I never knew or really followed Heather Armstrong's blog, but she obviously impacted a ton of people in a very positive way. I observed her death by watching her talk from @waxy's XOXO conference. I don't often remind people that I am hugely invested in Apple. I've owned shares since 1996. Yes, the company I criticize the most is the company whose failure would affect me most devastatingly. I criticize them because I want them to be the best they can be. It might ring hollow, but I want them to "be Apple" more than I want to profit from them "being Apple."

I got the message from a lot of good Texans that of course that is what they would like to do. I didn't intend to criticize voters, but to separate voters from current leaders' actions. There is hope for future elections.

@gruber On Cotton obit delay: I don’t have the insider scoop but unless a paper has the obit in the file and can just update it, they may hold it until they can gather enough real color and verify facts, then slate it to run. Nonetheless, rare to delay quite this long for a figure important enough to memorialize. Very fair piece of writing.

One of the worst Siri failures is when I say “30 seconds” and it replies with “there are no timers set.” It really feels sometimes like nobody who works on Siri actually uses it.

Following suggestions by @danielpunkass i bought a Rubik’s cube, followed some online tutorials, and solved it for the first time. I can see how you internalize the way of solving this, doing it over and over. The early steps have already gotten easy, and it won’t be long before I can do it without much difficulty.

This also made me think that, at my age, I should learn something new every year. I wish I had time to learn another language, but I will find other things to learn.

I'm a semi-fluent Spanish speaker but I have a lot of gaps in my knowledge. I recently decided I'd go through Pimsleur's Spanish course. It's a little tedious but I'm already learning little things I never knew. I think it's a good program.

I have been privileged to know many fine NYT employees who worked on the crossword product, or adjacent to it. But I've never managed to know anybody at the NYT who might help me to lobby for sanctioned API access to the puzzle. Anybody have an in? Lately my users are getting tagged as "robots" when they try to log in.

I realize my app (Black Ink) operates at the whim of the NYT and they could feasibly shut down access at any time. But I hope somebody there will realize I'm only adding value to a service our mutual customers pay for.
