crossfadedragon,

Don’t write it off just because some users are obnoxious about it. I use Linux myself, but I just sidestep any bs I come across and go about my business. If you’re curious about Linux, try it out. If you’re not, no sweat.

If you ever do try it out, I highly recommend the Linux mint forums, even if you choose a different distro. They seem friendly enough there.

I’d also recommend installing time shift for system restore type functionality and an external USB drive for backups of personal files just in case.

I Tried Reddit Again and it Sucks Now

I installed the official Reddit app and went on it to see what the old place was looking like now. My inbox was filled with spam. The “home feed” shows subs I never subscribed to. There are so many ads. Between the ads and the the extra subs in the feed, it’s hard to just scroll. I also noted a lot of spam in some of the...

crossfadedragon,

i didn’t like xbox controllers myself originally, especially when xbox first debuted. the size of them and position of the sticks felt cumbersome.

the xbox one controller i use now isn’t so bad. ps2 was my favorite controller of all time though.

crossfadedragon,

ps2 for me, it was my first foray outside of nintendo for gaming. dark cloud is probably one of my favorite games of all time.

same system introduced me to the gta series as well.

i remember playing it in the summer with my dog at my side.

wished i never sold it.

crossfadedragon,

theres older people that are like that too though. they just want to be able to use a pc, etc. and not have to think about it too much.

crossfadedragon,

i used to hate how long installing win xp took, updating, then getting my favorite 3rd party software installed, and so on.

don’t get me wrong i liked xp, but reinstalling windows, any of them, always felt like a huge chore.

linux is much better in that regard. especially when you dig in and start automating stuff with scripting.

crossfadedragon,

fair enough. I’ve seen a number of people having issues with wifi on linux across the web.

i prefer wired connection for my pc regardless of support and only use wifi for tv, phone, etc.

best practice is a spare ethernet cable and if a built in wifi adapter won’t work, research external usb ones if you need wifi that bad.

personally I’d rather find a work around or try a different distro than give up and go back to windows over a wifi adapter.

crossfadedragon,

cortana drove me nuts . i like being able to search/type in the start menu, that was a good freature to add, but cortana along with web searching felt messy and invasive.

I’ve heard of people allegedly losing personal files in updates but i never experienced that problem.

at one time i had a laundry list of reasons i disliked windows but over the years I’ve refined down to “not my cup of tea”.

crossfadedragon, (edited )

did you try renaming the vivaldi folder in .config? maybe your profile is corrupted somehow?

edit: you say you can’t get the folder to go away, you mean the profile folder? double check the permissions on the folder and subfolders/files.

edit 2: im on kubuntu, just checked for updates and restarted vivaldi and see no problem.

try running it again and then type in a terminal window:

dmesg --level=err,warn

and see what pops up.

you might need to use sudo at start of command or type:

sudo !!

and hit enter.

edit 3:

try uninstalling vivaldi again and type in terminal:

sudo rm -r /opt/vivaldi/

try uninstalling with command:

sudo purge vivaldi-stable -y

crossfadedragon,

yeah package name should be

vivaldi-stable

i still think something might be corrupted with your vivaldi folder inside .config/

if you purge i dont remember if youll lose the profile data/folder.

make a backup of the vivaldi folder inside .config if it isnt too late, or just rename it.

you might also try booting into the recovery console at boot and try checking the filesystem for errors for disk containing home.

have you noticed anything else weird lately like corrupted downloads or files in general? ram and or ram slot going bad could be to blame. i had that happen once.

in any case i highly recommend timeshift if you have spare storage space. it has saved me a couple times when packages got boogered up.

crossfadedragon,

oh neon, that could change things. im still on kubuntu 22.04 lts

im out of ideas, but i hope you can get it fixed.

good luck

crossfadedragon,

i played it at the public library because they had a t1 connection so it was easier to get stuff from the money tree.

crossfadedragon,

not sure if it was shear number of players in the tree or if other players were using scripts but yeah i could never get anything at home.

i remember buying up all the cheapest omlettes of a type i could then turn around and sell them in my shop for as much as i could.

crossfadedragon, (edited )

nearly drowning because i over estimated my swimming ability and stamina.

crossfadedragon,

in my situation i was trying to cross a lake. tried to stay calm and just tread water, but i was too exhausted and kept going under. luckily a lady in a small boat threw a couple fun noodles to me and that was enough to help me back to shore.

its hazy now but i think i tried floating on my back and doing butterfly strokes at some point but i think i just panicked when i started feeling tired.

crossfadedragon,

our computer lab at school was half ibm pcs and the rest were apples. i dont remember which apple but i think probably the same as you played.

played a lot of isle of dr quandry, word muncher, treasure math storm, gizmos and gadgets. i think oregon trail too, but the dos/windows one.

when it would rain during recess the teachers would let us play otherwise we only went to the lab one day a week.

there was animation/art program all of us used to mess around with. cant remember what it was called.

crossfadedragon, (edited )

deleted. double post.

ok apparently not double post.

i had gta3 up to san andreas on ps2 and pc. played a multiplayer mod for san an, glitchy but fun.

elder scrolls is fun. need to get back to daggerfall unity and finish it.

you dont have to feel left out. grab something like retroarch and dive in.

crossfadedragon,

i watched a friend play alttp at his house but i forgot the name of it afterwards.

some time later my parents took me to best buy and got me the same game.

i recognized it once i got near the water temple in the light world. sounds dumb but that made really happy.

one of my favorite games.

oot was pretty cool too. i beat that and spent so much time just screwing around with a gameshark.

crossfadedragon,

mine too. now im on kubuntu, still use timeshift. timeshift and czkafka [like fslint-gui] are two of my go to tools.

crossfadedragon,

power a brand xb one wired controller. works under linux and retro arch, and rumble works too.

edit: it’s funny to me considering when the first Xbox debuted, i absolutely hated the og controller and the position of the sticks.

crossfadedragon,

it’s a 3 way tie between link’s awakening [original], a link to the past, and ocarina of time for me. loved the mechanics, music, and just exploring.

crossfadedragon,

i remember using that, then i used trillian.

my groups main way to plan lan parties.

crossfadedragon,

infinite worlds of maybe by lester del rey. protagonist goes on a journey through alternate worlds in search of his father.

trick is the other worlds stability depends on their probability of occurring in reality. the less likely to occur, the greater chance it will disappear.

i think it was published in the 50s and possibly out of print.
