Been hot AF here lately. Like over 30C.

Tenzaru soba is perfect when it's like this. I got some tempura shrimp that's frozen and I can pop in the air fryer, which is perfection.

@consumablejoy I know! My only complaint is that the shrimp they used are like, teeny. Probably because it is shrimp, and not prawn which I think is more normally used.

It's better than a lot of delivery tempura I've had (prolly cuz it gets soggy en route). And at $20 for 2lbs of it... I'm not complaining, honestly.

10 min the air fryer at 400 and it's nice and crisp, not greasy at all.

  • PB and banana toast (can just be bread if toasting is more effort than desired)
  • cereal
  • cream cheese and smoked salmon on a bagel

Hands off or very low spoon:

  • salmon in air fryer with rice
  • fried egg on bread
  • chx caesar (chicken nuggies in air fryer, tossed with franks buffalo, in a bowl of romaine with caesar dressing)
  • marinara on a piece of naan/bread with cheese in the toaster oven (I'll add ham and/or banana peppers if I'm feeling fancy)

Like, I get if you had a great mum and certainly, celebrate her. But being blasted in the face by literally every org telling me how mum's the only one I can truly rely on. Mums love you best, blah blah blah...

When my own mother was emotionally abusive and allowed so much physical abuse at the hands of my father...

To celebrate new job, new chapter, new me... I splurged on a set of All-Clad D3 pots and pans.

Not a bunch, just your basics, as I also frequently use cast iron. But teen dislikes cast iron (even the enamel pots) and I will admit they're not always best suited to a task.

I am so excited. Literally the snow white meme on the window waiting on them to get here.

I've lusted after an all-clad set for years. Big BIFL energy.

And now my wallet is screaming stop, lol.

For stainless the trick is to let it heat up, then add oil, let that heat, then use it.

@dyani Hmmm Mostly for stainless I use my wok. Otherwise I tend to use the stainless steel stuff for like, soups or pasta, maybe a curry.

For my pad thai, which is a multi-step thing. It's the same. Heat the pan on Med, add oil (generously) til oil shimmers, then cook as normal.

I think the trick is the heat, not too high, but high enough. Letting things sear a bit before stirring them so they release from the edge.

There's definitely a trick to it that's all about the temp.

Two of my friends lent me a portable AC they can't use in their current apartment, and I might cry. Holy fuck what a difference it makes in my office.

@lydiaschoch It is, it has made such a huge difference this evening as the temps have climbed to over 30C outside. My office has a fairly large south-facing window and the last few days it has been very very warm in here.

Thankfully the rest of the house seems to stay pretty cool, which is nice.

Tips for staying in a house with someone who is covid positive? I am still negative but I am also still a close contact. Sigh. I really don't want to get this if I can! We're masking and have an air purifier.

@minxdragon I've done it twice (two dif ppl /sigh) and dodged covid twice. My person has also done it in a different house twice.

The covid+ person kept in their room with a good air purifier next to them. I handled the rest of the house, would make food, leave it on a tray outside their door and they'd mask up and pick it up.

I masked everywhere except my office and bedroom, where I was also running good air purifiers.

My person did the same in their house.

Worked for us.

Been dealing with a lot of anxiety the last few days. Probably because in general, life has been going well. And my dumbass brain starts to get worried when that happens, waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Also, moving is fucking expensive and I have a lot of finance related trauma.

In my efforts to deal with the weasels in my brain, I'm gonna go do some cleaning/organizing. Rather than sit here and stew I will move my body and hope that helps.

The commission for Paul’s first is all done, save a thread trim and wash. My only regret is that I haven’t a mannequin on which to display it for photos.

I order some Products from the United States.

The cost is $88 CAD.

There's a fixed international shipping cost of $48 CAD. Frustrating, but that is what the shipper has, so okay.

A couple days later, I get an email from UPS asking to pay the import duty fee. The import fee is $51 CAD.

That is more than half the cost of the product itself. I'm overall paying more for shipping+import fees than for the product.

When I moved here I assumed I could buy stuff from USA cheap because of NAFTA :(

@mcc UPS broker fees and that whole process is RIDICULOUS.

I tend to avoid companies that ship to Canada with UPS. FedEx and DHL have been far more reasonable in my personal experience.

And idk if you live near the border at all, but paying for a US postal box has saved me a lot of money. $90/yr and they will sign for packages (so it's not a PO box). I go over and pick them up and just pay duty at the crossing.
