This is anecdotal but I don't think I've run a high-end Windows game yet on Linux/Proton that didn't run better than it did on Windows. It's kind of silly.

@floooh @pervognsen I'm sure they are working hard on DX12.... Adding "AI".

I'm not exaggerating when I say I think https://endeavouros.com/ probably has the best OS installer ever. Obviously I haven't tried every installer for every OS, but I don't know what could beat a ~6 minute total time from Boot from USB -> Choose settings (lang/kb layout/timezone/partitions/desktop environment) -> Wipe Disk + rank mirrors + download and install all base packages -> reboot into OS.

@anteru Huh, surprising that Windows is that fast, but I guess the benefit is that you don't have to spend time turning off ads and AI and whatever other shenanigans Windows has these days as well as adding basic functionality like working file search etc.

Hearing that Recall is exclusive to Copilot+ machines with NPUs is a an extremely good reason to never buy a Copilot+ machine with NPU

ca1ne,
@ca1ne@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@sinbad @lritter I think these days it's a lot better, of course heavily dependent on the distro you choose. I think there would probably be a few that fit the "windows but without the bullshit" bill.

ca1ne,
@ca1ne@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@sinbad @lritter also I remember filing a bug on UE like 5 years ago because the tarball with the compiler toolchain etc they use to build UE on Linux included several hundred MIB of duplicate binaries because they couldn't store symlinks in P4 and just materialized the links instead. Closed as won't be fixed. 😭

@gabrielesvelto Yah, I had just dropped caches before running this to give a more fair comparison.

> With Recall, locating files in a large download pileup or revisiting your browser history is easy. You can give commands to Recall in natural language, eliminating the need to type precise commands.

"We suck at UX so we'll need to record everything and run on a 40+ TOPS CPU to be able to provide even the most basic functionality. Do you like this, is this good?"

I'm sorry, but AI is mostly just doing simple things, incredibly inefficiently, in the most creepy way.

ca1ne,
@ca1ne@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@pervognsen Yah...it's kind of funny since doing file searching or program search + execute on linux works as fast and as well as I want it to, something achievable on Windows...if they cared to. And now that they have the AI magic dust I guess they want to sprinkle it everywhere rather than...just doing the basic work. Really sad.

  1. Ok, can't use Linux, then I can use Parsec to connect to the windows pcs in the office and use those, great.
  2. Parsec only has a deb file for Linux. I don't use a debian based distro. It's annoying but it's actually fine because I can just extract the package with dpkg, and the deb literally just has a single exe with some desktop fluff, and I apparently already have all required packages installed so running the binary works fine, great.

Does Musk send thugs to pummel writers who write "on Twitter" instead of "on X, formerly Twitter" or something? Like, everyone knows what Twitter is...just say Twitter, no one but Musk cares about X. Plus it maybe helps their word count.

I usually dev on my home machine which runs Fedora, and literally ever time I use my laptop running PopOS it's a jarring experience due to how outdated apt packages are. For example, I need to use --set-upstream when pushing a new branch because apt has git 2.34, which is...2 years old. Might have to just change apt to use unstable packages, but, ugh.

The tragedy of Europe is every restaurant with an outdoor patio is the exclusive domain of smokers.

There is a lot to love about this place, but the smoking everywhere is a turd in the punchbowl.

@Migueldeicaza https://apnews.com/article/smoking-cigarettes-snus-sweden-7e3744800a4714bdee4bcb1736983586 Sweden is much better than most, but still have the occasional smoker making the day worse for all the people in their radius.
