This month's editorial looks at the possible ethics issues that could come with introducing a reliable detector to the filtering process of a submissions system. Curious what people think.

@clarkesworld Great read. Do I understand correctly that by "It's trained on the text generated by systems involved in theft," you means the text is generated by ChatGPT or some tool like it?

My jaw dropped.

I was sitting there with my mouth open after watching this Apple ad, and I can't remember something like that ever physically happening to me before. Just slow, building horror.

@dxzdb Thanks! Super interesting that they say the ad was created in house.

Any "Dune" fans here?

Tomorrow I'm interviewing big-time audiobook narrator Scott Brick, who narrates the "Dune" books, and Kevin J. Anderson who has written many "Dune" books.

Do you have any questions you'd like me to ask them (I'm especially interested in questions about the language of "Dune").

@grammargirl@zirk.us avatar

@EJGilbert Will do. Thanks!

@ianRobinson Thanks!

@SebastianBlanco Wow, that's a great tidbit and question! I have it in my notes to ask now. Thanks.

grammargirl,
@grammargirl@zirk.us avatar

@croyle Interesting! I'll ask.

grammargirl,
@grammargirl@zirk.us avatar

@AccordionBruce I'll ask him about this (but the short answer is yes.) 😀

grammargirl,
@grammargirl@zirk.us avatar

@SebastianBlanco I passed the questions on to Scott and Kevin a bit ago, and Kevin says this isn't true. It's a bummer because it could have led to an interesting discussion, but good to know.

I get to do one of my favorite things today — reading a bunch of reference books to find fun facts to share!

Who’s afraid of the jukebox?

The coin-op industry was incredibly reluctant to accept the term “juke box” when it first took root in the 1940s.

This was mostly due to the first part of that word – let’s have a little etymological discussion.

Congratulations to Ken Doctor and the team at Lookout Santa Cruz for recognition of their pathbreaking journalism. He's investing in news while the competition (hedge fund Alden) is not. And it shows. Bravo. https://lookout.co/lookout-santa-cruz-wins-pulitzer-prize-for-breaking-news-reporting/

@grammargirl is there any way at all I can listen to your podcast without ads? Or at least without inserted targeted ads?

grammargirl,
@grammargirl@zirk.us avatar

@carbis We're working on it! I hope to have an option for people in a month or so. (If it were up to me alone, you'd already have it.)

Old English had some beautiful and poetic compound words such as "heaven candle" for "sun."

Hana Videen of @OEWordhord and I talked about those and more in our interview about her new book about words for animals in medieval times, "The Deorhord."

I'm reviewing the video for Thursday's interview show with Eli Burnstein (another good one!), and it occurred to me that all these hours of watching video of myself are some kind of therapy.

I use to hate watching video of myself, but now I'm just like, this is what I look like, this is my personality, these are my weird mannerisms, and I'm OK with it.

What? In Old English times, people thought whales were evil? 🐳

Hana Videen of @OEWordhord explains the folklore behind this surprising belief and more in the latest Grammar Girl podcast. I loved all the fascinating little tidbits in this episode!

@AccordionBruce @OEWordhord Amazing! I took a class in college that touched a bit on the apocrypha, and the stories like that were wild. I remember a lot of killing-with-lightning kinds of events. My professor would hold out her hands, wiggle her fingers, and say "bzzt."

Does your inner "grammando" ever get the best of you? It happens to us all. 🤣

Hear more of Anne Curzan's delightful stories in this week's Grammar Girl podcast. We also talked about why Benjamin Franklin hated the word "colonize" and how having a laser focus on language led to Anne accidentally (and hilariously) asking her students an inappropriate question.

If you hear someone say, “My car needs warshed,” you know you’re in the Midland dialect territory.

@jsit Interesting. That one sounds standard to me. I'd say "or anything like that."
