We have a terrible old fashioned java-based billing system at work. It works fine but extending it in any way is very tricky. It is at least open source so debugging or extending it is easier than it might otherwise be, but still very painful.

But, I weirdly quite enjoy working on it. It's a real challenge and frustrating but that means it's very satisfying when I figure it out. But boy, am I glad the rest of our stack is modern, well written and in nicer languages :)

Occasionally my brain remembers a recommendation @johnl 's wrote of @rahoulb and it never fails to amuse me. (It's also completely true.)

As silly as it would be to do, I am regularly tempted by the idea of long distance day trips, using direct flights.

Eg. Getting a flight to New York that lands at 7am and getting the 11pm flight home.

Not for practicality or anything, just because it’s doable.

The one direct flight to Australia from the UK isn’t timed well for this because QF10 lands at 1300 and QF9 departs at 1845, only giving you maybe 3 useful hours in Perth. (After 16.5hr and £1500). Worst of all you’ll be in Perth :p

I ALWAYS sign off my emails (both personal and professional) with this:

For a while, I worried it was unprofessional but then thought, who cares, typing the smiley makes me smile and it's who I am - a generally chipper, not very serious person.

It's habit now, it's what my fingers do automatically, so if I don't include a smiley, it's a conscious act - my personal little subtle 'fuck you'.

I just sent my first smiley-less email in months/years. I hope that guy sensed the fury!
