We have a terrible old fashioned java-based billing system at work. It works fine but extending it in any way is very tricky. It is at least open source so debugging or extending it is easier than it might otherwise be, but still very painful.

But, I weirdly quite enjoy working on it. It's a real challenge and frustrating but that means it's very satisfying when I figure it out. But boy, am I glad the rest of our stack is modern, well written and in nicer languages :)

johnl,
@johnl@mastodon.social avatar

@caius yeah. I think it might be the worst technical decision I've ever made, but it's easy to forget what the alternatives were at the time. At least I ensured it was under a free software license so we've been able to keep it running ourselves. As shit as it is, it just keeps on going pretty much flawlessly.

Anyone have experience running an server on ?

I'm not finding anything recent: a four-year-old Docker image, a six-year-old blog post,…

johnl,
@johnl@mastodon.social avatar

@PerformantData yes, we replaced in-cluster ceph with in-cluster NFS to simplify things and it's been great. The project lead on it is away this week but I'll ask him to write up a blog post when he's back.

Ban emoji. I've had enough of them. Does 🫣 mean "I'm embarrassed that I can't remember" or "we have made a bad mistake"? Why the fuck should I have to wonder? Words are already unclear enough without adding silly pictures. We invented writing for a good reason and you people are taking us backwards by millennia.

We happen to have travelled out to very dark rural Wales for a weekend in the van just as the amazing aurora borealis light show is on. Easily visible to the naked eye. Pretty much the whole sky. First time seeing it in my life and can't have asked for a better setup! Saved us a trip to Iceland too! ;)

johnl,
@johnl@mastodon.social avatar

@wj yeah Conwy. Been glorious weather! you there on your boat? did you catch the aurora?

This is more like it.
Even with washing machine and tumble drier we still net exported yesterday.

@jamesholden @revk we're away in the van. Got a whopping 310Wh from our panel today. We used it to run the tiny fridge. The rest I might send up to the grid from the battery when we get home.

It's got just about warm enough to start hanging out in the barn so I'm back on with the pianola restoration! Just cleaning keys but I'll be tuning it soon!

Bonus photo of Kaufman, mid-blep, who also turns up when we're doing a jigsaw but is a much calmer presence and mostly spectates.

@johnl@mastodon.social avatar

Oh also, so why didn't anyone tell me doing jigsaw puzzles is immensely satisfying and relaxing!

johnl,
@johnl@mastodon.social avatar

@henrik that looks mad. We started out with a couple of easier 1000 piece simple illustrations to ease me in, but we're now doing a 2000 piece map of Europe and I'm kind of map blind so it's a little torturous.

We just listen to whatever old random play lists - but it's the most music we've been listened to for ages! Been great. I like the idea of a sound track per puzzle though, nice.

Trying to do a jigsaw puzzle but can't figure out where this big black hairy piece goes.

johnl,

seriously though, Hickory absolutely will not leave us alone once he notices we're doing a jigsaw. I think he's jealous of it!

@tamonten aww lovely. Kaufman helping here today.

But now I think we need a hashtag for cats "helping" with jigsaws. jigpaws? jigaww?

johnl,
@johnl@mastodon.social avatar

@tamonten oh no! Weirdly ours don't seem interested unless we're actually doing the jigsaw!

Oh and me and @louisa_ decided that it's ok to go out smelling of petrol but probably not to go out with soil in your hair. Or at least not both. So I had a shower.

johnl,
@johnl@mastodon.social avatar

I suppose another way of looking at this is: go out with soil in your hair and smelling of petrol if you want to make friends who do things that result in soil in their hair and them smelling of petrol.

Today I investigated an AWS ECS problem, worked on a Kubernetes cluster, strimmed the grass, weeded a raised bed and went to an open mic night. Keeping containing those multitudes!

Be like Latvia where traffic offences results in your car going to war against Putin.

One thing I find odd about privatisation vs nationalisation is how strongly some people think about it, as if services are magically better when delivered by the private or public sector, and moving from one to the other will fix / ruin everything.

IMO, it's the size of organisation that matters more - large orgs are often badly run regardless of ownership (which is why I'd be cautious about working full time for one again).

johnl,
@johnl@mastodon.social avatar

@pwaring if true, then public services run by organisations that are expected to be large should just be nationalised - what justification can there be for shareholders to take a cut?

It's quite alarming to see people whose blogs I have followed for 15-20 years (who are about the same age as me) suddenly turn into reactionary gammon.

I am 50 this year.

Am I about to become a massive knobhead?

johnl,
@johnl@mastodon.social avatar

@rahoulb I've seen a few (minor) signs of gammonery from friends and worried the same!
