I go to fix one bug and pretty soon I'm revamping an entire interface. It's the story of my life. This is what happens when indie developers don't have product managers telling them what to do. The agony and the ecstasy.

Cleanest BART car ever.

jeffkibuule,
@jeffkibuule@sfba.social avatar

@danielpunkass I’ve started taking BART into work in the last month or two. They are all actually that clean. They just sent off the last of the old cars in April. Far more reliable than driving.

I honestly don’t want to drive my car anymore.

I agree that Governor Noem's killing of her dog was savage, and her defiance against our judgment is telling. But what if it had been a pig? We have a mixed up moral code about which animals are OK to slaughter, and when.

Gte,
@Gte@mastodon.social avatar

@danielpunkass If it had been as a pet I think you’d still have seen a backlash. Less of one for sure. But the reaction is to the killing of a creature she’d taken into her care. When it didn’t behave the way she wanted she killed it. It is the abdication of a responsibility she took upon herself to care for the life of another that is awful. Even among meat eaters and even farmers.

Given the widespread reports of Apple ID problems, corroborated by articles in reputable publications, often by victims of the very problem, it's absurd that Apple's status page reflects no problems. There should be systemic change to prevent this: https://www.apple.com/support/systemstatus/

chrisphin,
@chrisphin@mastodon.social avatar

@danielpunkass It’s also bad security practice. It affected me, so I checked the status page. If it had showed an error, I’d have been much happier knowing it was a legitimate bug, not a security compromise, and this is the behaviour I want big tech companies to train their users to expect. (But honestly the fact that they haven’t commented on it makes me think it WAS some kind of security issue, which may yet be ongoing. cc @glennf)

Over the last five years of 's bug-bounty we have received 489 submissions. For these 489 submissions the median first-response time has been, as calculated by Hackerone: 0 (zero) hours. If this does not ooze of awesomeness from a security team I don't know what does.

I presume they round or truncate to the nearest integer hour. Still means more than half of them got answered within an hour. Whenever or from wherever they were filed.

We take security seriously.

Any Mac developers ever get frustrated that you can't embed the WebKit Web Inspector in the same window as your WKWebView if you're using Auto Layout? I submitted a fix! https://github.com/WebKit/WebKit/pull/27105

danielpunkass,
@danielpunkass@mastodon.social avatar

@nighthawk Call this in your app to enable "Inspect Element" and the rest "just works" (like in Safari):

webView.configuration.preferences.setValue(true, forKey: "developerExtrasEnabled")

I mean it "just works" (for now) as long as the WKWebView isn't laid out with constraints :)

If you've been thinking about upgrading to paid on Lex's Games, today's a great day to do it, for the following reasons:

  1. I think upgrading was broken since I moved to https://lex.games, and that is sad.

  2. It's a great way to celebrate Easter.

  3. You get access to a daily, full-size crossword, visibility on leaderboards, custom preferences, access to beta games, the ability to create shareable games of your OWN, and access to endless random versions of Square Dance and Six Appeal!

I have neglected to promote Black Ink for iOS in part because I wanted it to be a "soft launch" and in part because I don't have time to do everything I want to do. If you are not aware, I shipped a crossword solving app for iOS, and it's pretty, pretty pretty good. https://redsweater.com/blog/4051/black-ink-for-ios-available-now

There appears to be an AppleScript regression in Safari 17.4. References to documents aren't resolved correctly, so that for example:

name of document 1

Works, but

set d to document 1
name of d

Does not. FB13679244.

jeffmjeffmjeffm,

There's something unsettling about the way Apple shares presumably private details like Spotify's use of TestFlight and installation figures. These are relatively minor disclosures, but they send a subtle chill nonetheless. https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2024/03/the-app-store-spotify-and-europes-thriving-digital-music-market/

krisbrowne42,
@krisbrowne42@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@danielpunkass I suspect those were already part of discovery in the EU already publicized. Spotify is not the good guy in this, any more than Amazon was when they used the DOJ to enshrine their dominance in ebooks.

1. My Regular Answer I wish more people knew that being trans in America is, in some ways, like being anything else in America. There’s not one way to “be” trans. And I think that diversity is a strength and a gift. So, when we encounter people who are incurious about trans people’s actual lives, we oughtn’t always dash into finessing those experiences into something everyone will find effortless to integrate into their existing priors. Do the work.
2. My Nuanced Answer The clarity about binaries upon which western civilization is based is a model. It’s a very useful model, and it wouldn’t have caught on if it weren’t grounded in patterns that were as consistently observable to any neolithic person as they are to someone living today. What about all the really good examples and numerous religions that imply an immutable binary? That just suggests that it’s an interesting model that people usually like and generally find useful. But, it doesn’t mean that the model is actually real. That’s what makes it a model.
3. My Real Answer In order to talk with another person about our life, we need to find terms, analogies, or anchoring points that we can both understand. What you often arrive at is an unsatisfying, provisional third language that neither of you speaks but you agree seems close enough for now. In this instance, I wish trans people could tell me about their life without having to dumb it down to something I can mostly understand. Rather than just getting to let their life just be its own thing. It’s our need to “understand” that makes so much stuff seem weird, or dangerous, or irrational. Because, ultimately, everything sounds dumb when you have to explain it to a fucking idiot.

The thing I and many smart folks have been working on for the last 9 months is out to all users today. Here it is: the NYT Games app’s new home screen. I’m especially proud of the accessibility work we put into it, including Dynamic Type and VoiceOver. And it’s all SwiftUI and has extensive snapshot test coverage, including for VoiceOver thanks to CashApp’s AccessibilitySnapshot library 😎
