I would like to start reading more manga.

Thinking, slice of life, farming/country, magical/fantasy. Not fan service boobalicious stuff pls.
I loved watching THE MAKANAI on Netflix which was adapted from Kiyo in Kyoto.

What are your recs?

(pls tell me where I can find said manga, one of my main difficulties is FINDING the stuff. It's like, cryptic AF)

Bonus if it's free or could be gotten from a library or something.

See next post for what I've read and enjoyed.

18+ WildSolcte,

@MsHearthWitch Sounds like you'd enjoy Witch Hat Atelier. Cozy witch fantasy. I just picked up the latest volume that's all short stories and recipes from the world.

On that note: Delicious in Dungeon! Great stories about a group of dungeon delvers making their way through - meeting folks and discovering amazing foods along the way.

Also, I'm also struggling to find the comfy slice of life/fantasy stuff. I've actually been having huge success at my library recently - the librarian there has a well-curated collection.

18+ MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@WildSolcte Thank you! There's quite a few recommendations in the replies to the original post if you're looking for more.

blackmagie,

@MsHearthWitch I rec Frieren! Which is available on the Viz App, possibly from your library depending on how robust their manga catalog is, or (less legally) MangaDex

MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@blackmagie Sousou no Frieren, is that the one?

blackmagie,
MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@blackmagie Sweet ty!

naye,
@naye@wandering.shop avatar

@MsHearthWitch Silver Spoon! Hokkaido city kid end up in an agricultural high school, slice of life hijinks ensue. It's by Arakawa Hiromu, who's probably best known for Fullmetal Alchemist. Sadly don't have a legal pay to read link... Content warnings: animal death, as part of the farming. (The manga isn't autobiographical, but Arakawa did grow up on a dairy farm, so she knows what she's writing about.)

MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@naye Ooo that sounds... very much like what I'm looking for!

I watched FMA and enjoyed it (mostly)

ysabet,
@ysabet@wandering.shop avatar

@MsHearthWitch The original FMA anime or FMA: Brotherhood?

@naye

MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@ysabet Umm so the original and then I started watching Brotherhood but didn't finish (I don't remember why)

ysabet,
@ysabet@wandering.shop avatar

@MsHearthWitch Gotcha. I asked mainly because overall, Brotherhood is quite close to the manga, and the original anime is...not.

I love Brotherhood, but the early part is rough. Ep. 1 was mediocre filler (we watched that when it came out and didn't go back to the show for YEARS), and then the pacing is really rushed for the first chunk, while it covered manga material that the original anime had included.

ysabet,
@ysabet@wandering.shop avatar

@MsHearthWitch My caveats for making recs are that I don't really know what's available digitally (but VIZ & Crunchyroll both have a lot), and I'm way out of the loop except for things I've worked on, so my recs are either older or "mine". I'll ^ titles I've worked on so you know which I'm biased about.

Fruits Basket
Fullmetal Alchemist
Yona of the Dawn^
Yotsuba&!
High School Debut (slightly ^)
My Love Story!!^
The Ancient Magus' Bride^
NANA (even though it may never be finished)
Hikaru no Go

MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@ysabet I will check those out! Thank you!

I actually have Yostsuba&! as a physical collection but all in Japanese. It's one of my language learning goals!

And that's so cool you work on manga. I think your bio says you adapt them? What's that like, sounds so fun!

ysabet,
@ysabet@wandering.shop avatar

@MsHearthWitch Yotsuba&! is the only manga I read the second it comes out (although it's safe to say that about a series that only drops a new volume every two or three years).

Adaptation/rewriting is a neat job, yeah. ^_^ Basically I get the "literal" translation and smooth it out into natural-sounding English. (How much work that is varies wildly, of course.)

MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@ysabet Ah fun! It was recommended to me as a good one to start with for learning Japanese. Although it's still waaaay above my level right now.

That sounds like such a fun job! What a neat thing to do :D

@MsHearthWitch Pluto (recently adapted to an anime on Netflix) has some really good Sci-Fi thoughts and questions, though it may be more serious than you're looking for.

Blue Flag (published by Viz in America) is a story about a high school boy who develops a crush on a girl who has a crush on his friend, at least that's where it starts. It then goes on to look at some of the pressures modern day kids might face in high school (at least in Japan). High school drama, but feels grounded.

Generally, if you're looking to read manga, you can find fan transitions on MangaDex.

MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@JowlesMcGee I don't mind serious, I prefer it to screwball comedy that it seems a lot of anime stuff also has.

I will check both of those out, thank you!

Is MangaDex like MangaFire? I've been finding a lot of stuff on there.

jarulf,
@jarulf@mstdn.social avatar

@MsHearthWitch Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, a slice of life, cosy post-apoc manga. It's published in English by Seven Seas, and I think Manga Dex has it.

MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@jarulf wonderful, thank you!

BluRae,

@MsHearthWitch Fruits Basket is the classic, so you've probably already encountered it, but you didn't list it so I figured I'd mention it.

I read it at my local library.

MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@BluRae I haven't heard of it! Legit the only ones I know of are the ones I listed :x

It's so hard to find them and I get all confused.

ysabet,
@ysabet@wandering.shop avatar

@MsHearthWitch Seconding the Fruits Basket rec! It was my primary fandom for something like nine years (and my gateway into the industry--I didn't work on the actual series, but I adapted the fanbooks). It takes a quirky premise that could have been played entirely for comedy and addresses a lot of the actual emotional implications seriously.
@BluRae

MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@ysabet @BluRae Several folks have recommended that one now! I will have to check it out :D

thecalchemist,

@MsHearthWitch hi! You can read a lot of manga on MangaDex. If you don’t mind paying a small monthly fee ($2.99) Viz Media/Shonen Jump has a large library. (They also have a pretty extensive free library and you can use some limited features as well.) If you are looking for print manga, the library is your best bet, then check out your local comic shop! Even if they don’t have it they can probably order it. Barnes and Noble has a well-stocked ‘current’ manga section but they might not be the cheapest or most convenient.

@MsHearthWitch 'Laid-Back Camp' or 'Yuru Camp' is a slice of life anime that I'm enjoying - it also has a manga.

You can read the manga free online here: https://mangafire.to/read/yurucamp.918n/en/volume-1

I'm not sure exactly where you are but WorldCat might be able to help in locating one in a library near you: https://www.worldcat.org

MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@jupitersigh omg just from the image when I opened it up it looks exactly like what I'm looking for.

jupitersigh,
@jupitersigh@wandering.shop avatar

@MsHearthWitch I'm loving it - the anime is the chillest thing. Lots of talk about camping, autumn scenery, and camp cooking. It's on Crunchroll, if you have that.

MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@jupitersigh I don't, although I think it get it free with something else I'm subscribed to?

jupitersigh,
@jupitersigh@wandering.shop avatar

@MsHearthWitch Also, you might have already seen it as it's been around for a long time but Kimi Ni Todoke (From Me To You) is the most lovely slice of life anime (also manga). It's a romance and very sweet.

MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@jupitersigh Trust I have seen nothing except the ones I listed, lmao

jupitersigh,
@jupitersigh@wandering.shop avatar

@MsHearthWitch Ooh then I have to hold out Kimi ni. It is so precious. Like guard with everything precious. Great romantic relationship, great friendships, and a wonderful developing self-relationship.

MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@jupitersigh Ooo nice!

I'd love to find something that has like, Totoro vibes. Living in the country, farming, that sort of Ghibli shit, lol.

jupitersigh,
@jupitersigh@wandering.shop avatar

@MsHearthWitch Hmm okay. I can't think of one off the top of my head, but if I do, I'll let you know.

PS - I'm looking through the list of games you sent me earlier and so many I already love so I'm really interested to try others on the list!

MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@jupitersigh No worries. Ones that focus on cooking would also be excellent.

And yay I'm so glad. I probably should go thru and update my list as there's been a few new games. Namely Harvest Moon Winds of Anthos which has been so chill and fun to play.

@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@jupitersigh OMG THAT WEBSITE HAS KIYO IN KYOTO!!! AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH

jupitersigh,
@jupitersigh@wandering.shop avatar

@MsHearthWitch Yay! 😁

MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@jupitersigh It's the manga that the Makanai was based off and I really wanted to read it more. But googling only led me to Japanese, physical versions. Which also were like $250 for the series and my Japanese isn't anywhere nearly good enough..
