I've been reading Author of My Own Destiny (aka I Became the Wife of the Male Lead) on Tapas and the main couple is nice and all, I guess, but I desperately need someone to write a story about the heroine's adoptive father, Duke Abel. Please. PLEASE. 🙏

I also have a strong suspicion he's 100% the blueprint of the "cold terrifying duke of the north" archetype in villainess webtoons because he's the best version of it that I've seen and I say this as someone who loves Rouche from I'm a True Villainess (aka The Tragedy of the Villainess).

A question for you all:

How much do the performance /visuals aspects of kpop matter to you?

They're important for me; I'd be grief stricken if kpop MVs were to disappear from YouTube.

There's no "right" answer to my question -- I'm just interested to hear how other kpop fans feel.

  1. Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint 1 by singNsong, Umi & Sleepy-C

After years of fandom osmosis, I'm finally beginning this series! This is the webtoon adaptation of the webnovel and I'll be reading the collected print volumes from Ize Press (Yen Press's manhwa/webtoon imprint).

The series focuses on Kim Dokja, a deeply mediocre contract office worker who spends his commutes reading an equally deeply unpopular webnovel called Three Ways to Survive an Apocalypse. He's the only reader & commenter of this 3000+ chapter novel. (It be like that sometimes...) But when he finishes the final chapter, the real world plunges into chaos as the events of the webnovel come to life around him.

Volume 1 covers the setup and the scenario (surviving a mass killing in a subway car). I can see why this series is popular. So far, I think I like it more than Solo Leveling. Probably blasphemy to admit that, but I don't care lol.

And for that, I'd like to share this MV from Kahi, formerly the leader of After School. I'm specifically sharing the choreo MV because it's one of my favs. Kahi has such clean, precise lines as an idol dancer and you can see that here: https://youtu.be/z0otjkbeaeI

Today's cozy season meal is beef stew. I've made this dish on the stove, in a crock pot, and in an instant pot, but I think using the instant pot is my favorite method. You can sear the stew meat and cook the stew itself all in the same pot! Less dishwashing! (I hate washing dishes lol.)

I embraced the cozy vibes of the holiday season and made a broccoli mac and cheese bake for dinner. It was a heavily modified recipe in that I added broccoli in the first place lol along with some condensed cream of mushroom soup and used plant-based shredded cheese.

When I was recovering from surgery and the resulting complications, people were cooking for me and when they weren't, I was subsisting on leftovers. But as my strength and energy returns to their normal baseline levels, I want to get back into the habit of cooking! I love spending time in the kitchen. I'm a fucking kitchen witch!!

blackmagie,

@coffeentacos it adds a smoothness to the texture! But also I was concerned the plant-based cheese would be crumbly and melt weird lol

For today's , I'm gonna do BL recs based on my personal enjoyment and how much I still think about them now.

Honto Yajuu
Description: Police officer x Yakuza, but more of a slice-of-life. It's cute. It's funny. They get together really quickly so there's none of that drawn out misunderstanding. Police officer is a neighborhood policeman who patrols and stuff, yakuza is a softie, cute, and forward with his emotions. This is a comfort read because nothing terrible happens and... it really is just them shoving dog food[1] at everyone. There are many volumes of dog food.
Futekiya link: https://mangaplanet.com/comic/5facb14faa491

Sannin Gurashi
Description: It's told from the pov of the younger brother of a couple. The brothers were from a pretty abusive family. The story is about how they found love and make a new life after leaving their abusive family. It's short, sweet, sad, hopeful, unfortunately not licensed.

  1. A Stepmother's Marchen 1 by Spice&Kitty and Orka

I actually follow this webtoon on Tapas (known as The Fantasie of a Stepmother there), but I wanted the Seven Seas print edition because it's one of my absolute favorite series and the art is stellar. (Also, Orka is one of us! She used to post Haikyu fanart on Tumblr years ago!)

This is a regression series where the heroine dies an egregious death but wakes up 7 years in the past and gets a second chance at life. The basic premise is that the heroine is the much-younger second wife of a marquess. He dies, leaving everything to her - a seriously heavy responsibility when their family is one of the twin pillars supporting the imperial family. And because her stepchildren are only a few years younger than her, their relationship is strained and awkward at best. The heroine, Shuri, regresses to the day of her husband's funeral when she's only 16 years old.

blackmagie,
  1. The Villainess Turns the Hourglass 2 by Sansobee & Antstudio

As the title suggests, this is another villainess regression story. In this one, the heroine was outmaneuvered by her younger stepsister and painted as a villainess & executed by her stepbrother.

Like other stories in this genre, Aria wakes up in the past with a second chance at life but what's interesting is that it's because she receives a magical hourglass from the powers that be that allows her to turn back time.

Interesting backstory: Aria's mother was a prostitute who got pregnant with her. Despite this, she managed to charm a rich count into marrying her. Unlike other stories, she brings Aria with her. Neat undercurrents going on with class there.

Major plot point is that Aria's set out to seduce her stepsister's fiance, but it's clear the true love interest is the crown prince who Aria doesn't realize yet is the crown prince in this volume. They have a great dynamic.

blackmagie,
  1. Not-Sew-Wicked Stepmom 2 by Iru & Mo9Rang

It's villainesses all the time around these parts :gritty: In this one, a children's clothing designer dies and transmigrates into the body of a wicked stepmother. The original story is a Snow White retelling where the stepdaughter becomes the fairest of them all, more or less.

Abigail, the newly transmigrated heroine, adores her cute stepdaughter, but the original Abigail was a terror so fixing her reputation is an uphill battle.

In this volume, the relationship between Abigail and her stepdaughter continues to improve while the one with her husband is...there. I suspect I know what's going on with the husband and his very obvious aversion to being touched by women, but I suppose we'll see how the series handles it.

I love the theme for next month's Yoga with Adriene playlist but I'm still recovering from surgery! Wah, UNFAIR.

It's okay... I found a YouTube channel that has a yoga series for post-surgery recovery and I've been doing it as I can. (Sometimes I walk for 30-40 minutes instead or just plain skip if I'm super active at work.)

I'm just sad because the theme is great and the practices on the playlist are wonderful. :ablobsadpats:

I would like to start reading more manga.

Thinking, slice of life, farming/country, magical/fantasy. Not fan service boobalicious stuff pls.
I loved watching THE MAKANAI on Netflix which was adapted from Kiyo in Kyoto.

What are your recs?

(pls tell me where I can find said manga, one of my main difficulties is FINDING the stuff. It's like, cryptic AF)

Bonus if it's free or could be gotten from a library or something.

See next post for what I've read and enjoyed.

blackmagie,

@MsHearthWitch I rec Frieren! Which is available on the Viz App, possibly from your library depending on how robust their manga catalog is, or (less legally) MangaDex

is actually fine as a pure fantasy genre story. The plot beats feel like a DnD campaign. Party members gain powers just when they'd be useful. Evil amassing far away.

And that is why it fails to classify as "Modern Anime". There's no tropey hook. No cliffhangers between episodes. No ridiculous plot twist. Not that many people seem to care about it. :meowthinking:

Apart from the interesting beginning, there's barely any anime tropes, just regular fantasy ones. No cute elf girl (only a cute halfling girl). No animal people.

Edit: rephrased a bit as it's harsher than what I intended

blackmagie,

@anianimalsmoe the funny thing is that I really liked the first season. I thought it was a solid coming-of-age story in a fantasy setting, especially since it downplayed the isekai element that I don't particularly care for. But this second season has been... Okay. Not bad but just okay.

I was under the impression that the original light novels are on a break but maybe I'm wrong and they restarted with the anime.
