A Catholic organization’s AI chatbot “hallucinated” that it was a real priest and took a user’s confession.

It also said it was OK to baptize baby in Gatorade.

I don’t know how hard this would be to implement, but it would be cool if there was a way to suggest for images lacking it so that it was easy for the OP to add it. Like a dialog box that says something like “(at)soandso has suggested the following alt text for this image… Use suggestion / Don’t use”

ChasMusic,
@ChasMusic@ohai.social avatar

@cohomologyisFUN The OP still has to determine whether the suggested text describes the image well and correct it if it's not up to par. Microsoft Word has this feature and when I tried it I was not impressed by the results. That said, technology can be improved and we may yet get suggested alt text which only needs minimal tuning.

cohomologyisFUN,
@cohomologyisFUN@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@ChasMusic Sorry, I wasn't clear. I didn't mean AI. I meant other users.

User 1: Posts image without alt text
User 2: Writes a suggested alt text for the image
User 1: Reads User 2's suggested alt text, approves by clicking one button

You can do this manually using comments, of course, but I was thinking of a faster system

There’s this guy I was friends with in grad school who was kinda weird—but so were most of us, myself included. In the intervening roughly decade-and-a-half, we fell out of touch. But recently I’ve seen him post some bizarre unhinged stuff online and it’s like, did he believe this stuff back then (but it wasn’t socially acceptable to say) or did brainworms get to him?

Exchange during SBF's trial, reported by @molly0xfff :

> AUSA Sassoon: Would that include not embezzling customer assets, for example?
>
> Defense attorney Mark Cohen: Objection.
>
> Judge Kaplan: Sustained.
>
> Bankman-Fried: Yes, it would include that.
>
> Cohen: You didn't have to answer if it has been sustained. Haven’t you been sitting here for four weeks?
>
> Bankman-Fried: I felt the need to answer that one.

This guy has no sense!

@cohomologyisFUN @molly0xfff predictably he believes he's smarter than everyone else in the room. That almost always goes badly in the courtroom.

I dislike the NYTimes, but I think Ezra Klein's latest podcast episode, about the recent events in Israel and Gaza, is worth a listen. The title is:

"Israel is giving Hamas what it wants"

Just another indication that this guy is an asshole with too much money.

He says he doesn’t understand why Wikipedia needs donations, since the text can fit on a smartphone. Apparently he forgot that Wikipedia has pictures (and other non-text media). And they have servers, since most people don’t want to dedicate 20+ gigs of storage to having a personal copy of an encyclopedia on their phone.

Also, I’m guessing the Wikimedia Foundation actually pays their rent.

cohomologyisFUN,
@cohomologyisFUN@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

(Also, the “fits on a smartphone” argument only applies to the current text of the English-language Wikipedia, and ignores all the other great Wikimedia Foundation projects, such as every other language’s Wikipedia, as well as Wiktionary, WikiVoyage, etc.)

The Republicans do not have control of the US House in any practical sense. Yes, a majority of the House’s members belong to that party, but the Republicans do not have a majority of votes willing to back their nominee for speaker.

cohomologyisFUN,
@cohomologyisFUN@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

This is why it’s ridiculous for McCarthy and his allies to blame Democrats for not supporting McCarthy on the motion to vacate. Minority parties have no obligation to offer confidence to a floundering majority, especially without getting something in return. If Republicans want Dems’ help to install a new speaker, they need to negotiate.

Republicans don’t want to govern. They want to throw performative fits against the scapegoat of the day. And they want to burn down the economy to make people angry.

Conversation I just saw on here from a few days ago (heavily paraphrased):

A: Apple won’t comply with new EU regulations because Europe is tiny.

B: The EU has 100 million more people than the US.

A: Really, there’s 0 chance that is true. You must have your head up your behind.

What I find most fascinating about this kind of discourse is that you can see who is right about the populations (B) in less than a minute.

Instance owners/operators have every right to refuse service on any basis that doesn’t violate anti-discrimination laws. But if you’re going to kick someone off who hasn’t used their account abusively, but because you discover something about them that makes you uncomfortable, then perhaps consider asking them to migrate (so they can take their followers) before banning them.

We are apparently having a debate about whether it’s okay to “both sides” slavery in our schools. 😡🤬

The answer is NO. Just NO.

Perhaps some enslaved people learned skills that they later used to make a living after being freed. That’s grasping at straws to try to find a something good that came out of centuries of human misery inflicted for pure greed. It’s ridiculous.

cohomologyisFUN,
@cohomologyisFUN@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@tofugolem exactly.

White people (myself included*) need to think long and hard about how we benefit from racial inequities and why we accept that as okay.

  • I’m a mixed race person (white mother and SE Asian father), but in most situations I’m regarded as white.
tofugolem,
@tofugolem@mastodon.social avatar

@cohomologyisFUN
Also half-white/half-Asian, which in America is practically the same thing as white. And white people who make or accept these arguments never seem to consider that the same arguments work in more than one direction. They/we just assume shit will always flow in the same direction.
