One interesting thing: American private pilots are trained in night VFR as a basic requirement, so any American private pilot can fly at night under VFR rules. In other countries, it either requires additional training or they do not allow VFR at night at all and so to fly at night you must be instrument rated.

@captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works avatar

I have not experienced what you are talking about; “baggy clothes with graphic tees” describes millennial fashions anyway. I don’t perceive millennials as being particularly negative toward Gen Z, for my part I think the kids are gonna be okay.

Are you from some hyperconservative area, like is the mayor also the town pastor and the county judge?

All told I paid about $5,000 for my private pilot certificate in the early 2000s, though everything is more expensive and the US dollar is cheaper now. Since you used Euro, I wouldn’t be surprised if it is cheaper in America; we get a lot of commercial pilot students from around the world at places like ERAU.

Becoming a private pilot is a stunningly terrible financial decision.

That “dinky Cessna?” I want you to imagine an 80’s Honda Accord that costs as much as a Lamborghini to buy and maintain, and that’s on top of the $8,000 or so you’ll put into training.

A better financial decision would be to buy a brand new Lexus every time you go out of town.

Here you are advocating for the death of people because they purchased a vehicle.

No; I’m expressing the same sentiment that I express for motorcycle riders that refuse to wear a helmet. I really, genuinely don’t care if they beat their brains out on the front bumper of a Hyundai, but I don’t think they get to force a Hyundai driver to hose brains off their car.

Teslas are death traps. Their owners can make that choice for themselves but I don’t think they get to make it for others, which is what they try to do every time they turn on that self-driving feature.

As a small time backyard gardener I can say from experience that 4 plants made more cherry tomatoes than I could reasonably eat. I was giving ziplock bags of cherry tomatoes away to people at work for a couple months. They probably did produce a year’s worth of cherry tomatoes, but they don’t refrigerate or freeze particularly well and they’re not a great choice for making tomato sauce because of their liquid/pulp/skin ratio.

Similarly I’ve found that I can grow a year’s supply of red pepper flakes with a whopping two cayenne plants. The rate at which I consume red pepper flakes, I’m about out by the time this year’s peppers start ripening.

I’m able, in my tiny little garden, to grow more of single kinds of foods than I can reasonably eat. I cannot grow enough to sustain my entire diet; I’d need more land than I own to grow grain.

You know, I think I agree with the spirit of that assertion but not the letter of that assertion.

There are people who are kind of at their limit knowing that on your phone there’s a Facebook app, but you have to use your browser and go to the website on a computer. These folks will hear dial tones and TV static in their heads if you say “secure socket layer” to them. These folks have probably also sat through NordVPN ads and heard words like “secure” and “encrypted” used together, and will probably make understandable mistakes like “how’d someone steal bitcoins? I thought it was encrypted?”

Yeah, I’ve seen people riff on xkcd comics before but they usually do a bad job of matching the handwriting/font (I don’t know if Randall hand-letters these or if he types in a handwritey font). It’s often a deliberately bad job, because indicating that they are changing the original is a part of the message/artistic expression. Like when a word is covered with a black bar with white letters in it in a different font, an obvious revision, it’s like hearing a different voice interrupt.

Flight instructor here. It usually takes 5 or 6 flights for students to become comfortable working the startup and shutdown procedures. By the tenth time they climb in the plane I can normally say “okay start up and let’s taxi out” and that’s detailed enough instruction for them.

It takes about 6 to 8 hours of practice flying the plane, from straight and level flight, turns, climbs, descents, slow flight, stalls etc. before I even try letting them land, and then usually another 6 to 8 hours of practice before they can put the airplane down gently more often than not.

Landing a plane isn’t particularly easy.
