Slow Vacation

As an experiment, I did a vacation recently where I went somewhere warm with bodies of water and did basically nothing but read books by those bodies of water the whole time. I know many people had figured out this kind of vacation long ago, but it was my first time, and I can report that it ruled. Try it if you haven’t.

Women Who Code is closing down. They deserve kudos for everything they achieved in 10 years.

I don’t say like to talk about this much anymore, but it is wearing to work in an industry so lopsidedly male-dominated. It makes me really sad that one of the few organizations working to change that is going away.

I have some thoughts about the challenges of narrowing the gender gap even a little, based on my own experience with App Camp For Girls as well as everything I’ve been doing since that organization closed in 2019.

But I need more than a hot social media minute to write something meaningful about all this. Stay tuned for my lukewarm take, coming sometime. 😏

Our database has grown excessively over the past 3 weeks. We are investigating why, and also going forward with deploying an upgrade to our database, and changes that will shrink the size of our database going forward.

⚠️ UPDATE ⚠️

The app has been back online for about 12 hours, but our RSS parsers need to catch up to detect the new episodes we missed during the ~24 hour outage.

Also, our search feature is not working, as we have to wait for our search index operation to finish (eta 1-2hrs).

Sorry for the trouble everyone. The upside of this outage is we have made several improvements to our infrastructure while debugging. We'll post a more detailed update after all services are back online.

One of my fav antennas, and at 70m diameter, the largest steerable antenna in the Southern Hemisphere, located at @canberradsn

DSS43 keeps in touch with super important missions like Voyager2, only acquirable from this station!

@Lehmancreations I wrote a plugin for an IRC bot framework (Limnoria) that spawns an ffmpeg instance recording the stream on a 2 minute loop.

When someone asks for an ISO the bot parses their input and fuzzy matches it against an OpenAI Whisper-assisted transcript of the recording.

If it finds an approximate match it trims the mp3 and returns a URL to the IRC channel.

I (still) intend to open source it once I clean up a few things...

Been working on cloud sync code for weeks. Multiple times I thought I was done and ready to move on only to discover a race condition at like 4:30pm on Friday.

That has happened 3 weeks in row - including yesterday.

I had an idea to fix the latest one and didn't want it hanging over my head all weekend AGAIN so I worked until 10pm.

I think I figured it out and fixed it, but now I'm scared to test in depth because I might come up with another scenario to try that triggers a whole new problem.

The performance regression I’ve been tracking down for the past couple of hours was caused by a logging breakpoint in a Task with “automatically continue” turned on. And I had forgotten to it turn off.

Experience lets you avoid bad ideas, but it doesn't prevent you from screwing up while you're working on the good ones. 😀

    @ratkins @jsq nope. It’s a remarkable duopoly of similar rules, fees and practices to the Apple App Store. Complete coincidence and a free market at work for sure 🙃

    My point though is that Apple pundits don’t get that they can look over the fence to see what happens when you allow alternative app stores. The answer is very boring: The platform owner always finds a way to win. Nothing else flourishes.

    What’s most disturbing about social media is the equal-weighting of personal air-time people give it relative to reputable news and other forms of discourse. The ease of making comments, sometimes horrible, unthought, random comments, or even positive, thoughtful comments, can explode and take off and you’re dragged into a personal assassination by those that disagree. It seems it’s often better to simply say nothing at all.

    Updated my look at the effect of iOS 17 on Apple Podcasts download share numbers - now with an additional ten days of data!

    • iOS 17+ seems to have plateaued at over 70% of AP listeners
    • for AP-heavy shows, seeing AP share drops from high 60s to low 60s
