Am I the Australian with a reputation for answering things now? Huh.

Good to know we can instruct Australians to not answer things now.

Listening to a podcast with Serj Tankian and people getting pissed that he's political. I guess those folks never listened to prison song or the entire albums, just the hits?

chrisjrn,

@wuest I'm OK, Vantaa seemed nice, trying hard to not think about people who complain about music being "political". I hope you're OK too!

This is a remarkable graph.

You might have heard that "EV sales are slumping", "people are starting to avoid EVs", etc.

That's not what's happening.

What's happening is "Tesla is cratering so hard that it's skewing the aggregate market data."

chrisjrn,
@chrisjrn@social.coop avatar

@mhoye and that explains Tesla finally opening up NACS to other manufacturers: they're going to turn into a patent licencing company and nothing more

I heard many folks at PyCon — including a few very prominent ones who shall remain nameless to protect the guilty! — claiming that “black text on a white background” is uniformly and obviously the superior accessibility choice for conference presentations, for various reasons. This is, at the very least, debatable, and I think it would not be too spicy of a take to say it is straightforwardly incorrect. Some evidence follows: 🧵

chrisjrn,
@chrisjrn@social.coop avatar

@hynek @glyph invariably size and contrast matters more. I've found rooms with enough directional light to turn black-on-white into low contrast too.

chrisjrn,
@chrisjrn@social.coop avatar

@hynek @glyph also, in a room with poor stage lighting, dark-on-light makes the presenter difficult to see, which completely defeats the purpose of having a speaker in the room.

(Nuance!)

chrisjrn,
@chrisjrn@social.coop avatar

@glyph @hynek

For me as a speaker, if the room is poorly lit and my slides are dark-on-white, it causes me eye strain if I glance at a mostly-bright screen and then try to make eye contact with anyone in the audience (e.g. to check to see if a joke landed, or if people are following an example). That absolutely affects my performance as a speaker.

If the room is well-lit, that's less of a problem. Either way, I ensure I have a maximal contrast ratio for my slides.

@chrisjrn@social.coop avatar

@glyph
Would it be useful for PyCon US to provide a "room guide" to speakers before the event? I'm thinking:

  • in-situ photos, if at all possible (if not, sufficiently-illustrative photos)
  • Descriptions of the decor and lighting
  • Sizes of the screen and the room
  • Projector specs

If that seems like a useful tool for speakers, I'd be very willing to push for it and to do the small amount of work it would take to make it happen.

(minor quibble I forgot to include: a survey including “oi what was ur COVID test result a week after attending?!” should probably be scheduled to email out at least one week after the main conf ends, not only a few days 🫠)

Man, every since my visit to Pittsburgh I've been low key into funiculars, these twin cable cars on hill sides where one is the counterweight for the other.

I never thought of myself as a "guy on the spectrum who is into trains" but I guess I never found the right kind of train.

The most frustrating part of the mask discussion to me is how it’s 100% focused on “your discomfort” vs “other ppl’s health”.

The MAJOR exclusionary nature of masks is inverted, tho! Of course are there ppl who don’t want to wear one for comfort or can’t for medical reasons. But the majority I talked to would be happy to wear one but wished if OTHERS didn’t wear one, so they could understand them (better, or at all). (1/4)

chrisjrn,
@chrisjrn@social.coop avatar

@hynek
For what it's worth, there was ventilation monitoring in all the rooms, so that is indeed a discussion that can be had.

chrisjrn,
@chrisjrn@social.coop avatar

@bouncing
That's why the PSF has a board committee for PyCon that listens to the community, and you can inform who's on it by voting in the board election. Even with a lot of voices, there's a hard discussion to be had to make sure whatever policy we land on next year is right for the community.
@hynek

chrisjrn,
@chrisjrn@social.coop avatar

@hynek
This is where I point out the 2023 health and safety policy https://2023.northbaypython.org/health-and-safety-policy and the 2024 one https://2024.northbaypython.org/health-and-safety-policy

Our venue was so well ventilated that you couldn't tell when people were in the room from air quality graphs alone, so we dropped the requirement. We added other accommodations to compensate: a masked/distanced audience section, speakers can state whether I (the mc) should mask around them on stage, amongst others.

Nuance isn't tooo hard if you try.

chrisjrn, (edited )
@chrisjrn@social.coop avatar

@bouncing
On the other hand, the foundation and its directors (I'm one of 12) hold liability for the conference, and so we always have to act with that in mind.

What's wanted by the "majority" won't always align with what's in the best interest of the Foundation, so a "simple" vote wouldn't get rid of the need for deep and well-considered discussion.

You may not have the spoons to attend an event.

You may not realise there's something you can do right now to help your community be more accessible to others.

You may want to spread word of a cool event to your followers. Which is awesome.

I'm always going to check out what you're interested in, mutuals.

Although I'd like a small favour if you can. Please can you check if they have a public health policy?

If they don't could you ask them? Please?

Because I want to boost.

chrisjrn,

Actually, mostly bigger rooms than the fire code required, with high ceilings and good ventilation. Someone there was sick, but I haven't heard of a large number of people also getting sick.

@blaise @onepict Glad to hear it. I loved the venue too, and was so glad we got to finally see it, after cancelling our 2020-2021 events there.
