I feel a lot of pressure some days to start producing "reels" on Instagram, because it's sort of expected, and I even got feedback from a recent potential advertiser that they think our low IG traffic / likes may mean it's not a good fit for them to advertise on CoffeeGeek.

But I don't think I'm going to succumb to the algorithm.

Literally the only benefit I see for our website with IG and getting our likes and subscribes up, is that it will convince CERTAIN potential advertisers to support our website.

But I'm starting to think... do I really want their support? Do I really have to completely become a slave to the IG / Tiktok algorithms just to get these companies to give us $200 a month in ad revenue?

@coffeegeek my guess is it's all demographics. I don't have many peers on either of these platforms. But my kids friends all are. So which audience is more important to CG? Not convinced that these marketers are serving their brands well.

@clive my rambling take on this is it will be transitory. Maybe the next 5 years or so while the rate of charge increases and standardizes. To take your laptop example, and what I have noticed in other consumer electronics as a trend, is to increase the charging rate dramatically to allow for smaller batteries and cheaper devices. It's a common strategy for the 5min from 20% to 80% marketing bleeps. My x250 Thinkpad had more battery life than my x1 carbon from this year and I miss it.

Somebody convinced Jagmeet he's got a chance in a general election.

He doesn't

And he'll lose his position as a power broker in a minority coalition.

The NDP needs a backroom knife fighter and what they've got are boot lickers and bleeding hearts.

@mike I like jagmeet. He used to be my MP. I don't understand the pharmacare as the hill to die on. I wish they would pick something else.

So this happened. It's yummy. Very flavourful. It's pretty dry. Fair amount of bitterness for a brown although nothing close to IPA territory. Lots of chocolate going on. Some earthy bits too. Good for the season

I came across another phrase with a fun origin this weekend: "over the transom."

A transom is cross-beam, such as the beam at the top of a door.

Here's the quotation from an editor at "Atlantic Monthly" that Etymonline has for the origin:

"Mr. Weeks once said that some very interesting material comes from writers who, too shy to walk in and talk to the editor, just toss their manuscripts over the transom and run."

https://www.etymonline.com/word/transom#etymonline_v_16895

@grammargirl transom is commonly used to refer to the back end of a boat as well.

When it comes to carbon, I don't understand why we don't pick the low hanging fruit. Tax big engines. You want recreational horsepower (and I'm a fan) you have to pay. You want an F250 grocery getter, you have to pay. And make it punitive. It's too cheap right now to recklessly burn fuel.

brianinbc,
@brianinbc@thecanadian.social avatar

@mike sure let's try it. It's likely not as "efficient" as a carbon tax but if it gets traction with groups presently opposed to a carbon price then why not.

brianinbc,

@tomw maybe. Access to the ocean is ubiquitous. Access to space is controlled. We can agree there will be problems.
