I could say so much about this seminal album, but you'd be better off actually listening to it.

Drinking Texas Leaguer 2 Hopper India Pale Ale. It's OK, but not great. Texas does some IPAs that I prefer, like Axis from Blanco.

The use of UK crown dependencies, and overseas territories for tax avoidance, tax evasion, and money laundering must be ended.

To plead "If we don't do it, somebody else will" is to adopt the rhetoric of pimps and pushers.

I would not have guessed that Turkey has the highest per capita tea consumption, although I would have put them in the top ten.

I'm also surprised to see Chile in the top ten, ahead of Egypt and Japan.

In a way its refreshing to see no effort being made to conceal the antisemitism.

The call for police protection for "anti-Jewish students" should be filed alongside the the Columbia occupiers' plea for the university to provide food supplies as "humanitarian aid" . Had such catering been provided, I'm sure there would have been complaints about insufficient menu options and the lack of assurance that the coffee was shade grown....

Lou Harrison -- In Honor of the Divine Mr. Handel

🧵 1/2
There I was, enjoying what seemed to me to be an interesting fusion of East and West...

🧵 2/2
...but then I came across this paper, which concludes on this note:

>> I argue that this is indeed the
case with Harrison’s music for Western instruments with gamelan; although he
presents the gamelan-derived materials in a way that seems to grant them equity
with his own Western compositional processes, it strikes me as naïve to suppose
that they represent only the “transcultural warmth and understanding” with
which Harrison and his fans imbue them. I contend that much of what appeals
to Western audiences in Harrison’s pieces, in fact, lies precisely in the way they
seem to meet other musical worlds more than halfway while covertly asserting
Western musical sensibilities, making the music comfortably (again, in Jonathan
Bernard’s words) “exotic and familiar at the same time”. <<

@zdl

yes, I think you are right about that in general , although I'm not sure* whether that applies to Lou Harrison's works.

*Genuine expression of uncertainty, as opposed to polite expression of disagreement.

Anyway, I'm think about what you've said just now in connection with the collection of "music that doesn't suck'" YouTubes that you recently sent me. I was interested to see that as well as some Chinese music such as the Black Kirin song that uses the same musical language that westerners employ, you also included Chinese music that most westerners (including this one!) find challenging in its unfamiliarity - for example, the Kunqu opera extract.

Did you listen to this latter kind of music when you were growing up? Or have you only come to understand and appreciate it since you moved to China?

jemmesedi,
@jemmesedi@c.im avatar

@zdl

By the way, you wondered whether there was common theme in your selections.

I am no expert on this kind of classification, but your choices did seem united by a certain spikiness, with a quite strong rockist/antipop current running through it. Even the Chinese selections were notable for being a million miles away**
from the global pop sound that is the background music in shopping malls and so on. I was also interested to see British artists well represented.

But this will not be done by revenge. Revenge only leads to more suffering of those, who already suffer the most.

The hatred needs to be stopped. The call for revenge because of dead children.

This conflict will not stop as long as the bodies of dead children get dragged around for photos. And people share and spread those.
