For my personal use, I was on for many years, then on for quite a while, and now I’ve started migrating back to Keychain. Keychain has been getting better in ways I care about, and 1Password has been stagnating or getting worse.

chucker,
@chucker@norden.social avatar

But. For business use, I’m stumped. Apple won’t have an adequate solution here. I don’t like where the 1P client app is headed, but it still seems like the best choice.

Required: sharing credentials across specific other people in a team.

Nice to have: mandatory rules on minimum entropy, etc., and/or a centralized overview of which credentials are insecure.

chucker,
@chucker@norden.social avatar

1P is pricey, but what else even fulfills this need?

This is snarky commentary on how happy people are to install smartphone keyboards that upload data, or use services that make grammar/style suggestions server-side. Have they really thought that through?

Here's an alternative idea, @1password:

Listen to your 🤬 customers. We've been trying to tell you.

https://blog.1password.com/privacy-preserving-app-telemetry/

(One day I'll embrace that I am no longer the customer 1Password cares about, but I'm currently in the DENIAL stage of grief.)

chucker,
@chucker@norden.social avatar

@sethadam1 @caseyliss collecting telemetry can be good. Anonymizing is good.

But… making it opt-out is bad.

chucker,
@chucker@norden.social avatar

@oversteer @caseyliss FWIW, iCloud Keychain does, on Windows, work with Edge and Chrome. Nothing else so far, though.

If you are creating your own server on here, don't use a domain name with the word "mastodon".

The word "mastodon" in relation to social networks is a registered trademark owned by Eugen Rochko's Mastodon gGmbH organisation.

If you use a domain name which includes the word "mastodon", you can be sued by Eugen's organisation if you don't comply with their wishes:

https://joinmastodon.org/trademark

For example, this would potentially make it illegal to switch to software unapproved by Mastodon gGmbH.

chucker,
@chucker@norden.social avatar

@homegrown @Cleopatra @michal it’s no different than what Mozilla does. Make significant changes to Firefox, and you can’t call it Firefox any more. Is that less free? Yes. But it also means a stranger can’t ruin the reputation.

Not only must we wade through posts complaining about bird site, now, we must contend with posts about cerulean atmosphere.

Why is Blue Sky actively competing with ActivityPub and not contributing to the community standards process? I’m sure they have their reasons.

While they are a separate company, they were spun out of Twitter, so is there still any relationship at all there?

    I am surprised @gruber thinks the most likely adoption of LLMs at Apple this WWDC season would be Copilot-style Xcode code completion. That seems like one of the areas that has legal and ethical hurdles enough to scare Apple away from ever adopting it, and feels like there's no way Apple tries training it against internal source code lest it regurgitate secrets into third-party apps. Can it still be useful with a very narrow training set? /via https://mastodon.social/@daringfireball/110243713326894406

    My prediction that deno is the new iojs is becoming more true with every node release: https://social.lunchlurkers.com/@filmaj/110225701102032889 ✌️

    I don’t mind that innovation in node needs hard forks or greenfield projects, but the folks in charge should look at making that an official and sustainable process rather than relying folks burning themselves out or burning VC cash. 🙏

    chucker,
    @chucker@norden.social avatar

    @claudius @janl yeah, but one inevitably leads to the other.

    VCs losing money, I don’t care. VCs quickly hiring (luring away) 17 employees (to do what, exactly?) then probably dropping them like a hot potato because there’s no exit strategy, I do mind. That’s humans who deserve 1) sustainable software development, not “crunch”, and 2) a steady job.

    I imagine that’s Jan’s point.

    Apple TV is so poorly written and played that it hurts. Stiff, full of stereotypes, educational (in a bad way), with characters performing ideas not persons. Will probably make it harder for good takes on to get funding and be produced.

    chucker,
    @chucker@norden.social avatar

    @christianschwaegerl @bkeegan a story about a catastrophe that looks large but takes decades to unfold is simply harder to write than something that unrealistically zips by.

    Y'all told me Andreesen was smart, Thiel was smart, Rabois was smart, Musk was smart, they have all outed themselves as lucky and dumb. You need to stop assuming being rich and being smart are the same.

    chucker,
    @chucker@norden.social avatar

    @seldo with Andreessen, I think it was 1) he wrote Netscape! (which, well, no, he was one of the developers), and 2) he headed Netscape, and they were the underdog! (which, again, only part of the story).

    Has he done any good for society since the late 1990s? Probably not.

    (I do give Musk credit on playing a role in kicking the industry’s butt and showing an electric car can absolutely be done.)
