New Pragmatic recording tomorrow ❤️

With all this rain lately, my sons cricket game has been cancelled this morning so I have my Saturday morning back… Now what do I do?

@chidgey Colonial Pipeline was quite interesting. We are starting to play in the OT/IT space so are acutely aware of ensuring systems are secured laterally. It is annoying that we don't know how long the employee had left, nor if there was any intrusion into the OT side.
Is there any best practice, particularly around AD, that we should look into? We are already pretty strict with FW rules and VPN access.

chidgey,
@chidgey@engineered.space avatar

@tl8roy It’s probably worthy of a more detailed post but in short, AD Admin lists need to be very short, vetted employees only (never outsource control) and ensure you have independent access channel(s) into the AD servers (out of band), would be my advice. The government frameworks don’t really spell it out that specifically (unfortunately).

Wow. I’m reminded that posting things in the Ars Technica forum that’s factually correct and realistic will be met with many downvotes and disrespect. Won’t be doing that again, lest I upset the children.

@waynedixon Geez you’re not wrong. I hadn’t heard it put like that before put that really says it. It’s frustrating when you want to learn, you want to educate, but apparently you’re in a growing minority. I remain hopeful that there will always be some that are curious and want to think, to understand.

@jasonetheridge Funny thing: I’d level that sentiment at any gender. Lots of people just need to grow up.

Do you know what hasn’t dropped by ~6%? Patrons and support via Streaming Value. It’s up and down but really hasn’t changed much at all. So yeah, downloads are really just an indicator, but they aren’t a very good one and not one to get hung up on I think. So glad stepped back from that game a few years ago. ❤️

For anyone that’s interested (probably not many) the latest Causality is on track to have lost ~6% of per-episode downloads, in part likely due to the change in download behaviour of the Apple Podcasts app. This is far less than some places are reporting most likely due to the broader, non-Apple-specific appeal of the show. https://op3.dev/show/fcf68aef-a773-5163-9379-306667d58fc3

I am trying multi-focal contact lenses today!

How do they even work? I think each lense is -3.5 in the middle, and then a ring around which is only -1.75? And somehow the eye & brain make sense of it all. Magic!

I don't hate them. I also don't love them?

It's a new type of of not-quite-perfect but way-better-than-nothing.

I think the best thing about them is I feel relaxed wearing them. Which is a pretty big deal after eye-strain induced migraines...

chidgey,
@chidgey@engineered.space avatar

@HerraBRE I’m glad they’re working for you 😌 I’ve tried several over the years and they all gave me headaches. Single focal point contacts for distance with reading glasses were my ultimate compromise as I’ve got older.

For those interested, I will be covering the SeaWorld Helicopter incident only once the final formal report has been released. They’re currently saying that should be by the end of this year, so expect an episode on that late this year or early 2025.

Pulled together an episode of my Video show (don’t call it a podcast) Pragmatic Electric, before the clock chimes midnight on the last day of the year. Because, why not? Also, I’m back at work in just over a days time so there’s that. Enjoy ☺️ https://engineered.space/notice/AdMRHbhUoxrlQmGhii

What’s most disturbing about social media is the equal-weighting of personal air-time people give it relative to reputable news and other forms of discourse. The ease of making comments, sometimes horrible, unthought, random comments, or even positive, thoughtful comments, can explode and take off and you’re dragged into a personal assassination by those that disagree. It seems it’s often better to simply say nothing at all.

chidgey, to random
@chidgey@engineered.space avatar

For the record I’ve had several dozen messages via Boostagrams, though the most via an App were sent via Fountain (10 for Causality via Fountain). They are comments but not always huge amounts and hence don’t appear on the Boostagram Leaderboards on TEN. I’m considering some kind of scrape to grab smaller amount comments and link them. Maybe.

@chidgey@engineered.space avatar

As part of my Christmas clean-up I’ve fixed three incorrect Social Interact comment links in Causality, added all of Sleep, added the most recent 8 Analytical too, then re-run Threadcap to dump them to static files and added them to the site. In the 9 months since I last did it, no one has added any comments via the Fediverse episode posts. 0. None.

@ivory Wondering if there’s any update on compatibility with other ActivityPub servers like Pleroma or Misskey? They both follow the Mastodon API (for the most part). Thank you.

@ivory Thank you for the detailed response. I suspected that the post identifiers might be the cause. I look forward to future updates. Have a safe and happy Christmas ☺️

Right. A comment by @KayEss pushed me to do this.

My Medium account is now closed. Almost all the posts I made there are now on my personal blog. And I've not broken anything - because I used a custom subdomain for Medium, I've managed to make sure all the old links still work.

Hurray for my own domains. Hurray for self-hosting. Goodbye, Medium.

https://james.cridland.net/blog/2023/removing-medium-but-keeping-the-urls-working/ has some scant detail about how I did it.

chidgey,
@chidgey@engineered.space avatar

@james @KayEss Medium was always a risk. I avoided it entirely and just stuck with my own blog. Something to be said for owning your own domain and own blog.

So perhaps, “It’s quick and usually cheap to find Fiction, but for Facts you have to take time and usually spend money”. But then, I’m an engineer and so that’s a more accurate title, but not click-baity enough I suppose.

chidgey, to random
@chidgey@engineered.space avatar

Digging into the suggestion that “the truth is paywalled but lies are free” and whilst it sounds valid since it’s cheap to spin Bullshit quickly and get views/ad impressions for money, and it’s expensive and time-consuming to do research and align with facts, neither is a guarantee. I suppose my issue is really “Truth” isn’t Fact, and a Lie is the opposite of a Truth, whereas Fiction is the opposite of Fact.

Just saw the last of x3 60th Anniversary Doctor Who specials. Honestly thought the best one was Wild Blue Yonder and The Giggle started well but resolved way too quickly over something trivial. Kind of a shame but still was great to see DT back and Donna if only for three episodes. I’ll take it. Interested to see how the Christmas special goes.

I started writing this episode many months ago and despite my multiple enquiries to get a more detailed report on specifically how the attack progressed, I came up empty. If I come across a formal report in future I’ll amend if necessary. https://engineered.space/notice/Ace0HOdO4IP7qRADJI

@drdrang Wow! Interesting. If I could characterise their attitude in a single word I’d describe them as Disorganised. Not the best trait if you’re running critical infrastructure.
