great card by any means. But it should have been enough to run Doom 2016 at about 30 fps.
But the firmware has been super butchered and this fucking thing throttles so aggressively that it even struggles with Quake 3. It’s because of some Windows-only thermal configuration that defaults to the most conservative values without OS support. The CPU side of things has since been fixed on Linux (which was throttling too much as well) and ironically that made the GPU side worse because CPU and GPU share a heatpipe.
And fucking nVidia is locked behind tons of proprietary garbage and it’s impossible to change anything.
Fortunately I was eventually able to afford a Steam Deck. It’s saved my bedridden disabled ass from insanity.
Yeah, if you have the cloud folder already mounted it should be trivial to re-encode the videos with Handbrake and using the cloud folder as the output directory.
What is your end goal? Do you want to back up your videos with minimal storage costs? Compression won’t help you (because videos are already compressed) unless you can accept data loss through re-encoding. Handbrake (or pure ffmpeg) would be the tool to re-encode lots of files. This could save you space but you may have some loss of quality, depending on the configuration you use and how the original videos are encoded.
If you just want the videos to be available for streaming, tools like Jellyfin or Emby would do the job. They are servers that re-encode your media for streaming on the fly, depending on the client capabilities and your bandwidth settings.

I have never seen anyone express that sentiment except as a joke. But also, it’s a time honoured tradition to hate everything the generation after yours does.
I’ve looked at a lot of other immutable distros and I might just end up using one of those, but I feel like taking on a bit of a challenge and there’s a few things I’m not very keen on with existing solutions (last paragraph is my idea if you want to skip the context)....
BTRFS snapshots are relatively cheap. I have about 10 or 20 or so on my systems. Snapper manages that for me.
Also I’d say that you only want to roll back for catastrophic errors like the system not booting. If you discover after 8 upgrades that a package that was updated on the first upgrade has some critical bug you wouldn’t roll back everything else to fix the issue. You would just downgrade that single package to a known good version.
The original story actually takes place in China. But I’ve never seen an adaption take that into account. There’s probably a Chinese version somewhere that accidentally is more canonically correct.
It’s so awesome that I can let my kid paint with Krita and let her enhance the picture with AI live. She wanted to have an AI picture editor on her phone but I didn’t like the privacy policy. But Krita AI Diffusion came to the rescue....
I’ve been playing through the first one and was curious if anyone has tried running the second one on deck yet? Seems like it will probably not run great due to the graphical fidelity.
