Yeah, why can't you all shut up about the genocide of Palestinians and just enjoy your bread and circuses... okay, well, the bread is too expensive for lots of people right too, so at least your circuses!

We're also going to throw this LGBTQ+ reference in here to make it seem like your choice is also a little homo- and transphobic.

Here also is an angelic photo of the contestant from genocidal Israel and an unquestioned statement about people being pissed that genocidal Israel - which isn't even fucking IN Europe! - is in Eurovision, given said genocide, is antisemitic (it's not! Israel is committing genocide and that is shitty, no matter what religion they are)

Canada abstained from this vote. Abstention is ridiculous but for Canada it's ridiculously progress. https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/un-palestinian-request-canada-vote-1.7200464

Something you could be doing to support student protesters’ encampments and demands at your alma mater is write a letter to your university’s president voicing your support for the demands and shame that your university is invested in funding genocide.

Next I plan to look into what my bank (credit union) is investing in and to figure out how to contact the public service superannuation fund to request they divest from anything on the BDS list (see link) and any weapons manufacturers. https://bdsmovement.net/get-involved/what-to-boycott

My toxic trait is that in other currencies I always refer to the single note coins as loons and the double note coins as toons. Euro loon, euro toon. Pound loon, pound toon. 🤷‍♀️

Can definitely tell that Israel’s actions are not at all dodgy and genocidal, no, never, by their banning of a critical free press outlet that actually presents an opposite view to the west’s Netanyahu lapdogging. Yup. Very democratic and free and not at all autocratic. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/5/5/netanyahu-government-votes-to-close-al-jazeera-channel-in-israel

The machine of equating criticism of the genocidal state of Israel with antisemitism is working overtime today. 4+ stories in the CBC telling us we’re not allowed to challenge the deaths of tens of thousands at the hands of a vicious government.

casseagull,
@casseagull@mstdn.social avatar

@Auxonic one of the headlines was something about a woman being worried she’ll have to move again. Lady, you’re living in a colonialist kibbutz on the border with Gaza set up by Israel to take over Palestinian land. I mean, you don’t have to move (though you shouldn’t be there in the first place), but you do have to not be an asshole.

Some friends’ son is cat and house sitting for us while we’re gone and while I am sure he’s doing a great job MAN is it hard to get proactive information from a 20 year old guy. We ask about the cats and he offers zero additional information besides that they’re good or whatever. It’s honestly hilarious how on brand it is for guys of his age.

@stephanie I hope this is a joke about the the article about the person on the scooter who rang their bell at some geese, fell, and then commented to the person interviewing them that the geese didn’t listen to their bell 😂

@stephanie it’s this story - here’s the money quote: "I came upon this flock of Canada geese," said Gravel. "They all separated and I was ringing my bell. This one rogue Canada goose — I don't know if she didn't hear the bell — ran in front of me." https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/escooter-goose-cash-safety-ottawa-helmet-1.6964539

The last time I was in England for any length of time was almost 20 years ago (how am I even old enough for that to be the case???). I remember that I made tacos for the family I was staying with (I was obsessed even then) and finding the ingredients for it was quite hard - I had to make a lot of replacements. Now there are Mexican and Thai and even bubble tea places in tiny little seaside towns in the north east. It’s quite a change.

casseagull,
@casseagull@mstdn.social avatar

I’m also a bit floored about how great the gluten free options are. Everywhere seems to either have a GF menu or else has a binder that has an ingredient matrix in it so they can tell you what is safe for you. I’ve also been to fish and chip places in small seaside towns that just randomly have gluten free fish and chips (and vegan fish!) done in their own dedicated fryer. It’s amazing.

casseagull,
@casseagull@mstdn.social avatar

Marks and Spencer also has gluten free boxed sandwiches, which is so awesome. It is so so so so so SO hard to find a quick grab and go takeaway food when you can’t eat gluten (other than sushi and I’ve eaten some abhorrent grocery store and airport sushi) so a boxed sandwich is a frigging dream.

casseagull,
@casseagull@mstdn.social avatar

I found Sainsbury’s GF sandwich today, in a train station of all places (a GF grab and go in a transport hub is an extreme level of difficulty normally!) and one of them is egg and cress. Yum.

casseagull,
@casseagull@mstdn.social avatar

We were running late because we had a hard time getting a cab and I almost cried that they just had a sandwich for me. In the Ottawa airport my only real option was such that was more than $20 and was a contender for the worst sushi I have ever had.

casseagull,
@casseagull@mstdn.social avatar

I’ve been scoping out all the grocery stores to see who has sandwiches and what kinds. Most grocery stores do, as do Boots. Tesco Locals seem to be limited to egg and tomato but most or the others have at least two choices. Prêt à Manger needs to get with the times because they somehow have no options!!! For the grocery stores, it’s best to go earlier in the day ensure you can find a sandwich. I’ve been grabbing them for my light lunch bites.

    @grivettcarnac I feel like people use the concept of “privilege” these days just to note that change is hard and to justify making no effort to change - and it is black and white thinking. Even moving a couple of your shops is still participating in the boycott - it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Sounds just like the argument against bike lanes acting as though that means 1000% of your errands and such need to be done by bikes.

    Correction: half a century of auto- and commuter-based city planning resulted in downtown cores like Ottawa being single-industry focused non-bourhoods where the sidewalks are rolled up on weekends and evenings (most businesses even ignoring even the possible patronage of neighbouring communities) had a devastating impact that was exacerbated by the pandemic.

    casseagull,
    @casseagull@mstdn.social avatar

    @johnefrancis I think when things are booming the business owners think it’s because they themselves are amazing and as long as they keep working hard things will continue to be amazing but when things are rough, it’s not their fault, it’s an outside party’s fault like the government or bike lanes because they are smart world saving small business owners.

    Wednesday: TB announces new RTO policy increasing on site presence.
    Thursday: Info comes out that the secretary of TB works remotely and regularly flies into Ottawa costing us tens of thousands of dollars.
    Friday: Secretary of TB resigns for "health reasons"

    @ShaunOttawa yeah that sounds like the senior executive hypocrits. I worked for a DM who used the job to travel to and from his home in another city for free (he claimed he needed to travel for work and would get an airline pass through work and primarily use it to go home) and work there all summer. I’m sure he’s now an eager supporter of the clerk’s three day mandate.
