Looks like they're at it again, which calls for a song...
(original version by @VeryBadLlama)

🎵
I’m a bitch
I’m an orca
Sinkin’ yachts
Off Majorca
I’m a mammal
I’m a whale
Capsize you with my tail
Sink your boats
Eat the rich
Or else I’ll feed ya to the fish
And then I’ll teach the other whales to do the same

Thought inspired by nothing in particular: 2018 bmac can't even imagine 2023 bmac from where he is.

That's just 5 years, and I'm old, so that's just 10% of my life. I can't fathom what it must be like for younger folks.

Maybe be kind to yourself today. For the sake of your 2018 self, who has no idea what's coming.

I got the Lego UCS X-wing for my birthday, and just now finished it. This is the third time Lego has done the X-wing at this scale, and I was a bit nervous it would be too similar to the 2013 version that I already have. (I never got the 2000 release.)

I was wrong; the new set is entirely different in nearly every respect. It captures the odd hexagonal shape of the body, which has never been done in Lego. And the engine intakes are HUGE, maybe even a bit too big, but closer to "right."

I'm back from Australia, after a full day-plus of traveling that I referred to as "the infinite Wednesday."

The trans-Pacific leg wasn't too bad: long, of course, but I knew that going in. The LAX -> ATL leg was bad, because my brain entered the state where I was so exhausted I couldn't focus on even a YouTube video, but I also couldn't fall asleep.

We were stuck in ATL for a few hours because of weather, but eventually made it back here.

What "they" said about the generations, over time:

1992:
Boomers: In charge of everything.
Gen X: Lazy slackers (they have a movie about it!)

2010:
Boomers: Still in charge of everything.
Gen X: Around here somewhere, I think.
Millennials: Lazy and over-educated.

Now:
Boomers: Still in charge.
Millennials: Kinda got their act together.
Gen Z: Lazy and entitled.
(Gen X? Never heard of them.)

Is anyone organizing LayoffConf yet? An online conference for people hit by tech layoffs in which they can discuss what happened, how it happened, what's happened since, and the sizes of the bonuses the execs who hired them and then fired them awarded themselves?

bmac,
@bmac@jawns.club avatar

@gvwilson Based on recent experience, every conf is LayoffConf to some degree.

When starting at a new employer, sometimes you get thrown in the deep end, and sometimes you have to fill the pool yourself.

If you want to find out how many devices you own that still need USB micro connectors to charge, instead of USB-C, have a thorough clean-out of your "loose cables" box.

Within a week, you'll find USB-micro devices everywhere.

A few days ago, I got a couple of cards in the mail. Our address, but the names are not people who live here. Given the envelopes, I'm guessing they're birthday or congratulatory cards of some kind, probably sent by a family member.

I wrote "Return to sender. No one here by this name" on both of them, and put them back in the mailbox. They went away.

Today, they came back again. The note I wrote is still there. No further information. Now what?

Microsoft has announced that they're ceasing production of mice and keyboards. Although I don't use one currently, I love the Microsoft Natural Keyboard 4000.

I thought maybe I should pick up 3 or 4 and store them in a closet.

Of course, the speculators got there first. Average price on Amazon is now $400.

@aphistic Although I'm risking my geek cred to say so, I've never cared much about mechanical keyboards. I remember the satisfying thunk of an IBM101, but I don't long for it.

Which is good, because that saves me a bunch of money.

My Wordle streak ended today at around 220. (I got a new phone in the middle, so I don't know the exact count.) Hopefully that's not an indication of how the rest of my day will go.
